Luckily I'm safe from this bug on my 5c.
Not everything is perfect. Apple can't think of everything. I think they have a few other things on their plate besides trying every possible combination of things to try to find bugs.

What I don't understand is why does the software even allow you to set a date that far back? Unless you're Doc Brown, there doesn't seem to be a practical use for this.

In that case shouldn't it be "are" not "is"? I don't fully understand the sentence though.

@Jayson A

Edit: It's the lack of commas (and some missing words) that were a bit confusing, fixed: As Microsoft can attest to, making an operating system without bugs, even "simple" ones, is impossible.

That makes much more sense with commas. I see where the IS is coming from now. Operating System was singular, then there was the little side note about simple ONES (bugs, plural), then back to singular again because (making the OS) "is" impossible.

Thank you for making it easier to understand with the commas.

Ok, I didn't think the Lightning cable screen would pop up. Whatever you do, do not charge it. Only only fix to the Jan 1, 1970 bug is to reset the PRAM. And the only way to do that is no power whatsoever from the battery. (Physically opening the phone and unplugging the battery, or letting it drain off completely.)

The Lightning cable screen usually only comes on when the battery is super low (like 1%) so hopefully it won't be much longer till yours is drained.

I ended up reseting the PRAM by physically opening the phone and replugging the battery. It's back to normal now :)

As far as I know, only 64-bit iPhones are affected. I'm pretty sure the 5c has a 32-bit processor.

Tbh the fact that this bug even exists is a testament to how bad the QA is getting at apple. Not only did this get missed by the developers but also QA aswell! Someone has to be fired for this surely.

Did the battery drain trick not work?

Things have been this way ever since Steve and Forstall left the company

My son came to me this morning with a bricked phone, laughing I asked him what happened and I already knew the answer. He changed the date like a moron.
I told him apple was booked a week out to teach him a lesson. He's 16 by the way, a good kid that gets high honor role so it just a kid thing

I think someone has already bricked 2 of the phones in the Store near my block lol.I could see 1-2 employees clustered around the phone :D Not sure if it was a result of this bug or something else though

Please don't try as it will brick your iPhone
Can anyone explain what causes this issue?
And how to fix it...?

I walked into the Apple Store this morning, they said hardware failure and gave me a new phone.

Either wait for your battery to completely die or go to the Apple Store. All they gotta do is disconnect your battery and reconnect it. You might lose your data from what I've read online.

It didn't work or maybe I didn't wait long enough.

It would take a long time to drain all the way even from "0%". Doing so could damage the battery.
Seems like iOS 9.3 should fix the issue.
