Fellow educators having conferences at hotels or fellow educators having conferences on conferences at hotels?

Neither, actually, as it happens, but I'm laughing.

Not much of a fan of conferences, as most - and the academic ones were - mostly - uniquely underwhelming - were pretty grim. Academic males, in particular, a surprising number of whom were brutally bad public speakers, never knew when to shut up, or how to craft a speech.

No, these days, I am more often to be found in what is described as the real world, as I am an academic who sort of strayed into public service, although occasionally I will seek refuge in an Ivory Tower.

Well, in my new hotel (which was my old hotel), I have just had a late lunch with my colleague. Excellent mushroom soup, black bread (I might add that I really like black bread, as does my colleague), grapefruit juice, and mineral water (sparkling).

I ordered an espresso for afters.

My colleague had salad, black bread, mineral water, and ordered cappuccino.

We were both given the same thing: A cup of what was real coffee - genuine, and quite strong coffee - but it could be classed as neither espresso nor cappuccino. Never mind. Given that I hadn't had an espresso this morning, anything that resembled real coffee - and this is real coffee - is more than welcome.

On our return to our rooms, a bottle of Italian wine awaited each of us, along with a bowl of fresh fruit, and a note - in several languages - which simply said 'with our best compliments'.

This is a surprisingly subtle society, in some ways, something which is not always recognised or picked up on.

Outside, it is lashing rain - the beginning of autumn rains. The temperature - which was at 36-37C (96-97F) during the day when we arrived - falling to 33-34C (92-94F) in the evenings, has now tumbled to real September readings (16-18C which is 61-64F); I'd have it liked if it had lingered a little longer in the 20-30C range (68-86F) which is my personal favourite, but, no, on its descent, it raced through that in about a week.

Still, we might yet receive a belated blessing - a benign benediction of sorts - of something akin to an Indian summer.

And I had just the opposite occur. When I receive my last order from Atomic Cafe, they had sent me a double order. While this might seem like a bit of good fortune, the problem is that by the time I get to the second order the beans will be beginning to go stale.

A solution to this problem had been proffered to me by that brilliant young man, @SandboxGeneral. He suggested that it would be criminal to have to throw away an entire order of beans and that if I drank 6 cups of coffee a day instead of three the problem would be solved.

What can I say. As I had never thought of that brilliant solution I can only thank our dear friend, @SandboxGeneral, for his very thoughtful idea.

Unfortunately, in following his suggestion, I have not slept for the past three days.

Frankly @Shrink I'm quite surprised that you didn't consider doubling your daily consumption with the extra beans yourself. Clearly coffee is a priority in your life, and even above your life is it not? So what's a little lost sleep anyway? o_O

In my case, coffee plays second fiddle to something more important in my life and that is my two wonderful cats! They're quite the team now too in the mornings. Cassini has busted in my door, like he was the police, and Puma sits on my chest meowing in my face until I get up and produce them their 6 am cat treats. Only then can I be allowed to produce some coffee for myself.

Cats clearly have an internal clock, and a very accurate one, if I am any judge of such matters. And, is it not a cheering experience to be greeted so affectionately and warmly first thing in the morning?

Later this afternoon, we managed another coffee; this time, the cappuccino sort of resembled a cappuccino - you should have seen the cappuccino that was served to my colleague when we showed up in that hotel two days ago to discuss a few things - a veritable work of art, - but my espresso, was again, a strong cup of something resembling espresso. Perhaps it was a double espresso, served in a normal cup. Well, no complaints, it was lovely.

With it, we both had some sparkling water.

A point well taken.

Clearly, at this point my ability to reason is impaired by old age, and I have to depend on you young whippersnappers here on The Thread to pick up the slack for me.:(

New coffee is due to arrive Tuesday or Wednesday. Lovely. I've just ordered some Honeybush and Rooibus by the pound. Lovely. Also have some lamb marinating in the fridge for tomorrow's roast. Lovely.

Beautiful start to the week. Which I'm sure will be mucked by an employee's mistake or a whinging client. As happens anytime I have a wonderful start to the week.

There's nothing more annoying than listening to mumblers. I've had educators who were mumblers. By end of term, you would have become a professional and transcribing their waffling. stumblers and stutterers send my blood pressure soaring. It's rather infuriating.

The weekly espresso center cleaning ritual has been completed. As I was finishing off the VST basket and the portafilter handle I wondered to myself how far others take to their cleaning procedures.

After I've soaked them in a vat of almost boiling hot water mixed with Cafiza for about 10 minutes I take to casually drying them off and then grab a cotton swab and start cleaning out any remaining debris and oils stuck down deep in the spout holes. I suppose that's a carry over from my Marine Corps days of using cotton swabs to get our weapons clean and inspection ready.

Does anyone else take their cleaning this far, or even farther?

I use a steamer on our oven. Does that count?
Meanwhile I had three Expresso's today. Does that qualify me for being a coffee lover?

