this is going to take like a month to download on my 56k AOL dialup connection

I think your 'jesting'- hope so.

If not is 3 or 4g not nearby?

I think the name of this thread should be changed from "El Capitan Release time?" to "Comparison of speeds of broadbands of different countries" :p:D

or 'what to discuss before 13.00 hrs EST'!

Are you going to just click updates in apps store at 18.00hrs? and download that way (after backing up of course).

I'd love to know the % of updates verses clean install.

i am planning on a clean install have done it since switching over to mac which was back when OS X Mountain Lion was released. it only takes 2-3 hours to restore everything from scratch. i already backed up my stuff on a exernal hard drive last night to get ready for the update :)

Hey Matt,

I want to do the same but it's the first time I'll do a clean install. Can you give me some clues how you proceed? I have a time-machine backup plus a clone of my disk.

Do you just copy back your home-user-data and install all programs and set them up a new or is there some faster way? What about time-machine etc. Will you start from scratch there too with a new one? What about the OS-settings etc...

Maybe you can give me some hints, 2-3 hours sounds like you know how to do it :)

what kind of speeds / cost in Lahore?

I have 2 internet connections right now.
The DSL broadband is 2 Mbps (Unlimited Data plan) and costs 16$/month.

The Mobile broadband (3G/4G) costs 20$/month for 100 GB monthly download limit.

Here ~22 Mbps means that I'm faster than 98% of whole Pakistan :D

I have never done a clean install. I would like to only because I am pedantic but just don't have the time with family and work. Well whatever. Almost time!!

basically i just download the OS update and use a bootable USB drive software that puts the OS on the drive to install. once installed i do the updates from the apple store and just install the software back that was on my computer. transfer my files, documents, music, photos from my external hard drive.

Fresh install for me. I take the yearly release cadence to refresh my mac, also gives me the opportunity to not install apps that I no longer use and this way no pesky orphan files are left behind :)

Hi Aneef wow that 3g/4g deal is good thats less than half what I pay for twice the amount of data in the UK. Reasonable speeds too. I find the Huawei B315 (UK) the best modem but different countries have different model numbers I get thr 1800 spectrum on 4g EE UK this modem made a _big difference_ to speed.

Somehow I imagine things will be slow no matter how good your connection is. Seems like the initial download when new software comes out from apple is always slow because their servers are being hammered.

Does anyone know how large the USB drive has to be for a clean install? I always used 8GB so far, but somewhere I read it's 16GB for El Capitan...

how to make USB drive to clean install? i think it uses Terminal last time i did it but i don't remember.

Thanks
