It's a brilliant idea! Android manufacturers must be feeling the burn, they've had that cut out for years and they did nothing with it. I bet they'll be firing up their copying machines in a hurry.

I am an Android user, BTW. Just saying it like it is.

Why does nobody see the obvious problem of smudges on the selfie lens with this dynamic island? It‘s supposed to be touched on, directly on the lenses and sensors. Photos/face ID will be crap if you dont polish it regularly before use.

Because people have been presssing their head against the notch and dragging their fingers across the notch to bring down notification tray for years and the smudging hasn't been a big problem.

No they haven't... they have small pinholes for the FFC

Off topic, but in iOS16 do incoming texts appear from the bototm up? if so that sounds cool, and easier to interact with.

But we need a better name for it.
I'm not saying to call it the Expandi-brow.
Or the Info-pill.
but if you want to go with the island theme, or sand bar, maybe call it the Widget Bar. Except not that either.

Dynamic Island is just not good.

Not at all, dynamic island is an great name because its an attention getter and now its a combination of words that will be uniquely associated with the Apple/iphone. If you're running down a list of features .. it has that "Wait..wtf is that?" quality that something like widget bar would not. And thats exactly what you want for your big headline feature of the product.

If the feature turns out to be popular and is well received from a UX perspective, there's nothing stopping them from reserving those pixels at the top even if they yank the hardware and do some under-display fingerprint tech that works even better than FaceID. Of course, people are still going to want to take selfies, and the concept of an edge to edge display is so standard now-a-days that placing the camera above the display would seem like a step backwards, so I think they'll always have to have something there...

This could very easily evolve to be Dynamic Bar and include the entire status bar, which up until this point has been very static.
I'm hoping this method migrates down to the non-Pro models and the notched MacBooks, and evolves further. Very unexpected but also very smart integration of UI with the hardware.

I agree. Was completely surprised with the way Apple handles the pill hole. With this, the pill is almost "invincible" as many of the phone's UI are utilizing it as part of the UI itself. Really brilliant.

I agree with most here - if they can't get rid of the notch yet, this is a really innovative way to accommodate it. Given Apple cling on to new designs like this, I'm guessing we'll porbably have it until about the iPhone 17, so they've bought themselves more time to nail the notch-free screen.

Totally groundbreaking innovation. Very impressed. As someone said elsewhere it makes pretty much all other iPhones look obsolete. This announcement today is surely up there with the original, the 4 and the X. Will 100% be upgrading to the 14 Pro, as if they kept the price the same too
groundbreaking? hyperbole much? :) It does look pretty cool although it's more or less gimmicky, but I'm sure it'll make some ppl upgrade.

This is a good example of embracing what others consider as a "flaw" and owning it. They made a feature out of it instead of hiding using wallpapers.

Yeah. There's a lot of Kool-Aid being drunk on this thread.

But still, a clever way by Apple to rebrand the notch and turn it from a bug into a feature!

I still can't wait to see the back of it though. The pill looks garbage in full-screen video.

I don’t agree that it’s brilliant. There’s less usable screen real estate. And 21:9 video content is going to be cut off with the new notch.