Actually I believe I take cleaning my simple French press, scale, and teapot a bit further.

First, I must be clean before cleaning the equipment, so I scrub...

Then, I feel that it is very important to maintain cleanliness...

Finally, I autoclave all of my equipment...

I might just possibly be going a bit far, but the obviously sloppy habits of @SandboxGeneral are really not to be tolerated.

We talked about this the other week, but I use cheap vodka to clean anything out after a wipe down. I've heard of people using steam wands on anything they can take out of the grinder and espresso machine. That would also work.

Opinions on Lavazza beans.

A long, long time ago I tried both Lavazza and Illy beans. Putting aside the crucial question go when they were roasted, I found the Lavazza blend and roast to be somewhat bland, and preferred the Illy blend and roast.

But the real issue is the question of when they were roasted and if they are stale. I would always go for freshly roasted beans, if one's situation allows for it. If not, I would check out the Illy beans.

Opinions on Lavazza beans.

Abroad, in some of the strange countries in which I (and you) work, they are gold dust, nectar, sublime, and exceedingly welcome. Sometimes, I have been known to whimper with sounds of pure inarticulate happiness when I see their over-priced little selves on the shelves of a small, specialist store in say, a PX, or a side street in a battered and ancient capital city.

This is because conditions can be challenging in such places, and many of these societies have little to no tradition of making good coffee - in other words, beggars can't be choosers and we are - or, I am - damned glad to be able to lay hands on anything that resembles - and offers the chance of obtaining - decent coffee.

I'm with @Shrink; given a choice, I would usually opt for Illy beans.

However, at home, my standards can be more demanding, or a lot more exacting, and I am in a position to seek them out, so I tend to order my coffee beans from small, specialist roasters, where the roasting will have been done very recently, and the beans themselves may well have come from some small, high quality, possibly organic, farm in - say - the Ethiopian Highlands.

Opinions on Lavazza beans.
When I got my first espresso machine in the mid 90's, a Krups made thing, I started off with a tin of Lavazza beans as they came free with the machine. I remember being disappointed in the insipidness of the taste and flavour profile of those beans, quickly making the move to purchasing from a local importer/roaster instead.

I seriously recommend you find a local importer/roaster, where you will get beautiful fresh beans every time. It's well worth the few extra dollars to know that what you are drinking is fair trade coffee too! Well, it is to me...

I thought I was anal about the cleaning of my machine, but my monthly descaling and weekly portafilter and grinder cleaning looks pathetic now! I suppose if I had an espresso machine of your calibre, weekly cleaning to this magnitude might be in order.

I feel like I'm turning into Shrink. Just started the day with an expesso. Hopefully it will keep me awake until tonight as I didn't get much sleep as it was very warm last night.

Might need a few more throughout the day. Big bottle of water and sausage sandwich probably help to!

You see?

Big bottle of water - sausage (or, is that salami? what we describe as salami, continentals will sometimes refer to as 'sausage') sandwich, and an espresso. We'll tempt you over to the dark side, yet.

How do you find the espresso? When I started drinking them, my brother claimed that he thought I was trying to channel my inner Italian.......er, mafioso. The little cups in Italian cafés were so cool that - initially - he thought it was a pose, rather than a desire for espresso......

For all we know, you may very well be a genius crime ring lord that controls most of the United Kingdom, and that your cover is being an educator. What crimes you engage in are yet to be determined. Possibly price fixing coffee beans?

On the issue of Lavazza. I'm going to side with Sceptical on this. If pressed for store bought, it depends on when they were roasted. Illy is a small company in Italy (not small but you get the general idea) and produce better quality products. I'd put both companies a notch below to-order roasters, but I'd place Lavazza a notch below Illy. Lavazza is still better than most store bought coffee. Coincidentally, McDonald's brand ground Colombian has a very high rating of 85-90 pts. on coffee review sites.

I've never tried it but I'm tempted to big up a bag just to see how it is if I ever see it. Though I reckon that McDonald's has a third party roaster of the 2nd wave variety if not blending with 3rd wave. Worst case, it'll go straight into the compost bin.

Damn.

After all this time, my carefully cultivated cover of a slightly distracted former teacher of history (and maybe, politics) is well and truly blown.

Of these two, yes, I'd recommend Illy.

However, not all of LavAzza's offerings are equally uninspiring; they, too, have gourmet versions of their coffee, sometimes to be had in tins.......

It was nice. In fact I had another couple later in the day. But now I'm back home I have a hankering for tea!

The first little cup of coffee I had was in Ethiopia, when a cup was first served me, I thought I was being cheated, then I had my first delightful sip, yum!

Ah, yes, that unforgettable 'yum' moment of a first sip of really good Ethiopian coffee.

Oh, and @JamesMike - you had asked about teas: The Greenfield Company makes some excellent black tea (the Golden Ceylon) and some very good green tea.
