Other Does the Pixel 3A compel Apple to release its own mid-range device?

From the reviews I’ve watched and read about the Pixel 3A and 3A XL, Google could have a very popular phone on its hands. It has decent specs, a solid display, an excellent camera, a guaranteed three years of OS updates, an earphone jack (!), and it’s being sold at a very competitive price.

Compared with the 64gb iPhone XR, the similar-sized 64gb Pixel 3A XL is being sold here in Canada at $649 CAD - that’s $380 CAD less than the XR ($1,029 CAD). If you compare the XR with the smaller 3A, we’re talking about a $480 CAD price difference. And this is before taxes.

Does anyone else think that these new Pixel devices could oblige Apple to release its own mid-range and lower-price device, like it did in 2016 with the iPhone SE? I can definitely see Apple’s market share being eroded if they fail to act.

If I was looking today to replace my SE, I know where I’d be spending my money – and it would not be going to Apple’s pockets.

I personally think Google got a winner with the 3a & 3aXL to most the Snapdragon 670 will be plenty powerful enough & with it having one of the best camera's in a smartphone aswell is a bonus, not to mention the price will eventually start come down on the 3a & XL making them even more compelling, I can see Black Friday having some great deals on these.

Apple needs to bring a budget iPhone to the Market £750 is not a budget price in the UK, & while we still do have the iPhone 7 that considered budget now that getting on for 3 years old this September.

Apple need a new phone with a starting price of £400 with at least 64GB of storage.

Apple could respond this September by dropping iPhone XR to $649, iPhone 8 to $449, and iPhone 8 Plus to $549.

Unlike Google, Apple doesn't seem to prefer lowering the quality of the enclosure material to meet a price.

To them it’s worth 60% of what it used to be.

So what was $749 is now $1099.

What should have been $499 is now $749.

at some point you're paying too much for the same thing though. Phones are like fridges nowadays. they all do the same thing. would you buy a $10,000 fridge?
back then iPhone had a serious lead hence why there was a price premium. today, there's an even bigger premium, and no lead.

I’m not giving my opinion. I’ve just stated Apple’s viewpoint.

I doubt that. The 2019 XR is likely only to receive a dual camera, nothing much more than that, because it will only raise the price. So if Apple had adds the 2019 XR in their lineup, the 2018 XR would only detract way from the 2019 XR, and naturally the consumer will choose the cheaper of the two phones (Aside they probably won’t even know the difference between the two models), and from Apples standpoint, that’s not a very tactical move given they want to maximize sales on the 2019 iPhone XR model.

They just need to get rid of their advertising business and quit their anti-competitive business practices and I might begin to trust them.

Exactly. The XR is already insanely affordable without the massive compromises of the 3A. You have to applaud Google for trying something different though in terms of slashing down all the specs and giving people a great camera at a compelling price point.

It’s just a shame for google that the camera is only one part of why people buy phones.

Honestly, that's BS. Midrange price is still in the $200-$500 range. anything over that is essentially flagship price.

Samsung and Apple are in the primo place where they can essentially exploit their customers to the tune of $1000 flagships.

You're wrong, though. Outside of Samsung and Apple, the flagship price is still pretty much set right in the middle of where iPhone XR is. It's part of the reason iPhone XR is selling so well; people still only think $750 is flagship price.

No I’m absolutely correct. You can’t just throw out the top 2 brands (at least in the US) when making that argument. iPhones and Samsungs are the main flagships and their prices are set at $1,000.

Okay, so we're in agreement. Apple and Samsung are in the ultra premium flagship space while the rest of the market (literally the rest of it - approximately 70% of the global market share) list their flagships at the $600-$800 range.

Glad we could agree. Pixel 3A is a midrange phone. Apple doesn't have a midrange phone
