Today, I managed to make two offerings of the Itzamna Guatamala (single estate origin, 'clean', bright, etc. etc.) coffee in my French press; yesterday's filter (single cup) version taught a valuable and well heeded lesson that it needed to be made slightly stronger.

So, two lovely pots of coffee, served at an outdoor table while savouring some early spring sunshine….along with chocolate and apricot biscuits and good companions. What is there not to like?

Sounds like a wonderful setting to enjoy good coffee in. What size is the FP you're using?

Sounds like a wonderful setting to enjoy good coffee in. What size is the FP you're using?

Having just examined it, it seems to be the 1 litre, (34 fl. oz), i.e. six 'standard' cups (which also means, in practice, three rather large mugs).

It is made by Bialetti, is quite rugged, (which is why I bought it) and has a stainless steel bottom; yes, it was very nice to be able to use it today, sitting outside, and sipping, and chatting…..

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I wish him the best and hope the chemo does it's job.

I arrived home from work this afternoon to find FedEx left a sticker on my door that a package was awaiting me to pick it up from the apartment managers office. I walked over there, knocked on the door and he let me into the office across the hall and handed me the most exquisitely smelling white FedEx bag.

Now normally, FedEx, or any other delivery companies bags, don't smell this good. This is even better than those scratch-n-sniff stickers, and without the scratching part!

Walking back to my apartment across the courtyard, I enjoyed the senses of just holding a bag of beans in my hand. Perhaps it's the smell, the anticipation or both that just enhances the packaged beans feeling that I like so much. It's almost like opening a gift on Christmas morning as a child.

Anyway, upon opening the package I found a nice bag of beans from the Blue Bottle Coffee Company of the Three Africans variety, compliments of our good friend Kurwenal.

I look forward to trying this out in the new French Press here in a little while and especially in the morning as one of my first duties in preparing to go to the office for work.

A big, heartfelt, thank you Mr. Kurwenal. Your generosity and kindness is greatly appreciated. :)

Three Africans
Three Africans is a stout-bodied and multi-faceted drip coffee blend. Berry notes pop and sparkle, while a lower-toned Ugandan oversees like a dutiful parent.

This coffee is generally a blend of Ugandan and two different Ethiopian coffees, which produce a big, chocolaty aroma. It excels in either the French press or the moka pot. Unlike some of our fancy-shmancy single origins, which tend to be nichey and polarizing, this blend has a very easy-to-like personality, good body, unthreatening complexity, and reasonably clean aftertaste. The Ethiopians – a Yirgacheffe and dry-processed Sidamo – leave subtle imprints of dried blueberries and cardamom, and clean up the slightly raisiny aftertaste of the Ugandan. A fairly dark roast, this inclusive blend will take milk or cream quite well. Some say damn well.*

*None of that slight coyote poop finish here! ;)

Excellent, excellent! Mr. Kurwenal is indeed quite a generous bloke (err, sometimes I slip into the British vernacular...). It has been a while since I've had that blend (SM's has dominated my coffee life lately), but I do recall being quite tasty. Hope you enjoy, and do report back. :cool:

Oh it was very tasty indeed! I think I hit the sweet spot of dosage and timing on the first cup out of the FP too.

Gear pre-heating is certainly essential to a hot, long-lasting cup too. Of course, we all know this, but it's always worth mentioning.

It was silky-smooth from the first sip to the last. There was a sweet smelling aroma and rich, not to be confused with strong, taste with some of those fruity adjectives used often to describe cupping. With using the Bodum cups, and being clear, it allows you to see the coffee and this cup was a beautiful golden brown color and poured in light and by the time the cup was full it darkened very nicely.

This is a most excellent blend and the FP works perfectly with it. I'm ready to make a second cup now!

Glad you are enjoying the coffee. I felt bad, earlier, when I realized you were fixated on the FP and that small can stuff we all tried was not really suitable for FP (at least in my view). This stuff certainly is....

Sorry, I blew right past this.

How is the roasting going? Sounds like you are hooked......

It is going quite well actually. It seems the sweet spot for my popper is about ~75g at a time. With this amount FC happens around 4 min, and I get a nice medium roast for pour over between 6-7 min (currently roasting the El Salvador Finca Siberia Bourbon). I only have to toss out maybe a dozen under roasted beans per batch. It is, as always, a continuous learning experience, and I'm getting a bit better each time. But at this point I'm pretty much set on graduating to a 'real' roaster. Though that's a few years off, I expect. :p

To be fair, you sent us all the tins before I had the thought of buying a FP. That coffee tasted fine in the FP, but like you said, this stuff is really good in it.

It is very good coffee. I have been working my way through the BB catalog, for my "commercial beans" slot, and added Three Africans to my "hey this is really good" list. It has incredible body, almost chewy, in addition to the flavor. I have been meaning to try it in the moka pot but haven't done so yet.

That's great. Can I ask, are you using a Hario?

For the drip? I have two cones that I switch between, one is a glass Hario with a very wide hole on the bottom. I use the Hario full cone (not sure what else to call them) filters for that one. Fold the seam down, wet with hot water (which also serves to heat the vessel), then grind and brew. The second I own is a ceramic cone with a truncated bottom and a small drip hole. If I use the Hario filters in this, I have to fold the bottom of the filter to flatten it (although I've seen flat bottom filters around). This one brews a much bolder cup, largely because the water stays in contact with the grounds for much longer. Both are great for their own purposes...:D

As for the "years off," we'll see.....

Hmmm, interesting. But if there's one thing I've learned, it is that there is never a short supply of crazies willing to forego the 'convenience factor' even if it is as good. If nothing more than for the genuine pleasure of the process and the satisfaction of creating something yourself.

And, incidentally, we happen to keep Shrinkie in business too. Hmmm, maybe it's a plot. ... ... ...;)

This is what I am finding out with the FP. It's slightly more work, but much more satisfying for the process of creation.
