I exchanged my X today because of a dead pixel .. got a new one that has dust in the lens. So far I don’t notice any effect on pics. Think I might just keep this one for now. Maybe in the future I’ll get it checked out

Can’t we just use iFixit steps to take the camera out and blow out the dust? Seems like easy enough process.

I like my phone and don’t want to chance it with other defects, but little speckle is bugging the crap out of me.

What do you guys think?
LOL! I take this as a sarcastic post and it’s funny, no kidding.

But if you’re serious, know that opening a unit that’s supposed to be sealed from elements will introduce more dust inside when opened, therefore defeating your purpose.

If you can physically see dust on your photos, dust isn’t on the lens it’s on the sensor. A dust speck on the lens doesn’t effect the final photo.

Why is that?

I know with DSLR’s if the aperture is a low number (wide) like 1.8/2.0/2.4 then it’s nearly impossible to see sensor dust on your image. Only when you go up to higher numbers (like 8.0 on my camera) can you start to see the sensor dust... perhaps that’s translates to the phone camera too (I think it’s like 1.8/2.4 or something). Could be wrong though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Ok, just to keep you guys updated. I've just returned home from the Apple Store, turns out I didn't need a genius appointment as i'm within my 14 day return period. Explained that there was dust stuck in the camera lense, staff had no issues with me exchanging it for a new one. Opened it in store, examined camera lense with staff and no issues. They were really helpful, I was in and out within 30 minutes.

I have just set my brand new iPhone X up at home, put screen protector on and on the back of the phone noticed a small spec of dust in the bottom camera lense again!!

Whilst in the store, I looked at the staff members personal iPhone X which had no issues, i also looked at the display models which had no issues. Either I'm really unlucky or this really is a problem with weak seals perhaps.

Has anybody else got dust stuck in their lense?

Got my hairy X swapped out against an absolutely spotless “white envelope” unit. Took maybe 30min including wait with no appointment. Very happy with Apple customer service

I can absolutely relate to you. Examined my new phone after the exchange and it was perfect in the store. A few minutes after walking around the mall, examined it again and there it is, a dust speck. My last phone is perfect and I had it for days now. Good luck on your next exchange if you're planning to go further.

When I shattered the screen on my iPhone 6 I took it to the Apple store to have the screen replaced under AppleCare. The Apple employee looked closely at my phone and noticed a speck of dust in the camera (that I had never noticed) and declared that since there is a dust speck, that the phone actually needed to be replaced and that I'd get the replacement at no cost.

Maybe there's a bit of strategy to having a speck of dust in there - later on when you crack your screen you can push for a free replacement device instead of having to pay for the replacement screen.... :)

Just glad to know it's not just me! It almost feels like i've done something wrong to have got dust in there already in about 10 minutes. This is my 5th iPhone from over the years, i've never had an issue at all before. Yes I think I will be exchanging, I've also noticed a very slight scratch on the bottom near the word iPhone which I didn't notice in the store, this is within 10 minutes of opening it so it's not me.

I also rung apple technical support, they'd never heard of the issue before. Wonder if this will be acknowledged by Apple officially.

I just noticed when I look at the front camera at certain angles it looks like theres a crack in the lens or a massive speck. Camera works perfectly though. At other angles I don't see it. Maybe its the reflection of the lens at certain angles...

Ha, I was just searching for this exact issue. I noticed this on my front camera but after reading your post, I looked again and this time I rotated the phone and the speck/spot stayed toward the edge closest to me no matter what position the phone rotated. So I assume this is just some sort of reflection. Scared me for a moment.

Just noticed that I have a bright speck of something on my top lens. Looks like it is out of view of the actual lens, but within the round cutout for it.
Don't think I'll bother with the return/exchange process as I want this phone to take photos on my overseas trip next week. But I will also be out of the 14-day return period by the time I get back... :/

I had a spec of dust within one of my rear camera lenses that was visible in photographs; 256GB Space Gray.

Apple exchanged with a white box unit, no questions asked. The replacement seems perfect.

Yup my gfs 8 has the exact same thing so I think it’s just a reflection like you’ve said

Thoughts I would add what happened with my iPhone X. Got it on launch day noticed a day later there was some dust on the bottom camera and a little speck there as well. It did not affect the photos. Went to the Apple Store and they replaced it with a brand new one. Checked the lens whilst I was there briefly and in more detail when I got home and could not see any dust. Kept checking over the last few days and could not see anything in the lens. Today took a look at it and now can see a little dust on the bottom camera. So something is def coming in after use.

I thought I had dust on previous iPhone cameras until I realised it was internal reflections on the glass/lens. Granted not all of these examples could be that, but some could be.

Quite possibly my first one def had a speck in it...(I forgot to mention) the Apple guy took it to the back and look at it and said it was a metal piece! Although it didn't look like metal with my eye.

My replacement phone def has a little dust in it on the side.

Yeah, light reflections can sometimes fool you for being dust so examine your lens carefully before going back for a replacement.

I told the Apple team, they weren't that surprised! I checked out other phones and they had dust as well.

[doublepost=1510163772][/doublepost]Hi all I got 2 - 256GB phones a space grey and a silver. The space grey has like a very tiny longish dust particle from the edge of the lense but i cant see anything in the pictures.

I have played the exchange game before and trust me its not fun... apart from the dust all is good and I cant see it so i guess will stick to it. If an issue comes up I can Alway change it.

This is my exact scenario too! Checked in the store, all was perfect after a short time using there was dust in there. And the pictures posted above showing the display models clearly show there is a factory defect. This should not be happening on an over £1000 phone. I am still deciding whether to replace mine for the second time, the spec of dust is more minor however I still have a tiny hairline scratch straight out of the box, but the display seems better with the colours on this replacement device so unsure at the moment whether to replace.

If you’re happy with it, there’s no sense playing the exchange game.

If you’re not 100% happy with your purchase, you have to take care of it or you’ll never be totally happy. I know, there is always a chance you’ll be getting another with a defect, but the 14 day period is there for a reason and there are good units out there. It’s your call.
