Because people have been presssing their head against the notch and dragging their fingers across the notch to bring down notification tray for years and the smudging hasn't been a big problem.
You drag your fingers left and right besides the notch down the screen, not actually over the notch. Now you‘re going to touch the „pill“ all the time. Big difference.

Taking what other brands would try to hide or just call what it is and branding it into a feature/product/highlight is what Apple does best.

Everyone without their own private Dynamic Island will drown in fomo! 🤣

All the notifications of any app will work with Dynamic Island or developers have to adapt their apps to Dynamic Island for notification-system?

How many people think the name is stupid? I just call it pill shaped hole.

As for the implementation, it looks cool in video and demo but I want to see it myself in person.

No i dont, i invoke notification center by dragging from the center right over the notch. Apple's own description of the feature also tells people to do it from the center: "swipe down from the center of the top of your screen.", so I assume that is how most people are doing it.

As I said, people talking on the phone are also pressing their ear/greasy hair against the top edge of the screen. Its just not a big deal, I think modern screens have some kind of fingerprint resistant coating anyway and people who are anal about quality of the photo aren't using the selfie cam. Instagram teens are piling on filters and other effects.

I love Dynamic Island just as much as I hate its stupid freaking name...which is to say, a lot.

Do any journos with hands on access to the iphopne 14 pro know how Reachability works with it?

i.e. does the dynamic island stay in place when the screen pulls down, or does it follow the rest, but then leave the blank pill in place as well?

I don't think anyone outside of Apple has had extended hands-on time with the new Pro models other than the limited time they got at Apple Park.

Wouldn't expect these questions to start getting answered until review units start making it out into the wild.

But.. when will the Island finally sink? (!RemindMe 5 years "Is the notchless future now?")

My guess is, the top area well be completely black and you will see the pill "move" with the content. At least that would make it less weird and seems like an easy solution.

I don’t agree that it’s brilliant. There’s less usable screen real estate. And 21:9 video content is going to be cut off with the new notch.

It won't because there is actually tons of empty display space on the non-notched end of the phone when displaying 21:9 videos, they just need to shift it down slightly and there should be no problem. 16:9 and 16:10 will be unaffected because they don't go anywhere near the edge of the notch currently.

Beyond that, I just opened like 20 apps and I can't find any that put content near the notch, it makes me wonder if there was already some guideline/restriction in place that discouraged devs from doing it. Even full screen+landscaped games like genshin impact and call of duty seem to have a bit of a "buffer" around the notch.

A real WOW moment for me. One of those where Apple show how good they can be with UI.

It was funny that this was rumoured before hand but even with mentions of the pill expanding and changing nobody worked it out.

The 14 Pro is 24 pixels taller, which might make the space from the bottom of the screen to the notch/pill about the same same?

Most video being 16:9 means there are black bars anyway regardless of the phone or notch.

Has anyone seen a clip of the new battery icon with the Dynamic Island or is it old battery icon only?

I'm not sold on this thing. I had time to ruminate and even after seeing what others stated, the jury is out on whether its useful or not - at least to me.

I don't even notice the notch on my iPhone and MBP, will this make the notch more noticeable? Will it actually make the notice more useful? I really don't know

They've put a lot of money and effort into making this project one of the key features of the new iPhone 14 Pro. So I think they're planning to use this concept for at least 3 more years, before they have the technology that they need to move on to a complete notchless design.

I love Dynamic Island. Brilliant. And nowbody knew anything about it in front that made it even more WOW for me.

Can't wait how it will feel in real life on the iPhone.

I have a feeling that this feature could be hated as much as the touch bar on the MBP. Don't get me wrong. I like the concept and how much effort they've put into this. But do I have to clean the "dynamic island" always before shooting a selfie because I always touch that region? Will I accidentally trigger features that I don't want to trigger because I wanted to press something else in the proximity of the dynamic island? I need to see real life usage of that feature before I'll buy the phone.

Its funny you bring that up, it very well could be viewed as derisively as the touchbar. For me personally, I'm not hating this as as I did the touchbar, but then I need and use function keys, so the touchbar started off poorly for me

that software optimization around that island /pill is still better than having the static island alone finally some innovation from apple. but why didnt they do this in 2018 ?
