Good news! We now have a standard DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adapter from cablematters. I was just provided a new firmware file from them and it works flawlessly. I am using a CalDigit TS4 dock with this adapter plugged into it's DisplayPort out. I have an M2 Max MacBook Pro with an LG CX OLED 48 inch and I am not using better display as it uses the VM7100 chip just like the USB C version. DO NOT USE THE FIRMWARE FROM THE USB C ADAPTER! It will brick your adapter. I have attached the file for the DisplayPort to HDMI adapter below and linked to the amazon link where you can purchase it. Make sure it is model 102101 before you flash this firmware and that it is using VM7100. This is great news for those of us using thunderbolt docks that have DisplayPort 1.4 as we no longer need to use an entire USB-C or Thunderbolt port just for our display out. Hope this helps!

Amazon.com: Cable Matters 8K DisplayPort 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 Adapter with 4K 120Hz or 8K 60Hz, Unidirectional DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1 Cable Adapter in Black, Support for RTX 3080/3090, RX 6800/6900 and More : Electronics
So could I plug my TB3 dock with DP 1.4 into my Windows laptop to flash this? I don't have anything with full-size DisplayPort port besides my dock. How did you flash it?

I've already received my TB4 -> HDMI 2.1 adapter, but now you've tempted me into trying to free up my thunderbolt port.

Hello everyone, BetterDisplay is suggesting that I'm only getting 4k 8b 60hz HDR on my Samsung TV, which is far from the 4k 10b 120hz I was hoping for. Based on this thread, most discussions about TV settings are focused on LG models. I'm wondering if there might be a compatibility issue with Samsung. Can anyone offer any insight or advice? Thank you in advance for your help.

Materials
- CableMatters 201388-A (VMM7100) with the V7.02.112 firmware
- KabelDirekt - HDMI 2.1 licensed cable - 1 meter
- MacBook Air (M1)
- Samsung The Frame TV 2022 (with HDMI port N°4 being HDMI 2.1 for 4K 10bit 444 120Hz HDR input)

My problem was my hdmi cable and once I switch it I got what I wanted
Great news!
What HDMI cable are you using? Is it the licensed one from KabelDirekt as well?
By the way, if you are a Samsung TV user, is there any way to show VRR info (like LG TVs do)?

I have Ventura 13.3.1(a) installed.

> The 8b shown in BetterDisplay is not important and is a bug in macOS, we think.

OK. For reference, when I use the following setup:

  • MBA M1
  • TB3 Dock (with a DP 1.2 Port)
  • DP 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 adapter (DP2HD4K60S)
  • KabelDirekt HDMI 2.1 cable (1 meter)
  • Samsung The Frame TV HDMI 2.1 port
BetterDisplay does suggest 10b (as shown below). This is why I thought BetterDisplay was gathering the correct display info.

> U have to check ure TV.

Sadly, I don't think Samsung TV can show detailed display information as LG TVs. All I Can get are Resolution with Refresh rate. I may have to use Test Patterns (image / video) to evaluate my display.

Certainly, DP2HD4K60S does not suffice the purpose of attaining 4K 120Hz.

I have mentioned this adapter since in terms of color depth, with DP2HD4K60S, BetterDisplay has suggested 10 bits for my Samsung TV whereas with 201388-A, BetterDisplay suggests only 8 bits for the same TV. Given these facts, it may not be a bug of macOS if 8 bits show in BetterDisplay in my setup with 201388-A. However, I cannot be entirely sure.

I would not have had to deal with these nuances if there were any other simple method to find out my current color depth.

On my Pro Display XDR it's also showing 8b in most times. 10b and 8b are switching without any reason. But in ure case it looks like 8b ist limited because of bandwidth limit of your 2.0 adapter, so it can be true.

OK. I am focusing on 201388-A and I'll report if I encounter an easy way to find out the colour depth and Chroma (Sub)sampling on my Samsung TV.

Out of curiosity, can we output Dolby Atmos with 201388-A on macOS? If so, which video/audio player supports it?

