Blackmagic Disk Speed Test or AJA System Test

I configured a 1 partiton RIAD0 so 2 SSDS become one. Just install OS X and your applications and create any folder you want for working/scratch files.

YMW! Enjoy!

Hi Berend,

Here is what I an trying to accomplish and I just want to pick your brain to make sure I am doing this right.
After I instal the Velocity card (which lanes do you recommend? I just have my video card on my MP 5,1) I am planing to Raid 0 it and then use Carbon Copy to make a clone of my main SSD drive that holds my OSX system. Then set up the Velocity SSD as my startup boot drive and finally remove my original main SSD out of my MP.
Is this a right way to do it?
Right now I have Time a Machine doing the back ups but I will add CCC to do an additional back up option for extra security.
Thanks for your feedback.

Now that you have 3 slots free in your MP 5.1, I'd install in slot #3 or #4 to give your GPU more headroom for airflow, depending on your GPU (length) of course.

Correct. Why remove your initial OSX SSD from your system, why not use it? For security I always keep a CCC clone of my previous OSX (10.9), specially now with OS X 10.10. Or in your case, when you're RAID0-ing your OS X, keep your original SSD.

Right now I have Time a Machine doing the back ups but I will add CCC to do an additional back up option for extra security.

Yes, CCC is my (main) #1 favourite back-up program too, fast and bootable. Make sure you back-up to an external enclosure - in case your MP catches fire ;| - and before (if) deleting your current OSX SSD make sure to run your bootable CCC (with new OSX) once to check if it is 100% OK. As said I would keep it for a while.

Thanks for your feedback.

YMW! GL installing and let us know.

You are the man! Thanks for the info!

UPDATE

I did finally put it on my MP.
It was easy to install and do the RAID 0. I downloaded Black Magic and it has been crashing quite a bit. I was able to get a first test and it was around 400w and 651r.

What I notice and is worrying me a bit is that the RAID drives on Velocity have the "eject" button next to their icon and it has been ejecting itself after few minutes I turn on the computer. Also after it happens, I am not able to restart my computer or shut it down from the Menu. I have to press the power button.
Does anybody know why?
Thanks

UPDATE 2
I notice the RAID was offline and it said on disk utility a missing slice on one of the drives.
I have the feeling that one of my EVO drives are defected. now I only see one booting up. Damn.

Update 3
I erased both SSDs and they are working now. The eject sign still next to the RAID 0. I wonder if there is a way to keep it away, so there is never an accident ejecting it.

To be sure what's causing the problem - SSDs and/or DUOx2 - you can install them in the internal bays and create a RAID0 using Disk Utlities and check the speeds for r/w. If they are fine, just remount them back onto the DUOx2.

The SSDs RAID0 will show up in Finder as a removable disk with the ejection option. That's the way it is, in all system wide applications like Disk Utilities, System Profiler etc. In Disk Utilities they show as two removable disks and part of the "name" RAID0.

What are your r/w readings when mounted on the DUOx2?

Cheers...

Hi Berend,
Thanks for the follow up.
After an initial headache the RAiD seems to be stable and running well.
My reads on AJA have been around 714 read and 700 write.
I tried Blackmagic speed test but the test ran for over 2 hours and would not stop. I tried few times without success, so I gave up on that one.
Now the last thing I need is get CCC and make hourly backups. I just wonder if I can make it to any drive inside a folder or I need a dedicate drive just for it.
Cheers.

Dual boot CONFIRMED for new Apricorn Velocity DUO X2!!!

Good to hear!

Just press the same button you stared the benchmark in BM with! ;) You have more or less the same readings as I do, so you're good.

CCC is designed to make bootable clones of your OS, so you should run it to an external (for safety) HDD enclosure/dockingstation. Get a HDD, partition it and select it as your CCC clone destination drive.

Cheers...

OK, I have a drive laying around and I'll use with it. Unfortunately I am out of space on my bays inside my MP. I just need to remember to turn the external drive on everyday. That can be a problem. :D

Jumping in

I just ordered a DUO from Amazon. With rebate, it comes to $99.50. This comes at a good time for me, because OWC is running a sale on Crucial M500 960GB SSDs for $329 after rebate. I plan on running it with the M500 plus my 500GB 840 EVO SSD, one for Yosemite and one for Windows 7. Looking forward to a happy new year with a faster MacPro.

Congrats on your purchase! My current setup is the same using a DUOx2 for OSX 10.10 and Windows 8 on each SSD, a very happy couple indeed!

Enjoy & Cheers...

Is the rebate still good through Amazon? I didn't see it on their page.

Well, I just bought one:eek: and another EVO. BTW, Newegg has the same $40.00 rebate, AND no Sales Tax, AND if you buy it on a mobile device and use MasterPass you get another $15.00 off. One of my Solo x2s will be up for sale soon:rolleyes:

Congrats on the cheap buy Lou! Cheers...

Yep, but it's a little hard to find. It's on this page, on the line that says "Post-purchase rebate:$40.00 Get rebate forms "

Got it!

The Amazon app did not display the rebate at all. Went to desktop site. #

^^^^OK, I get your point, but with no SALES tax and with MasterPass, for me it was savings of $25.15. Nothing to sneeze at.

I received my Velocity Dou x2 and it works as expected EXCEPT, and this is a BIG EXCEPT. My Velocity Solo x2 will not boot when the Duo is installed, pull the duo out and the Solo boots fine. The drive in the Solo shows up fine on the DeskTop, and works fine, but it just won't boot.

I talked to Apricorn Tech Support, and they have duplicated the issue and they believe it's because the Marvel controllers don't work well together. Not sure what I'm going to do at this point.

Lou

^^^^Yes, the Dou x2 boots fine with the Solo x2 installed. In fact when I choose the disk on the Solo, it boots to the Duo.

I discovered the same thing when I got one of the first DUO x2 cards sold. I also had issues with the Solo x2 and my original eSATA card ... probable multiple controller issues.
