One cannot deny it is an ingenious use of the space by Apple, taking what is otherwise dead screen space and not only finding a use but finding one that can be tailored to different apps.

I think the part some people are forgetting is that the screen is an OLED, so when it turns off those pixels, it will merge seamlessly with the Face ID cutout.

Kind of genius way of owning it in my opinion, though I’m not surprised they found a way to make it more useful than “look it’s not a notch anymore!”
I wholeheartedly agree. I just honestly thought it was an excuse not to have a notch anymore but with the software implementation, 🤩 wow, it has lots of purpose now. AND, It’s open to third parties

I like it too, very unexpected and appreciated, but let's see how does the dynamic island, notifications etc looks when the dark mode of the iPhone is on...
If you take a closer look at ALL the screenshots about the dynamic island that Apple showed us during the keynote, they were all made while the iPhone had the Dark mode off. So I wonder why they didn't let us see also how does that look with Dark mode on, perhaps it doesn't look really good as when the dark mode is off.

I will be able to see the Twins score without launching the MLB app, in a nice out-of-the-way location without devoting a whole widget to it. Or, perhaps how Gael Monfils is doing today in his match with Casper Ruud at the Australian Open. Or some such.

(Or, if the developer gets on it, my blood glucose. Come to think of it, that's more important)
I'm not usually one of "these people," but... this exact kind of thing has been possible in the Android status bar since forever, and Apple could have also allowed it there, but instead they've fashioned what seems like a somewhat awkward kludge involving the camera cut-outs that they insist on using.

You’re missing that you all have complained about the notch since the iPhone X. Now it’s functional, you don’t see a benefit.
Can’t please everyone.
I know plenty of people that like the notch. Personally I always thought the notch looked awesome on my 11 and now on my 13.

Not to be “that guy” either but Face ID isn’t just some basic selfie camera we’re talking about here lol

I love it. Its so satisfying to see, 120hz makes it trully eyecandy. The only thing that wowed me.

I truly hope the camera IS a significant upgrade, and still hoping we get more battery as this display can go to 1hz plus the new A16,(probably) the new less energy using Ddram could make a leap of 1-2 hours on top of the 13 Pro/Pro max series.

Why does nobody see the obvious problem of smudges on the selfie lens with this dynamic island? It‘s supposed to be touched on, directly on the lenses and sensors. Photos/face ID will be crap if you dont polish it regularly before use.

I see it as a Touch Bar like feature. Looks like a cool gimmick at first, but will prove to be almost completely useless after a while. We’ll see.

OMG I can't believe that we get a notch island. And a dynamic island at that! Thank you Apple for blessing us with this notch dynamic island!! o_O

It's not useless.

The TB was useless because you have a keyboard on your Mac that can be programmed to do anything you want. Adding a touchscreen with actions is redundant when a key combination could do things faster.

But on an iPhone, space is limited and you need the cameras for Face ID and front-facing. So why not take advantage of that space by doing something different, and allowing developers to take advantage of that space to convey important information?

Because you should be cleaning your screen regularly anyway, even if it's just a quick wipedown on your shirt/pants.

and in the iPhone we already have a massive screen that can be programmed to to do anything you want. Now this will drive a lot of things that were already better suited in other regions in the screen to use the island just for the sake of it (new gimmick). I’ll bet in a few years when they get rid of the island entirely it will be a foot note in iPhone history.

I was planning to upgrade from my iPhone 12 Pro anyway because I wanted the larger screen of the Pro Max and the Pro Motion display but this Dynamic Island is just incredible. This is classic Apple innovation and I love it! The best part about this is this is just the beginning. History tells us that iOS 17 next year will introduce refinements and improvements to the Dynamic Island (probably in preparation to roll it out to the entire line).