Hey guys, Would this trick be needed to get 4K 60Hz RGB 4 4 4 or a normal HDMI 2.0 adapter will suffice? I don't have the money for a fancy pants TV so I got a Hisense A6H which is 4K 60 Hz

I believe you can't, you can decode Atmos into a surround audio stream by choosing the HDMI output as your audio device and select how many channels it is, from ther you can use ARC or eARC and pass it to your receiver

Hey! I have the exact same setup and was wondering if you were able to to get 4k 120 444 (or RGB) HDR and 10bit working? I have RGB 10bit working when the MBP lid is open, bet when I close to dock it the LG C2 changes to 422 8bit. I really need 10 bit to work. If you have any ideas they would be appreciated. super weird that Mac OS changes when its docked.

Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working consistently? Got the Cablematters 6100 adapter along with a bunch of diffferent HDMI 2.1 cables - none of which work consistently. Really random too - works fine one second and then when my Macbook goes to sleep it doesn't work anymore and I have to try a bunch of different resolutions and refresh rates in order to get it to work again. And yes I've been using a combination of uncertified and certified cables from different brands.

I know this is mac forum...but maybe someone had similar issue. So I've connected 7100 usb c to hdmi to my tb4 dock. Connect my windows machine, flashed the firmware from OP. Connect my Mac and it worked flawlessly 4k@120hz10bit HDR. Yay.

However now my windows machine is completely messed up. Best I can set for the same display is 1080p@60hz HDR. And yeah I need to use both mac and pc.

Any help appreciated.

The Firmware ist ONLY for MacOS. So u will need 2 Adapter or use an TB4 Dock with an Native HDMI 2.1 Port.

Hey all,

So I believe I have the VM6100 CM Cable, but I'm a bit of an impasse as I dont think I can use Parallels to check or flash the firmware and my windows pc usb C port isn't DP capable. Any ideas on how I can potentially check / flash the firmware with the hardware I have here? Working on borrowing my partners laptop that has a capable usb c port but that's a couple weeks away so I figured I'd ask!

Thanks for taking a look anyone who does, appreciate y'all!

I've got the VMM7100 adapter (201388-A). I managed to update the firmware using Parallels and the VmmHIDTool from Microsoft Store - it's now showing Spyder_fw_DP_CM, version 7.02.112. The issue is that after the FW update, my LG C2 just shows "No signal". LG's Input is set to PC, adjusting the BetterDisplay connection management settings shown on the OP did not help, the TV is not found by Mac at all.

Is this maybe an issue with the cable, or did I miss something else? I have a 2 meter HDMI 2.1 "8k" cable which works fine @ 120hz on a PC though, seems like it should be fine here too...

EDIT: Yay, got it working! I used the older 7.02.102 firmware from this post. It's now 120hz with YCBCR444 8b 4L8 - seems great, not sure if it could be better somehow with the new firmware? Thanks to everyone involved with this!

I have a MacBook Pro M1 14” 2021 and 6100 adapter and LG C2 tv. I have flashed in the firmware and followed the steps but the 4K 120Hz resolution doesnt exist in the BetterDisplays resolution menu for me. I can get 2K 120Hz, but 4K is locked to 60Hz. What can be wrong? Its not the cable

I got it to work except for 10bpc. Im stuck with 120Hz 4K 8bpc, anyone know how do I fix this?

And another extremely annoying issue that I have is that every time my MacBook wakes up after sleepmode, it automatically forces the LG C2 to duplicate mode and lower res. When I manually set the screen to expand it changes resolution to 4K. How do I setup so it is always two monitors and not duplicate?

Adding on to the dp 1.4 to hdmi 2.1 vm7100 discussion from tony, how do you flash it? I have been trying to get it to work in parallells but when passing through it just freezes the entire VM, then when I do get it to work it just says "spyder chip not detected"

also tried on a windows device, and it just... doesnt work. says cannot find synaptics mst hub

okay, tried connecting it directly via dp rather than through a dock - it now works, says 8bit but im not too bothered about that.

I bought the smaller adapter since it was like 2 years newer, I thought there might perform better, not because it's cheaper, and to help test it out for others that are considering the smaller and more portable form factor.

With the the older CM adapter, do people have to unplug and replug every once in a while to the signal detected? Or does it work perfectly over a long period of time like 2 months without having to replug?
