Plextor products have a great reputation for quality […]
At least before 2010, when it was downgraded to a brand used for Lite-on products.

[…] if you want to use Firewire gear with a modern Mac you're stuffed.
There are several Thunderbolt docks with FireWire 800, such as the one @TheShortTimer mentioned.

But if you wanted to connect a DVI monitor to an ADC port […] you were stuffed […]
I’m counting four ADC to DVI adapters on this list. :)

The dongle was a niche thing and Apple seems to have discontinued it, and it appears that it was never cloned by Chinese eBay sellers, so if you want to use Firewire gear with a modern Mac you're stuffed.
Yeah, I had a hunch that audio was probably the reason behind it. Even I have a Behringer thingamajig somewhere but, as TheShortTimer has pointed out, there were other, possibly better, alternatives out there which are not fetching as huge a price as this dongle and I couldn't work out why this adapter, in particular, was hitting record highs.

I mean, I picked up a Thunderbolt display for peanuts recently to use with my Trashcan and it has a built in TB hub including a FW800 port, as one example.

Kijiji is such a hilarious place to troll for used Macs. We get nonsense like this, or stuff way at the other end of the spectrum. One seller I saw once was selling almost pristine-condition Mac Pro 5,1s from a business that was getting rid of them, sans hard drive, for like $50 each. Man, I wish I'd gotten one.

And it's not just Macs too. Thanks to Kijiji, I scored an almost BNIB first edition copy of Celia Conway's Intuitive Tarot - an out of print deck worth hundreds - for $50. I couldn't believe it, even after I was holding the box in my hand.

Lending credence the FW-to-TB dongles are being viral-purposed for use on current Macs (and maybe even other current Apple devices), this lot is selling the dongles alongside a matched set of TB2-to-TB3 dongles. The miniDV cam thing seems possible, but so too does digging out other FW devices from storage for use on current systems, Apple or otherwise. This one’s an actual auction (not mine, mods) and there are actual bidders.

::reluctantly starts eyeing the FW-to-TB spare I own, with original box, and wondering whether I need a spare::

I recently bought this thing just for the sake of getting an adapter and cable which came along as a bonus LOL
For 30 bucks it was tolerable.

The thing which always shies me from getting stuff from the Mercaris and Rakutens and Yahoos is the impressive shipping costs to get stuff over to North America. :(

I did the Buyee thing for a while. I think it came with inbuilt translation which was a must for Japan's Yahoo auctions. Shipping wasn't too bad to Europe if you chose the economy option and weren't in a hurry. Then Covid hit and the EU reformed its VAT laws. The economy shipping options vanished and you were going to have to factor in 20%+ for import sales tax on both the item and its associated shipping cost. Now, Rakuten et al are no longer an option unless it's for a scarce Japanese item and money's no object. Pity as there are so many desirable things there at nominally affordable prices until shipping kills it.

I saw a new in box PowerMac G5 there once for something reasonable like 200+, but had to discard the idea of buying it due to shipping.
Same happened for IBM Power7 workstation (not brand new, but very cheap; however, it is 40 kg of shipping…).
