I think at this point it’s still trial and error with most cables out there.

@AironMan I think it would be a good idea to add cables to the first post that are reported working

Anyone know if the equivalent moshou cable is also using the VMM6100? Can’t find the adapter on aliexpress to ship to the US, but there is a cable from the same brand available.

This one is the C-006, while the one above that others have noted to work is C-008. Not sure what chips go into each.

My LG OLED 42" C2 does make an update yesterday. After this update I has to force RGB in EDID to get this. Can someone confirm that?

Perfect, thanks.

Regarding your update issues: that's weird... I am holding off on updates for now lol...

Is this the 03.30.45 update? The release notes don't say anything other than "Fixing minor bugs in software".

Yeah. U can update and report if this is also happened to u? I have 2 LG C2 OLEDs and both only get reach after force over EDID. This is probably not a big problem, because whe have to use an EDID anyway. Unfortunately YCBCR4:4:4 is also lossless so I think there is no difference there.

I'm a little bit confused about all this. As I understand this solution works only with LG OLEDs?
And there is no other way around? I was planning to buy the caldigit tbs4 and use some DisplayPort to HDMI 2.1 converter but as I understand I'm still gonna be limited to 4k@60 right?

My Adapter is connected to the Tb4 Dock. The Dock Turn off then TB4 Host is not connected. When I connected my MB 16 M1 MAX it works after moving the Trackpad or press keyboard key. When set separate EDID Serial it also override the Screen and then apply config protect setting set to the new Screen with new EDID Serial. dont forget, u have to set "Auto apply Edid" in BetterDisplay when the new EDID is NOT active !

Hi all, we tweaked the config protection setting in BetterDisplay with @AironMan testing it with his C2 so 4K@120Hz is restored even without alternate serial number with the right config protection settings (set the protected resolution to the desired one and refresh rate to 120Hz). The feature is available in the latest beta. This somewhat simplifies things as creating an alternate identity for the modded EDID is not needed as long as the config protection is active.

It sure isn't easy to find someone with a Windows PC and a USB-C (DP-Alt) port. I want to enable this on my Mac Studio M1 Max and connect it to an LG OLED C2 TV/Monitor. I have all the parts, just no Windows machine with the proper port. I was thinking that my old Alienware Aurora R6 USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 port would work. Wrong.

A couple of questions

  1. I have this adapter: DisplayPort 1.4 to 8K HDMI Adapter Which actually has the VMM6100 chip. I checked.
  2. Does the custom firmware do anything that would prevent the adapter from being used for other devices?

  3. I have this dock: Dell WD19TB, which has 2 DP 1.4 ports. Could I use MY adapter with the updated firmware with that dock?

  4. Are limited to only ONE external monitor if you do this?

Thanks!

U have to order and test this. No one can answer this for u. The Adapter should work on other devices too. There are many Adapters that I have testet and another one too. But your scenario is a new one. Order this Adapter and hopefully the VMM6100 Firmware will also work on your constellation. If your Dock Support 2 Displays u can run 2. But never 2 x 4k@120hz RGB 10bit over 1 Cable, the Bandwidth is not enough for that.

Yep, same here. Purchased a Pro license a couple of weeks ago. Aside from the entire work around EDID modifications, it's just a very convenient tool to use!

Awesome. Thank you for the help. I'll give it a go.

And yeah I'm not sure what the dock would support as it's a thunderbolt 3 dock... I was planning on having a 4k 120hz and a 1440p 120hz. Not sure the limitations there though lol.

But I guess I was also wondering if the mac itself (no docking station) would work doing this with multiple monitors. Say I use this trick for 4k120hz with one of the thunderbolt ports... Could I also use the hdmi port at the same time for a second monitor? Or what about a thunderbolt to 4k 60 monitor?

This cable from Aliexpress explicitly mentions the VMM6100 and has the same 8K 30Hz limitation as the 201388-GRY model (see 5th screenshot) and it's only $13: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256...2s7IGqc&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa&_randl_shipto=US

Ordered a couple to give it a shot, since I've had no luck getting hold of a Cablematters 201388-GRY model adapter.
I read that the new version of the 201388 uses the VMM7100 which is newer and has a 8K 60Hz limitation. That's 201388-A on the Cable Matters website. When ordered from Amazon.com on Mar 6, 2023 I received the VMM7100 adapter.

My solution will use:
Mac Studio M1 Pro ==> Cable Matters 201388 adapter (w/chip VMM7100) ==> 8K certified HDMI cable ==> LG OLED 55" C2 Y2022 television HDMI 2.1 port. I am wanted 4K120Hz resolution.

I ordered the Cable Matters adapter 201388-GRY expecting CHIP VMM6100. Instead, the upgrade tool informed me that it is CHIP VMM7100. The Cable Matters website shows the highest firmware version to be 7.02.120 which came on my adapter.

@AironMan provided a file named "Spyder_fw_USBC_CM_7.02.130forMac.fullrom" and suggested upgrading to version 7.02.130. Since this file is not located on the Cable Matters website, where did it come from and is it safe to use on my adapter?

I'm new at this and am a bit confused as how to use your instructions with this firmware file. Is it possible for you to provide step by step instructions customized for those of us that have the VMM7100 chip? I'm still not clear whether this adapter with this chip will provide the 4K@120Hz to my Mac Studio.

-------------
Here's some additional information that I found:
(1) Jun-28-2022 Announcement. Synaptics have recently released VMM7100, a new single chip USB-C to HDMI 2.1 bvideo interface. [So I'm guessing that this chip supercedes the VMM6100]
(2) The Cable Matters kb posted on Sep 21, 2022 a firmware update for Product 201388-A [which must have superceded 201388-GRY]. This shows that the product now uses the VMM7100 chip and the latest version is 7.02.120.

I am concerned about flashing my adapter to @AironMan 's provided 7.02.130 firmware version without knowing where it came from. I can't find it on the Anker website.

Also, must I still follow the other instructions to use BetterDisplay and the EDID editor?

Success, recommended adapter and cable with studio Max, and LG C2, didn't need to flash the adapter rom too.
Any chance to enable vrr? Did I miss it?

Hello. Your configuration is the same as mine. What steps did you need to follow since you did not need to flash the adapter firmware? Do you know whether you have the VMM6100 or VMM7100 chip? Thanks.
