I ran a quick experiment to simulate traveling and wanting to use my Verizon line only over wifi, never over cellular radio. With previous single-SIM iPhones, this would only work as long as the SIM remained in the phone...after you swap the physical VZW SIM for a local operator's SIM, you can't swap the SIM back and enable wifi calling on the VZW line while in airplane mode, in part because the settings app would not let you get into cellular options while in airplane mode.

But, with the XS and 12.1.1, I can turn on airplane mode and still get into cellular settings, and there I can turn off or on the VZW line, remaining in airplane mode. Turning the line on in airplane mode while connected to WiFi, it will connect in VZW WiFi mode.

So the recipe seems to be this, to avoid any VZW international usage charges:
  • Enable WiFi calling on Verizon line before departing USA
  • Enable airplane mode before arrival outside USA
  • Turn off the VZW line in cellular options
  • Disable airplane mode; install nanoSIM for local provider, use as desired
  • When wanting to check something on the VZW line:
    • Enable airplane mode
    • Connect to WiFi
    • Enable VZW line in cellular options
    • send SMS messages, make VZW WiFi voice calls, etc. *
    • Disable VZW line in cellular options
    • Disable airplane mode (return to using local provider)
* Trying voice mail while in airplane mode/WiFi, I get "Visual Voicemail is currently unavailable". I can call voicemail (*86) and get the messages the old way.
It seems I have to connect over the air for the VZW line to get visual voicemail to re-enable.

I don’t have it handy now, but there is a Verizon FAQ page somewhere that states visual voicemail isn’t available over Wi-Fi.

I do see some comments and questions on the community forum that explain that...but it must be something about the initial configuration of it, because I am able to access visual voicemail once I've connected to cellular network and then put my phone in airplane mode with wifi calling enabled (VZW Wi-Fi showing in the status bar): I can call from another phone, decline the call, leave a message, and then get the push notice of the pending message and the transcription of it.

Interesting.

Why on my iphone does it show Pr for Primary instead of just P for Primary like in this picture?

Does anyone experience weaker cellular on eSIM for T-Mobile on today's iOS 12.1.2?

Primary using eSIM and Secondary using physical SIM in some areas.

I have my esim primary line on T-mobile. I have set up an xfinity mobile secondary line as a voice and text line. Am I assuming correctly that calls on Xfinity (verizon) will not be on Volte? If this is the case, has VZN turned off CDMA in some towers and therefore will I have any issues with being able to make calls?

It can look that way because one plan might lock onto Band 12 and show full signal strength while another plan will lock onto Band 4 and hold at a one-ball weak signal for an extended period.

However, as would happen when you were using only one plan, when you tried to use the weak signal, it will search again and latch onto the stronger signal if that is what is required.

Now...remember that you might have better data speeds on what appears to be the weaker signal, too.

Sometimes they don't own as much spectrum as they need for the fastest data, so you'll be on what looks like a weaker signal when it's really faster.

I don't know the full answer; however, when I was testing an Xfinity Mobile physical SIM yesterday, I was able to make calls and send and receive SMS with cellular data turned off.

Is there a way to set up a Siri Skill to easily switch between mobile data source? For example „hey siri. Use mobile data from Telekom“ „hey Siri. Use mobile data from Vodafone“ or something like that

Interesting. No postpaid. I think I've figured out TMO's strategy here, or at least my tin-foil theory. lol. Since one of TMO's big selling points is Simply Global (free, but slow roaming), they probably get a bunch of people who pay for faster speeds when traveling. But if they offered eSim to postpaid, they wouldn't need to do that.

So perhaps I'd switch back to TMO and just get on the $40 Simply prepaid plan. The new app also looks like it offers the same $70 T-Mobile One plan but pre-paid instead of post paid. I don't see the $50 T-Mobile One Prepaid Domestic Only plan though so unsure if TMO jacked up the price of the One prepaid domestic plan or if the $70 plan is exactly the same as the postpaid version. The app didn't have that info available.

All, having an issue with my eSIM set up.

AT&T primary line, physical SIM, used for data. Verizon eSIM line, work phone number only.

Data on LTE with Verizon lined turned "on" <1 Mbps per speedtest and inability to take a Google Meet meeting without lost packets. Turn "off" eSIM line, data magically returns to normal and no packet loss on Google Meet, can tether to my laptop, etc.

Have tried this in multiple locations and the only thing that fixes it is turning off the eSIM line.

Recent eSIM SW update didn't fix the issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Confused. You say you’re using AT&T for data, but that your Verizon line has data turned on. You can only have one for data.

AT&T is primary voice + data. Verizon is voice only, however, when the line is active, the AT&T data is super slow. Only disabling the eSIM line restores full speed.

Quick update.

Text Message Forwarding now suddenly working so am very happy. Working for both my lines with Dual Sim now woohoo. :)

I have T-Mobile as my primary service, I just got my att esim activated. How long did it take to activate physically on the phone? It’s still trying to load about half hour after esim card was scanned?
