buggy as all hell. The constant crashing and rebooting on it's own due to using external displays is really pissing me off. It crashes and reboots like 7x+ a day for me between all my dock setups with my studio displays. absolutely ridiculous and can't believe there's no hotfix out for this yet, as many people are complaining about it. It's unusable as a docked desktop, and apparently even the Studio desktops have the same problem, making their desktops even unusable!

and another great one related to studio displays, is about 90% of the time I dock, can't adjust brightness or true tone. It detects they're studio displays, but it doesn't let you adjust brightness at all until you unplug one of the displays from the TB port on the back of the monitor, and plug it back in. This happens every single time I dock for the most part now.
You know what really gets me?? Every Year, and I do mean EVERY Year, when we go thru this macOS (and OS X) beta cycle, it's as though Apple forgets they need to support all of these other devices. Apple updates a file containing a long list of supported devices (not sure if this is also a .plist file? Some kind of config file) within the OS and every year when the new OS comes out, the initial release (and sometimes many more!) seem to not include the list from the prior year. I understand why, but it's like they just wait for complaints to even check!

No issues on my 2019 16-inch, general release. Its connected to a LG 5k Ultrafine display through CalDigit TB3 dock, and its not given any hiccups. There was some stuttering with the Sonoma landscape lockscreen, but that eventually worked itself out. I've not had any apps crash, system crashes or anything that would cause alarm.

Nearly 75% of the users who installed Sonoma seem to be happy. That's a lot for a .0 release.
At this moment, I run Sonoma on an external T7 Samsung SSD and there are no problems thus far. (except on an Acasis Thunderbolt enclosure which is not compatible). I consider to install the 14.1 on my internal drive.

not terrible for all, just (apparently) terrible for you. and the problems you mention are not common, so... ask for help here, or call apple...

Mine had been beachballing like crazy after upgrading...the next day it seems that it had been working itself out. However, I had already planned to do a clean install which I just did...still a little beachballing and hope this will eventually work itself out.

Normally, the first release will be buggy until the next update. The eye candy...don't go there Apple...that's a Microsoft thing.

The main problem I have is that my MacBook Pro’s WiFi disconnects at some point during sleep. Microsoft on the other definitely needs to update office for Mac.

I'm having two unique experiences on the two machines I upgraded so far. My personal 16" seems to be fine for the most part, no noticible issues. My work 14" MBP is a different story and is beachball city. Finder freezes, most of my apps won't let me save new files. For example, in VS Code, Word, Text edit I can open an existing doc and hit save without issues but if I command N for a new doc it wont even prompt me to save when i hit command S or save as. I tried booting into safe mode, deleting finder prefs, ran disk utility, no luck. Time machine back up is taking forever but I'm debating if I should clean install or roll back to Ventura. Any tips?

Thanks!

Focus locked up on me this morning. Couldn't turn off Do Not Disturb then settings stopped responding and had to restart with the power button.

- Homekit or Home app bugged kept asking for Location permission... I click accept and the toggle reset again.
- Bluetooth crash 3 times within one hour
- iCloud sync messed up after update, caused redownload hundred of GBs

I would wait for 14.0.1 or something.

Due to the setting ui redesign... a lot of function there are glitchy.

Gaming is better, although I have to close the gaming software to be able to better it.
I mostly game on steam. And all those arcade games made for old timers, I usually game them once every 3 months.
Scrennsaver is now more stable. No crashes yet. I have not updates my ihone, not until apple gives us a Fold Model!!!!.

works very smooth for me, only problem I had was that a program started to crash on the M2 mini worked fine on MBP M2 so I guess it was not an update.
Reinstalled the program and worked smooth again.

I found some small bugs in Pages when copying frames from IMDB or deleting pasted text partially. Also some problems with Quicktime, but I can live with it.

Upgraded last weekend both the OS and the Studio Display firmware and everything has gone swimmingly. Made sure that I updated all the 3rd party software, device drivers, etc. No issues at all. The OS has been stable have not had to restart since it booted up Sonoma the first time, the Studio Display firmware not issues, I think it was to improve the camera, I don't see any difference, but I will take their word for it.

All-in-all no issues have cropped up. Still hate the system settings, don't use Stage Manager, though I kinda like the click on the desktop and the windows disappear and click again to bring them back. Have not noticed any speed improvements, but also have not noticed any performance issues either.

I think the secret to having a successful update is to making sure everything is up-to-date before doing the upgrade, a little pre-planning can save a lot of grief later on.

I'd suggest this question depnds entirely about users' assumptions & exactly what software is being used. For those who primarily use Apple software & recent computers, the use is likely is mostly OK (& assuming you want your mac increasingly turned into an iPhone).

