Wired still offers the opportunity for superior audio quality, no latency, not dead when you want to use them, even less risk of loss by one falling out, much longer use life, "just works", much lower consumer cost, broad compatibility with everything, etc.

Except for getting rid of the wire, Bluetooth is basically inferior in every way.

Personally, my experience with wired earbuds has been less than stellar. Other than better mic quality and lower cost, they offer little. Earbuds were frequently getting yanked out of my ear because it was snagging on things, wires created a thumping sound while doing a workout, the wire/connectors fraying or breaking in the internals, looser and looser headphone jacks etc etc. All of my bluetooth earbuds and later my AirPods have lasted longer than any of the wired ones I owned in the past. In fact, I've only had one pair of BT headphone break (the BeatsX) and that was because the wire connecting the two buds broke.

Silicone Tips can cause ear wax to stick to my ear, and after a few months, it gets so bad that I have to replace the ear tips to prevent an ear infection.

Silicone tips can be detached from the earphone and washed with soap and water as often as you need to. But that is also not the case for the majority of people, so if you prefer a different design, go for it, but Apple should be including by default a design that actually works and is what most people want, instead of trying to "think different" with a product that simply does not work (falls out of ears) for many people.

I feel like I should throw a pair of EarPods into my bag as a backup just because it apparently so deeply chafes the cognoscenti on MacRumors.

I like my AirPods way, way better, but the old skool wired ones are fine in a pinch. It's not a big deal. Maybe the real problem is being concerned, for even a moment, what sort of headphones someone else chooses to use.

Again, except for the wire, bluetooth is inferior in every way. You just posted one big paragraph about the wire.

The 2 real upsides for bluetooth:
  • No wire
  • MUCH more profitable for Apple (a seller benefit that does nothing for us consumers)

Stop cheerleading for a brand, it's not healthy.
Stop cheering for authoritarianism, it’s not healthy.

Also in case you forgot Apple is an AMERICAN company. Here in America we do things differently: Imperial units of measurement, degrees in Fahrenheit, 12-hour time. We don’t have to think about global standards; we set our own. And even though the rest of the world seethes they can’t help but burn with envy. ❤️

It's so sad that EU government tyranny led to this. Apple has no freedom to innovate anymore.
Really ? A new low for this forum I feel and if apple want to innovate why are we still getting lossy audio from your BT earbuds Mr Cook ? You've literally had years to fix this....

Wondering if the usb-c port will allow for any usb-c earphones , like the ipad does , or if it'll be proprietary and force you to use apple's only

Very likely to be standardized, so likely that ANY will work. Else, Apple would likely again be cast in the same light that moved a GOV to spend time & energy on creating a law to "force" Apple to adopt something they had already adopted on the rest of their key tech offerings.

If proprietary, expect new law to again "force" Apple to be more consumer friendly.

Meh,the law is about charging , not every possible device connectivity

Might wanna tone down your american inferiority complex.

Yes, I understand, but the spirit of the law is to break the lock of ONLY being able to charge with a proprietary connector owned and fully controlled by a very profitable, increasingly dominant company.

I doubt the legislators would look favorably on the solution being adjusted to be proprietary so that the ONLY option would again involve buying from the same company- and only that company- that drove them to make the law in the first place.

Basically, Apple needs to play ball here. Else, I expect more GOV(s) to enact more laws.

Yes, too bad Apple let it come to this. Lightning was innovation, ahead of its time. But today, it's only slightly nicer than USB-C, which is easily offset by the benefit of universal compatibility.

Government regulation of this is the worst outcome. Apple should have switched voluntarily or prove that there is still room for innovation by actually continuing to innovate. There's no-one else to blame.

This standard might be great for small electronics that don't see a lot of "in-n-out" action on the port but I don't think this was well thought out when it comes to phones.
But you know that literally billions phones have shipped with USB-C already and the port wear apocalypse hasn't materialized.

Bluetooth headphones are not a fad either ...
Yeah, your right, the Fad is not caring enough to listen to good sounding music and accepting the distortion and low fidelity of wireless headphones.

I know, I know, they sound just fine to you. Good, but just because you think a 20 year old VW is a great car, does not make it a Porsche. But that is the way you seem to think.

Just because it is good enough for you, does not mean it is good to everyone. Some people have higher standards.

I wonder why this hasn’t happened already. Lighting not being compatible with neither the Ipad or the mac and having to use dongles.

I ve lost two dongles and one broke totalling to 27 pounds. Such a waste of money just because apple likes collecting royalties.

I’m hopeful that iPhone USB-C popularity inspires a USB-C cord for my ATH M50x headphones. [Edit: hadn’t searched in a while, found a couple versions on eBay, but on second thought, I don’t want to risk wear and tear to the port on my iPad with a cheap cable. I already miss the headphone jack, lol.
