I'd exchange mine but I think I got pretty lucky with the display and my battery is 2789 mAh according to coconut battery.

I agree that it shouldn’t be there but I’ve been sucked down that rabbit hole before. Numerous exchanges, returns and rebuys. At a certain point it’s either not worth the time and hassle to have a “perfect” phone or it’s time to move on from Apple. Cause honestly their QC isn’t anything special (others seem to be better). It’s the customer service that sets them apart.

I'm curious... do you own a car?

What do you do when it gets a scratch/dent/chip in it from a rock that flew out from some unknown person's car 100 ft in front of you?

Serious question.

5 phones returned? Wow!

If you do own a car did you spend 3 days going over it with a magnifying glass like you do your phones?

P.S.

Don't think I'm saying you don't have a right to be picky... it is a lot of money. All I'm saying is if you look hard enough you can probably find a flaw in each and every iPhone shipped.

Oh wait, did you find one that makes you happy? You obviously didn't look hard enough. There's a speck there somewhere. Find it.
What's a "magnifying glass"? Is that what you use regularly to read? ;)

And yes I keep my cars pristine...if I get a dent I get it fixed and I know it was my fault not the manufacturer's or the dealer's who sold me the car. Now if it had a dent before I even drove it out of the dealership, it goes back, gets fixed or no deal, get my reasoning?

And yes, my 5th one was a good one and it still is, thankfully. Perseverance pays and any future buyer might benefit from the inconvenience I had to go through, because I am positive the manufacturing faults were noted by the Apple Store to be addressed.

I know what you mean. That rabbit hole can extended further down. I always set an end line and 5 times was as far as I was going before I call it quits. Thankfully it was my lucky 5th this time.

This is an expensive phone, and when they advertise close ups shots of a “perfect” phone, then that should be the representative of the actual product period, no excuses. If you let them persuade you to think the defect is normal, they're making excuses and that is something I cannot tolerate.

It's a hard decision indeed. But you know, I didn't see any difference in batteries between the ones I got so no worries there I think. The displays were also flawless and I think the OLED tech had something to do with it. No more backlight/flashlight/clouding issues on these screens...they're truly black when black and white when white. The colour shifts were not bad either between the ones I was able to try. And there was absolutely no dead pixels on them which is amazing!

I have dust in the lower and upper camera as well. It doesn't appear to affect photos (hopefully it doesn't in the future either). The nearest Apple Store is 50 miles away and I hate returning things. I'll probably just stick with this one because I like the screen. I've had issues with OLEDs in the past where the whites aren't consistent;

one side might have a yellow/greenish hue compared to the other.

Oh man, sorry about what you have. 50 miles is pretty far and your only choice is to call AppleCare. I can tell you though that the screens in all of the ones I exchanged were perfect so no great worries there.

The Unfortunate part if dust or fibers get trapped underneath the camera lens cover, is that it can't be repaired by Apple. They just replace the device altogether, which can be problematic if they don't have available stock to do so.

ADDITIONAL INFO: Thank goodness all is still going well with my last replacement so I'm happy!

Upon studying this further, I think I have a potential suspect (or suspects). If you notice, the flash unit that is between the lenses is not a sealed part but is neatly tucked around a cutout. The same thing with the tiny microphone. Those cutouts which are exposed to elements, like wind, can potentially push dust specs in or ruffle ones that may already be inside the camera assembly. Now I would assume there's some kind of seal around these holes to prevent this from happening but different assemblers might be putting different amounts of seal per phone.

Again, this is just my speculation until someone out there can confirm or show us the insides of these assemblies. I wonder if iFixit has done it yet...hmm...

Got this and from the looks of it, my suspicions might be true. What do you think?:

First post here, long time lurker for years though.

The iPhone X is my 5th iPhone, first iPhone was the 3G. I’ve also got dust in my bottom camera lense after less than 48 hours usage. Contacted Apple live chat they’d never heard of the issue. Got an Apple Store appointment on Tuesday so hoping for an exchange. I’ve never had to exchange an iPhone before.

Anybody else had luck exchanging their iPhone X?

Dust on both lens. Went to my local Apple Store and they have one unit left. Replaced and still dusts inside. Just finished chatting with Apple Support and they are sending me a box to ship my iPhone to technician. Hopefully my 2nd replacement is dust free.

Was that only one unit left available for replacements? I think I read here they do keep brand new replacements in stock for situations like this?

I think after reading the OP has replaced theirs a few times and reading your post I will open it in store with staff so if there are any issues on the 2nd, I’ll get another one.

Yeah but since I purchased mine from Verizon, I can’t get a brand new sealed replacement :(

That sucks sorry to hear that. But surely all replacements at this stage will be new anyway? Hoping Apple will have enough replacement stock.

Got mine on the launch day and noticed today that my pictures have a blurry spot on them when taking pictures in white/bright environment, and what do I know, when looking at the rear camera then there are small white specs under the glass. Pretty bummed.

Thanks for proving to us that the small dust specks do affect photos somehow. Although not immediately noticeable unless you examine further, it is a problem.

OP, any luck with your new replacement? Has it held out well so far with no new dust specks? I'm hoping we've just been unlucky and got loose seals and the replacements are fine. If the seals are loose on everyone we'd see a lot more posts and a statement from Apple but there is nothing.

Thanks for asking, rider900. Since my last replacement, which was perfect with no dust whatsoever, it stayed with no dust until now...3 days so far. The phone has been used as normally as I would my last phones and so far it stayed dust free.

I am quite please with it and it proves there are ones out there that are dust resistant.

Sorry but I don't have another camera to take a close up shot of my lens but I've checked them thoroughly just now and they are pristine inside the glass.

My theory on the seals being loose is again just my own theory. But since I experienced getting phones with clean lens at first and having dust in them after only using them for a bit tells me there might be a seal problem. Until this is escalated, it won't be investigated by Apple.

Take a close look at the photo in comment #29, dust particles are at the edge of bezel and not on the lens, should have no effect on your photos.

Seeing as the phone has an IP57 dust/water proof rating, this theory would indicate a complete failure of the seals. IP57 should not allow any dust or water into the device, and there wouldn't be enough air/wind to move things around inside either. Most likely situation is vibrations from normal usage, moving it around, etc.. that is shaking the dust loose.

I ordered via Verizon and will go to their store (corporate) today after work and have them send me a new unit ... a hair under the lens cover is clearly not acceptable

Check out my post #40. I didn't even notice the dust before I spotted the blurry blob on my picture. If it wouldn't be visible in the pictures then I wouldn't give a damn. Upper camera is quite dusty, the lower one doesn't have a spec on it.

given that all display units I've seen at Best Buy and apple store had ZERO dust / hair in the lenses.... I think it's just normal to expect the same for the units being shipped to average consumers...

I wouldn't appreciate dust behind the lens cover of a new Nikon camera either...

Can’t we just use iFixit steps to take the camera out and blow out the dust? Seems like easy enough process.

I like my phone and don’t want to chance it with other defects, but little speckle is bugging the crap out of me.

What do you guys think?
