I don’t get it, have the .fullroms files been edited? Or we using the official ones?

Could be wrong, but the VMM61004k120hzRGB.fullrom certainly seems to be an unmodified backup of the 6.03.002 stock firmware taken from a 201388-GRY adapter, although this wasn't downloadable as a firmware update from the Cable Matters site.

I don’t get it, have the .fullroms files been edited? Or we using the official ones? If they edited I would like to know what software you used for such an operation .

Also I would like to know, is there a way/software to see the signal that macOS serves? From the Mac side and not the television? (To confirm that we getting 4k 120hz RGB 10bit?) cause TV menus are complicated and not complete
Any changes to the binary code would be reflected in the checksum so I think you proved that the .fullrom from the OP was unmodified from the one I uploaded. I never modified my firmware, so it should be the stock one.

Regarding the 4K 120 10-bit RGB, I used the following sites:
10-bit, 4:4:4, 120Hz

I think you would be able to verify the signal visually like this. I'm not aware of any other tool.

Samsung tv’s let you override the EDID from service menu? Flash the EDID of the monitor? Well that’s sound interesting … I don’t know if then all the adaptors and firmwares would work , as that Mac should read that as display port with no extra equipment and software? And possibly 10bit with VMM7100 or whatever?

I wonder if that would be dangerous for the tv though

I just purchased 5 of the cable matters cables from amazon in the USA (Southern California) and received only 201388-A with VMM7100. If someone in Europe wants to purchase a 201388-GRY and confirm it is VMM6100 since it seems much easier to do over there, then I would pay for the adapter and shipping plus an additional fee. Please DM me if interested. I greatly appreciate the help. It seems very difficult to get one of these over here.

That is very unfortunate. I guess I got very lucky on mine.

For those who in China and cannot buy Cable Matters adapter. You can try MoShow adapter. I've tried this adapter with AironMan's firmware just fine.

I've only tried one MoShow adapter. So take my words carefully. I don't know if there is any issue with the different production batches or something I haven't covered.

I've tried UGreen's CM500(Which is based on VMM7100)and UGreen's 50629(Which is based on VMM6100)。

  • For the CM500, when I flashed the firmware, the VMM7100 basically died (USB hub functionality is still working. But the VMM7100 doesn't show anything by HDMI or DP). So this might not be possible with CM500, I definitely not recommend VMM7100 which doesn't support 4k@120 4:4:4 10Bit even if you use AironMan's VMM7100 firmware (also note he is specified only anker adapter will work).
  • For 50629, it is based on VMM6100. But when you flash the firmware, it just won't display anything on the screen. You can see on Windows that your screen is plugged in, but nothing shows up, which means there might be some issue with UGreen's design and firmware on the VMM6100 (designed for the cable matters adapter). I'm sure the problem is by design because I bought two and they both show the same status.
Both of UGreen's products cannot achieve 4k@120hz by only changing the EDID file. My guess here is that UGreen is deficient in some design, for cost control or stability. If this were true, UGreen would not be suitable for this use case.

My spec is:
Macbook pro 14 M1 Mac 32G 1T
LG C1 48 inch
Samzhe HDMI 2.1 cable 1 meter
MoShou type-c to HDMI 2.1 adapter

My EDID file is here if you need.

And for @cheeseburgerer, if you are use the same UGreen 50629 product. You can try to recover by using this firmware below named "backup_6100.fullrom.zip". Unzip this file, you can get a file named "backup_6100.fullrom". This is a firmware extract from 50629. I recovered my 50629 and it is now working fine. Notice that the firmware is only for recover your 50629 from died to work fine. It cannot make your 50629 4k@120 4:4:4 10bit.

Good find, this might actually be useful for people who can't get the VMM6100 Cable Matters adapter. Do you know if these are shipped abroad?

I gave you a useless link for 10-bit above btw. It will only tell you if you have a wide gamut display. You can apparently use this page. It shows banding on my iPhone 14 Pro Max, but not on my M1 Pro 16".

This is slightly off topic, but I have nowhere else to ask. Do you guys think it could be possible to flash the custom VMM7100 firmware on this adapter: https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-101101-BLK-Computer-Adapter/dp/B08XFYHFCK

I am trying to get 4k 120hz 4:4:4 on an LG C2 using an AMD RX 6600. Plugging in the adapter and fiddling with the edid has proven to be a waste of time, I only get 4k 120hz 4:2:0 8b. It seems that the thunderbolt and DP adapters use the same firmware at least the VMM6100 versions did: https://kb.cablematters.com/index.php?View=entry&EntryID=147

Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I used the second display trick to get the resolution applied after turning on the display but sometimes it gets stuck to "no signal". Anybody has a better method to wake it up? My mac is set to never sleep/never turn display off in the settings.

Those Test Patterns have always be download and open with an App that support 10bit also. Some Browser does not shown the pictures correctly. Best is to open in different Apps to see if it works correctly.

U need Ventura 13.2 for native Res HiDPI. Also newest BetterDisplay. If this not work ask @stevemr123 (BetterDisplay) for support. Probably it can be an M2 thing what we missed till now... Anyone else with an M2 here ?

@yukkerz - with an M1/M2 entry level device (not Pro/Max) the max horizontal HiDPI resolution you can get is 3072 pixels. However this translates to a 6K actual resolution which is already much higher than 4K, so even this is highly supersampled. The 1:1 pixel mapped HiDPI resolution for 4K is 1920x1080, so anything above that is fine.

Note: There is a newer BetterDisplay v1.4.4-beta release that has various improvements, including some related to EDID management + adds awareness to the app for displays when an EDID file is used with identifier overrides (the app preserves continuity so even though macOS will handle the display with the new identifiers as a different display, BetterDisplay recognizes within the current app session that it is actually the same display is before just with a different identity).

Oh nice Steve. Is this beta also for pro users? If so, how do we opt in? And should we redo the EDID process, as in: resort to default settings or can we keep using our modified EDID settings? Is am currently using a modified one with changed product number. Thanks for the update!

Just enable `Receive beta updates` under Settings/General and do a check for updates. :)

You saved my day! I ordered the MoShow adapter this morning and I happen to be in the same city as the seller. It's already on delivery, and my phone may ring at any minute! Can't wait to get it tested on my Mac mini M2.

@stevemr123 same question for me. I enable BetterDisplay auto apply the custom EDID with different Serial Number. How can we undo this and have we to undo this with the new beta?(A List of auto apply EDIDs will be nice)

##I add the new Beta to the OP

You should simply click "Restore Factory EDID".

The v1.4.4 version should be aware of the display's identity (you can confirm this by looking at the Identifiers under "Show display information" - you should see a "Current identity" section showing the identity defined by the current override EDID, while the original identity should be under "Identifiers".

Note: if you update to v1.4.4 while the EDID override is in effect, the app won't recognize the original identity properly until you restart the Mac.

the Moshow adapter works on Mac mini M2! Finally running 4k 120hz on TCL 65Q10G!
but the HDMI cable stop transferring audios anymore.

I overwrited EDID with the edited binary file using BetterDisplay. Nothing changed until I tried the bin file shared by @WhiteFish@1994 and @AironMan. Both EDID can do 120hz, but either of them are audio compatible with my TV.

My specs:
Mac mini M2
Moshow adapter with vmm6100 recommended by @WhiteFish@1994
Philips 8K60hz HDMI 2.1 cable
TCL 65Q10G

My EDID bin file, which can't do 4k 120hz, is attached. Many settings are different from OP or @WhiteFish@1994's binary file. Anyone know which settings may relate to the HDMI audio?

edit: just find out the bin file failed to upload on Mac. I will attach it later when i'm back home.
