They could give hdmi 2.1 on 1st gen and they didn’t because they HAD to differentiate somehow m2 machines. It was 2021 and a 4.000€ product for god shakes with a machine more than capable. I told myself I would wait (bec after all these years, I believe that I know their marketing tactics) but unfortunately my 2012 pro retina died after 10 years of service.

Also 4k 120hz is the dream setup for me which you guys achieved and really can’t thank you enough.

6k 8k 144hz 240hz etc etc don’t interest me ATTT ALL! so overkill and so much proceesing power for nothing imho… doesn’t even worth the money and the time you are gonna spent on selling/buying machines (especially for a 42 inch , I mean wtf dude 😅)
I think the actual M1 Models are really fine. No need for a hole new Models. So the M2 Models Chip update and some feature updates like HDMI 2.1 its ok. But no reason to sell it more expensive! Apple has to figure out more MacOS to better work with ARM. I think MacOS took up to 2 Years to be 100% ARM ready in all ways.

Yeah 42 Inch is perfect. But 4k only have about 150 PPI so its not enough to be named Retina :) 6k-8k will be Perfekt u will not see any Pixel and also the texts looks a lot better. I just sold my Pro Display XDR 32" and replace it with an 42 " C2 OLED in Office and Homeoffice. Oleds are impressive!

I want to say thank you guys so much. Finally there's a way to get 120hz on tv without getting a mini Pro.

I ordered an Ugreen USB-typec to hdmi2.1 adapter (with 3 extra USB-A ports) because i can't get Cable Matters in China. Customer Service told me this adapter is of VMM6100. And the Cable Matters' firmware update tool confirmed it does .

I flashed it using cable matters firmware following your steps. The flashing process seemed successfully done, but the cable matters firmware did not match with Ugreen adapter. The adatper became unresponsive after replugged in. Not sure whether it's due to the brand difference, or to the 3 extra usb ports which Ugreen has.

I forgot to backup the firmware before flashing. Customer Service sent a stock firmware file. Luckily, I brought it back to life after flash with Cable Matters firmware update tool. However, the tool did not show the version and status of the firmware anymore, just a blank window.

Then I followed the EDID editing instructions, hoping the Ugreen stock firmware could act as the cable matters one does. But to no avail, as expected.

I don't think Ugreen would do any reconfiguration to the firmware to adjust it to Mac mini. So maybe the only option for me is to order the cable matters adapter from oversea which costs a lot more money due to the delivery fee and over one month's waiting. Still it's all worthy of the money and waiting. 120hz feels like a different machine, especially when I use it with trackpad. Thanks again for all your guys' contribution.
Yes iam also only work with TrackPads. I do not have a Mouse when using MacOS. Only when Gaming it can be necessary.

Buy an Adapter which only have an HDMi Port. When it has some USB Port, the Firmware will not match I think. Before u buy an CM, talk to the support. Ask for delivery an VMM6100 !!

Hopefully in future there are also another Firmware with newer Chipsets like the VMM7100 that work. CM will report me if they can deliver an Firmware which works.

Doesn't work for me. Did you create the EDID, then create another EDID with an altered Product ID or Serial No.?
My Adapter is connected to the Tb4 Dock. The Dock Turn off then TB4 Host is not connected. When I connected my MB 16 M1 MAX it works after moving the Trackpad or press keyboard key. When set separate EDID Serial it also override the Screen and then apply config protect setting set to the new Screen with new EDID Serial. dont forget, u have to set "Auto apply Edid" in BetterDisplay when the new EDID is NOT active !

@cheeseburgerer Maybe try contacting the manufacturer of this cable; its specification states that it has the VMM6100 and they might've made an adapter using the same.

Would someone that has one of these cable matters adapters with the VMM6100 chip in it, mind posting a picture of the adapter itself, and the product packaging (if you still have it)? I think there may be slight physical/model number differences between them and the one I received with the VMM7100, and I'd like to confirm my theory.

A picture of the actual Cable Matters adapter has previously been shared here. I don't recall anybody sharing a picture of the product packaging yet. Since people seem to be buying the adapter from Amazon, it might help to say which country the store is based in; different stores might be stocking different VMM variants.

The Adapter is always the same, only the Serial Number is different. There is no other Model Number I see till now.

Thanks! That confirms my suspicions. Both the unit itself, and the packaging of mine says model number 201388-A, not 201388, and the side with the HDMI plug is a bit shorter on mine than the non-A variant, which I imagine is the difference between the units that contain VMM6100 vs VMM7100 like mine.

I vaguely recall seeing 201388-GRY in the top-right on the back of the packaging somewhere; yours is showing 201388-A.

Mine is from Amazon US, not UK, and it has the VMM7100. So I think the -A version is most likely the one with VMM7100.

Thanks! I found an eBay seller that lists that specific model number, and the pictures look to be the larger older variant, so if my second one is still the -A VMM7100 variant, I may order it from the eBay seller.

So it seems Amazon UK and Amazon DE are currently shipping adapter 201388 (shown as 201388-GRY on packaging) with VMM6100 while Amazon US is shipping adapter 201388-A (on both device and packaging) with VMM7100.

Might also be worth mentioning that while the Amazon page still lists 201388-GRY as the model number, they are shipping 201388-A from the same listing as well.

Ok guys and @AironMan , just came home from my vacay, it’s the moment of truth.

My adaptor has a firmware 6.03.136. (And yes I took backup)

Do I first upgrade to CM’s 6.05.120, and THEN apply your patch?
(Because here CM says they solved issues that I really like) 🤣

Hurry up, I wanna flash it asap , can’t wait (and I don’t do anything without your confirmation)

No you just flash the version that @AironMan uploaded. it would be overwritten anyway.

I ordered from Amazon US and got 201388-GRY. I ordered two of them (returned one but both were 6100) in the last couple weeks so guess I got lucky?

As people here says yes you got super lucky … I saw one dude he said “I ordered 8 adaptors” … that’s like 400€… I would buy M2 with this amount 😅

US ships VM7100 90%
EU ships VM6100 90%

I got 6100 from Amazon.de on first chance thank god

Just curious? What issues did they solve between those firmware versions?

And last last last question…

Old me back in 2017 gave 60€ and took this

Now I ordered an Amazon cable (vendor that I don’t even know for 20€)

Belkin cable is in my sisters house and I am gonna retrieve it, but it is 2 meters..

Bottom line is: I think I saw somewhere that cable must be <1.5m for this to work.

I would prefer to use the Belkin one… you think is it worth the trouble obdain my old (futureproof) cable back?

I don't think there is a length requirement. Someone should correct me if I'm wrong, but I think signal attenuation and distortion are far less of an issue for digital signals. You'd typically see such requirements for analog cables like 3.5mm jack, etc. I'm using this cable and it works just fine.

This article includes the version history.
Cheers. Hmm, that might explain why my Mac randomly disconnected from my LG TV sometimes. Always wondered what was up with that.
