Hi guys - this is true - my son happily did it to my phone! And now it is stuck in a boot loop. I've tried restoring it at least 10 times, with no luck. Gets to the apple logo with progress bar, except the bar does not move.

Apple Chat Helpline cannot help, apparently they have never heard of this issue.

Is it under warranty? AppleCare+ by chance? Visit AppleStore yet?

I was curious and did this silly thing because I thought it could be resolved through a restore.

But nope.

I bricked my iPhone 5s this way. Now I have an iPhone 6s, because the only way to fix it was through a $269 replacement, and I was like lolno thanks Apple.

And I needed a new phone.

Can I restore the iPhone 5s to 9.2.1? (I know it won't boot after the restore is finished, but I am just wondering if I could restore it to factory defaults).

with the battery there is a problem... the device shuts down before the battery is empty. and if you manage to get the battery empty totally, it may not start charging. (you should never let current batteries to be empty totally)

If that's true then the only solution is to open the phone up and unplug. Because the only real fix is to reset the PRAM and the only way of doing that on an iPhone is absolute zero power from the battery to the board (unplugging it or 100% dead) if 100% dead is harmful the actual battery then that leaves unplugging the connector inside the phone.

Do it yourself and void warranty. Best option would be to take it to a store and have them do it, which would retain the warranty.

That's crazy they told you that it would be $269 to replace it when all they have to do is open it and unplug the battery from the board for a few seconds.

I wonder what would happen if I told them to unplug the battery for a few seconds at the Apple Store.

"Take the screen off, unplug the battery, plug it back in."

> "Why?"

"shh baby is ok just do it"

You tell them "because it fixes the issue and I don't need a full replacement phone."

There are many blogs on the internet about it and hot to fix it. Point them to those (one of the first blogs about it I believe was posted earlier in this thread.)

If you discover this bug, that's one thing. But making a video about it is irresponsible. The steps to reproduce it are so random that there's no need to warn people about it, and it couldn't happen by accident. Unless you actually want people to try it...

It was found by accident. And it's better if this kind of thing is reported and fixed because it's pretty serious.

It was discovered by accident, but how many people are going to discover by accident? Just privately report the bug to Apple and it'll be fixed.

It actually affects more people this way than if you just file a bug report.

If people are stupid enough to do this, then they deserve what they get.

It is under warranty, in a different country - no Apple stores here where I am. I just opened it up, disconnected the battery, reconnected it, and works 100% again, back to normal.

What got my son was the authentic looking webpage from Apple, showing the icons etc. And no, it wasn't 4chan, it was 9gag... I've had a look on there too, and there are a lot of people playing along, saying how great it is, and that people should definitely do it.

You can't change the date on a display model iPhone, can you?
The display model iPhones I am talking about are not sold by Apple but by retailers. They have everything unlocked and available to tweak.I am not stupid to try it out in the official store lol

I read people were doing this to demo-phones in Apple stores, and "bricking" all of them. Pretty troll of them.
I expect some of the professional Apple haters on this site to do that. Edit: never mind, just read where some idiot is bragging about doing it. Hope he gets caught.
People are all kinds of stupid.

Makes me question Apples engineering software.

Unfortunately this will push back our next iOS update. It's unlikely they will want to release it without this being patch.

So does this mean they'll be an update/fix in the next few days? I wouldn't even consider even doing this to my phone even out of curiosity but I'm sure people will get tricked into doing this phone breaker.

Cmon dude lighten up.Those phones are not permanently bricked.Just gotta wait till the battery drains and they will be fine.I did it because I was curious exactly how it looked
Anyway there's probably a ton of iPhones being bricked comically as we speak as people trick each other out of humour so blame Apple engineers for not being competent enough to not see this in QA testing

The fix is simple patch the widget so the earliest date is Jan 2.

Lets hope they don't slap a bandaid on it like that. That's moving Apple further from the mark IMO.

Although that behavior does open opportunities for the JB community for exploit the vulnerabilities they need for an untethered JB.
