Hi guys, BetterDisplay will show 10bpc if `samplesPerPixel` is 10 - for all other occurrences (even though the reported value is sometimes 16) the app will show 8bpc as I believe the latter result (16) is not real and I did not want to confuse anybody by showing 16bpc - but I did not investigate this further. The 8 vs 10 is solely about the framebuffer - the connection might as be as well 10bits especially as the dongle can do whatever it wants, the app won't take that into account. If the framebuffer depth is 8bpc then the TV showing 10bits is irrelevant, will not make the image any better. :)

(+ note: I think it is really difficult to discern the difference between 8 and 10 bits in any real life setting + I never saw anything else other than 8bit on my mini-LED 4K display@120Hz with direct displayPort or USB-C connection either - 10 bits shows up on my QHD test displays usually - so I'd be surprised if this would be any different for the LG TVs)
Can u test with Ventura 13.3 RC ? I think its been fixed. I have 10b again today.

For me it's 8bits still with Ventura 13.3 RC. :) But as I said, I don't think it actually matters that much. You can't seem to change the setting manually and macOS does whatever it wants for no obvious reasons. There is also a slight chance that the reported bit depth is just not right. Framebuffer and connection bit depth can apparently can also be mismatched. 🤗

Note: after changing display modes a few times and closing/opening the lid like crazy, my external display just switched to 10bits (4K@120Hz, displayport). I don't really understand the logic behind it though and I am not sure if this is new or happened before just did not notice. 🤪 But there might be a change (improvement) in 13.3 after all.

This is an Disinformation.

The Firmware in the OP is for the VMM6100 not VMM7100. The last i seen on your posts is that u have an VMM6100:

Let me clarify. You also posted a VMM7100 firmware (but not necessarily for Cable Matters). I tried it and it worked. The name of the firmware file is: Spyder_fw_USBC_CM_7.02.130forMac.fullrom.

If you look at my recent posts, I had two Cable Matters adapters. The 201388-GRY with VMM6100 and 201388-A with VMM7100. After I got the VMM6100 working, I experimented with the VMM7100 and got it working as well.

I ended up returning the 201388-GRY VMM6100 and keeping the 201388-A VMM7100. It is performing as I reported.
Cable Matters 201388-A VMM7100 using the firmware that you posted for a different brand VMM7100. I also used your EDID. The result:

I was able to get BD to show 10 bit, but unfortunately it is not accurate. Using the VRR info on my LG I was able to get 24Hz at RGB 10 bit, but still the best I could do at 120 is YCrCb 444 8 bit.

@ASZ20 @davidawolf U guys have to check if ure on 4k@120hz RGB 4:4:4. Until now the VMM7100 can not get 10b and RGB4:4:4. @davidawolf have 4:2:0 so he can reach 4k@120hz. This disinformations are not good for this thread, so people can not understand what's going on here. Before post this type of posts plz check all specification on ure tv so u are 100% sure ure on 4k@120hz RGB 4:4:4. And if then plz post some screenshots or photos so we can confirm that u are on 4k@120hz RGB4:4:4.

Only the Anker VMM7100 with custom Firmware can reach 4k@120hz YCrCb 4:4:4 8b non HDR without EDID override. When u override the EDID u will only get 4:2:0 !

Ok. Now I know about the green button on the remote. Press 8 times and this comes up.
120Hz 3840x2160P@120 YCBCR444 8b 4L8. [Cable Matters VMM7100]

Would I do better with the VMM6100?

Registered to chime in here. I, like a couple of others on this thread, received a VMM7100 even though the Amazon listing indicated that I'd get the VMM6100. I reached out to them and this morning they sent me a firmware update that works for the VMM7100.

I actually ended up using Parallels to update the firmware via my M1 mac. The 'VmmDPTool64' exe didn't work but the 'VmmHIDTool' tool that came with it did! I backed up the firmware, then updated it and following that I now see options for 120Hz and 144Hz (which my monitor can go up to) although I haven't tested this with the adapter.

I'm not sure how to check but I am still getting YCBCR color codes although BetterDisplay reports 10bit 120Hz 3840x2160 resolution. So I'm not sure if the firmware now just needs to be modified like the others?

Let me know if this helps anyone! I'm happy for now, even if it's not 110% perfect.

I tried using cable matters adapter(vm6100) and cable matters cable(vm7100) together with my M1 Max MacBook Pro and Sony a90j (ofcourse changed EEID as suggested in this thread) still cannot make it work.

once I apply changed EEID better display goes to 100% cpu and nothing happens on the tv screen. Display name changed from Sonytv -> LG4KHDR in the Mac display settings. but no signal on the TV.

any ideas on how to fix it ?

I tried MOSHOU C-006 (2 meters) with the VMM6100 chip, write the customized firmware and modified the EDID, and use it on my 16inch M1 pro MBP and LG 42 inch C2. It could get 4k120HZ RGB smoothly. However, the signal is not stable, it will lose signal and black out 1-2 times per day, and occasionally after Macbook sleep and wake up. Generally I need to wait for about 10-15 seconds, or manually unplug & plug again to make it back to work. Is that also occurred on CableMatters adaptor?

Try a different/better HDMI cable.

The new Firmware does not work correctly, iam in contact with CM. The VMM6100 are still the best option.

The new modded VMM7100 Firmware are attached, but be carful it's only for testing. And plz confirm with screenshots and pictures if u can reach 4k@120hz RGB4:4:4. Normally there is no EDID override needed with this modded Firmware. But it does not work correctly on my setup.

It is available in the UK store, even with the import fees from the UK to the EU it's a reasonable price:

I'll report as soon as a I get it if it works with the OP's method.
Got this one from amazon.co.uk even though Im from Spain. Got a 201388-GRY with the VMM6100

Followed the OP's steps, an it worked!!

4k, 120hz 10bits.

Sticks after reboots just fine.

I haven't tried High Dynamic Range mode but I don't use it to be honest.

Looks like I won the Amazon chip lottery for the cable matters adapter. FYI for others: When I updated the firmware for the adapter, I used their recommended update, which didn’t work. I had to go back and use the files from OP’s post for each step.

Thank you so much for sharing, OP. Everything looks incredible on my LG C2, and I find the text clarity great with the LG tv set to “5” sharpness.