For those who use professional, third party software for working committments (recording studio, film work etc) the answer as usual is 'hopeless'. Apple seem to have little regard for this & their OS updates break everything & requiring waiting for 3rd party application updates or often paid 'upgrades' (a racket, for sure). This especialy includes audio plug-ins, virtual instruments, NLE plugs, audio and video drivers etc and those applications which form an important web of interactivity for professional reliability. Apple has always been dreadful at this & clearly prioritise sharholders over customers.

It is no surprise that many pro users stay with older systems and many are totally scared of installing any of these new OS-es. Plus this one offers nothing really for pro users, just window dressinf & a bag of time-wasting.

If one *must* upgrade to a new OS, then the only way to do it is to run multiple boot disks: clone the working last OS with all of its apps onto a new drive then install the new OS over that. Curiosity & testing then can happen on a separate disk but when work need to happen, one can boot back into the working drive.

Folllowing up, I logged out of iCloud and all of my file saving problems and lag issues went away. My Time machine backup went from calculating ETA for 8 hours + to 30 minutes instantly. I haven't tried logging back in but at least the machine is usable again.

Hi all,

Obviously, the answer to this depends upon just what software you use, and I'll list the things that Sonoma broke for me, but first I'll list something that anyone may experience. (I'm currently running macOS 14.0 and have upgraded and recompiled all of my software.)

(1) I often switch between two or more user accounts, and there are several options for performing this switch: (a) one can open the Lock Screen, then switch usernames there, (b) one can click on the username in the menu bar and switch usernames there, or (c) one can open the Control Center, click on the users's icon, and select a different user (if setup in System Settings...). For me the (a) and (b) methods work fine, but (c) on the other hand caused a serious problem.

When I tried (c) and clicked on the users's icon and selected a different user, the new user's login screen appeared with the username already filled in but the password box was empty. Before I could enter the password (I use fairly long passwords but I'm also relatively fast at typing), the login screen went black for about a second then reappeared with both the username and password boxes empty. Before I could now type in both the username and password, the login screen again went black and reappeared after erasing whatever I had typed. This behavior continued repeating, not allowing me to login to either the new user nor the original user. I was essentially locked out of the Apple Silicon MBP. [I took iPhone videos of this behavior both times that I tried (c).]

I then SSH logged into the machine remotely and killed the WindowServer daemon, but this didn't fix the issue. Eventually I had to "shutdown" the MBP from the SSH login to recover. After the reboot, I tested this (c) issue and it was repeatable for me (the second time without any of my software running, just a freshly rebooted system and a new login -- no other software running).

So, in a nutshell, you might experience trouble when using the Control Center to switch users. (It is interesting to me that all three methods must not be running the same code, as (a) and (b) work properly but (c) fails badly.)

(2) I have had the occasional Bluetooth troubles. In particular, my Magic Trackpad will spontaneously disconnect while leaving my Magic Keyboard still connected -- thus Bluetooth is still working, just that the Trackpad disconnects (the Trackpad's battery level was 71% by the way).

Below are problems specific to my usage:

(3) There is a new minor problem with Ghostscript that causes Gimp not to use Ghostscript properly and crashes Gimp. I've rebuilt Ghostscript, and used three alternative versions of Gimp, but the problem persists.

(4) There is an "xfig" font problem that "fontconfig" doesn't correct. You might consider this an X11 problem with fonts under Sonoma.

(5) There is a new issue with Gnuplot running properly from within Sage, Maxima, or standalone.

(6) I've even had a new failure of one of my long bash scripts that I had to rewrite part of the bash script to eliminate this error.

(7) The "pdfcpu" utility works most of the time (extracting, merging pages from much larger PDFs), but I have found a PDF that causes a repeatable crash of pdfcpu running on the Apple Silicon MBP. However, executing pdfcpu from an Intel MBP on the same PDF works properly and doesn't crash, so this is an Apple Silicon pdfcpu problem that doesn't occur on Intel.

In summary, Sonoma has been quite buggy for my usage, more so than even Ventura was initially.

Regards,
Solouki

Running fine on my 2019 iMac which is booting off a Samsung x5 Thunderbolt drive. Also running fine on my MacBook M1 Air.
Installation for both was an upgrade over the top of Ventura. I do not use iCloud at all with these machines.

I'd say it hasn't been worse than any other .0 lately. Only issue I can't blame on some external party was that indexing seemed to fail halfway through, but manually rebuilding it worked fine.
One positive thing is that while new macOS version always used to break my printer driver (Samsung Xpress C480W), that has not been the case with either Ventura or Sonoma.
