compared the info of better display with the m1 MacBook Air and the intel desktop found that the intel desktop still recognizes the sink type HDMI ,so I think maybe that's the problem?

For those of you that plan to order the Cable Matters 201388-GRY with the VMM6100 from Amazon.com, this message from Cable Matters Support explains why I received the 201388-A with the VMM7100. If you order now, you should receive the adapter with the VMM6100.

I actually just heard back from our team, and we noticed that the VMM7100 version inventory was accidentally enabled.

Just now, we disabled it, so the inventory should switch back to the VMM6100 version in the next hour or so. If you’d prefer a new VMM6100 version adapter, you may purchase it now through the main listing.

@JWort93 ☝️ Maybe it's time for you to place yet another Amazon order!

I have a VMM6100 cable (that looks to be a rebrand of the Moshou model) coming from 4XEM tomorrow, so if that doesn't work for whatever reason, I'll definitely place another order, thanks for the heads up!

Yes, Intel works entirely differently, the GPU drivers seem to be more intelligent/mature and they can recognize a HDMI port by looking at the DPCD data of a DisplayPort connection (as @joevt pointed out somewhere). You can take a look at AllRez's DPCD section on Intel and see the details. The logic Apple implemented for Apple Silicon seems to be more superficial in this regard.

But for Intel Chip there are another solution to reach 4k@120hz. U have to use SwitchResX and create a custom resolution CVT i think.

Actually the monitor can reach rgb12bit 60hz hdr 4l6 after I edit the edid via dp adapter, so something must have happened after editing the edid, bandwidth much better than hdmi2.0.

After ventura 13.2 solution 4k@120hz is available while the color quality is awful processing just at 420 10bit.

This is still better than on my hackintosh with the cable matters 102101 dp->hdmi adapter, which has the VMM7100 and outputs only 4k@120hz 4:2:0 8b. This is also the output on windows with an AMD RX 6600. It is quite strange, it seems the adapter does not function very well with the gpu, with an nvidia 1060 it does 4k@120hz 4:2:2 10b HDR on windows. That would still be worse than advertised. I wrote an email to cable matters about the possibility of a firmware update and they told me they contacted the firmware provider and that I should wait and that it could take a while before I get an answer.

Can confirm that the 4XEM USB-C to HDMI 2.1 cable contains the VMM6100 and works at 4K 120Hz RGB HDR with Audio with the custom firmware provided in the OP. They also sell a USB-C to HDMI 2.1 adapter, which also uses the VMM6100, so I imagine that would work too.

USB-C Cable I tested: https://www.provantage.com/4xem-4xtpc023b2m~74XEM1AT.htm
USB-C Adapter I haven't tested, but I'm pretty confident would work: https://www.provantage.com/4xem-4xtpc030ba~74XEM1C2.htm

Both are more expensive than the cable matters adapter though, so if you can get the VMM6100 model from Amazon, I think that would still be the better way to go.

They look like the Moshou Adapter. So yeah the another works also! I update the OP with that!

Doesn’t seem to be any truth to what Cablematters said. I placed another order from the Amazon link yesterday, and still got the 201388-A. Just gonna keep this one, cause I don’t want to return another lol.

Cable Matters support first had me order a used version of 201388-GRY from Amazon.com. It should arrive this week. They say it should contain the VMM6100. We'll see about that.

The config protection doesn't really work for me. After sleeping the monitor is set to mirroring and HDR is off.
Also in the example pictures I saw that the selected resolution is 3840x2160 HiDPI while I only have that option as LoDPI.

Any ideas why that may be? I'm using the LG C2 and BetterDisplay 1.4.6.

I bought a thunderbolt to hdmi dongle (https://www.hypershop.com/products/hyperdrive-usb4-mobile-dock) that's HDMI 2.1 and i want to try this trick (have an m1 macbook pro and an lg c2) but i realised i need BetterDisplay Pro to test it and I don't want to pay for PRO unless it works. Can anyone confirm that it will work?
You can download and run a trial of better display to test without paying. My gut is that it probably won't work with that dongle though. It needs to specifically have the VMM6100 chipset in it from synaptics, which it may, but even then needs flashed with the specific firmware provided in the OP, which I'm thinking won't work well with that dongle because it has more than just a the HDMI port on it. Someone previously tried to flash the firmware from the OP on a multi-port dongle that had the VMM6100 from ugreen, and it didn't work.

U have to test it on your own and report us. No-one knows 100% which Adapters and Chipset/Firmware can also enable RGB 4k@120hz 10bit like the one i posted to the OP.

Thanks for your reply. It seems like i need BetterDisplay PRO to be able to upload a custom edid and so i can't test without paying.
I guess if this wont work there's no point in getting a displayport to hdmi cable (that supports 4k120hz) either and try through the adapter either?

Embarrassing question - this will work fine through a dock once flashed and with the appropriate cable, right? I want to use a thunderbolt dock with power so I only need to worry about one cable to my MBP. And from the dock I want the 2.1 HDMI cable left in place.

Also, anyone have a recommended dock for this setup? :)
