Very occasionally, an airline produces a passable espresso.

In a coffee shop.
Turkish Airlines - in Business Class - occasionally, very, very occasionally have been in a position to serve espresso; or, failing that, Nespresso of Turkish coffee (which is not bad at all) instead

By the way, Kurwenal, which airline is that? And I doubt very much that an espresso is served so nicely in economy class where the service can be very poor indeed.

SAS ?

Only airline I have flown with that had espresso machines.

I'm sure there are more.

-t

There are a few, but not many. Singapore Airlines makes, by far, the best espresso in the air. It is the only airline I have ever seen with a grinder on board.

Ethad, Cathay Pacific and Emirates all have espresso available in business or first class. Quality is, of course, hit and miss, and sometimes the flight attendants say no, I think, just because they don't want to mess with it. British Airways first class used to offer espresso but seems to have stopped some time over the past few years. And, Scepticalscribe has mentioned Turkish Airlines in the past, and below. I have never flown that airline but, by reputation, it takes food and drink much more seriously than do most airlines, including having a chef on board in a starched white jacket.

For US-based carriers, American and US Airways offer it on a very few flights (only those flying the A330-300). This particular example was US Airways, on a flight to Madrid, where Mrs. Kurwenal and I are spending a few days (she is originally from Spain).

All of this available, of course, only on long-haul international flights, I believe. I have never seen a domestic flight with even so much as a Nespresso on board.

But no crema?;)

I was going to ask the same thing!

No crema!?

Well....there was a tiny bit, hard to see in the shadows of the picture. But the taste was ok, 3 out of 10 (which on a flight is a huge win). It was better than the offered "drip" coffee.

By the way, Kurwenal, which airline is that? And I doubt very much that an espresso is served so nicely in economy class where the service can be very poor indeed.

US Airways. Yes, espresso is not available in economy.

Ok, it really isn't cool that you should show me this.

Not cool at all.

Really...

I have to restrain myself.

This coffee was much better. Out with my father-in-law in Madrid this morning. At a proper stand up bar and everything.

You see, the coffee culture of Europe is one of the crowning glories of the truly civilised way of life in large parts of the continent……and the stand up coffee bars of Spain are legendary…..as are those of Italy, the Balkans…….

Abstract and Introduction

Abstract

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Several studies consistently show that coffee drinkers with chronic liver disease have a reduced risk of cirrhosis and a lower incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma regardless of primary etiology. With the increasing prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) worldwide, there is renewed interest in the effect of coffee intake on NAFLD severity and positive clinical outcomes. This review gives an overview of growing epidemiological and clinical evidence which indicate that coffee consumption reduces severity of NAFLD. These studies vary in methodology, and potential confounding factors have not always been completely excluded. However, it does appear that coffee, and particular components other than caffeine, reduce NAFLD prevalence and inflammation of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis. Several possible mechanisms underlying coffee's hepatoprotective effects in NAFLD include antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antifibrotic effects, while a chemopreventive effect against hepatocarcinogenesis seems likely. The so-far limited data supporting such effects will be discussed, and the need for further study is highlighted.

Introduction

Coffee is a brewed beverage with a distinct aroma and flavor, prepared from the roasted seeds of the coffee plant. It has been part of the human diet since the 15th century. In its various forms (including decaffeinated coffee), coffee is one of the most consumed drinks in the world, partly for its mild mood-enhancing and stimulatory effects on the central nervous system. Caffeine, one of the main constituents of coffee, has been shown to have a wide spectrum of biological activities. The effects of coffee on chronic liver disease, especially in lowering the risk of developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has recently attracted considerable attention.

Very true. But my problem is not drinking too much coffee.....it's taking too many pictures (and taking a few notes) of nearly every cup I drink. In the last day or two:

It is for me...when you work fee-for-service there is no such thing as vacation...or sick days...or personal days....or any paid time off.

Good choice on my part...no!?:p

Yeah, but surely all those Londinium God Shots you drink distort time as to feel like months of bliss each morning!:D

Ah, the symbols of a charming visit to a civilised land; lovely photographs. I am impressed, ad envious; ah, may you enjoy your visit, your espressos, your wine, sampling the civilised joys of life in such elegant surroundings.

Personally, in that selection of pictures, the first espresso cup meets with my approval - it is a little similar to my own porcelain d'Ancap (Italian) ones (which I bought from my favourite espresso bar when the latter became a much-lamented - by me - and unfortunate casualty of the recession three years ago - I still sniff a sob occasionally just thinking about it).

And I must say that the picture of the rather impressive wine bottle of Rioja Riserva is most……ah, alluring.

Vacation? What's that? :(

Well, as a European, all I can say is that some aspects of the work/life balance strike me as perhaps requiring a little bit of adjustment, Across The Pond…..not least in attitudes to such things…..

Yeah, but surely all those Londinium God Shots you drink distort time as to feel like months of bliss each morning!:D

Yes, the very same thought crossed my mind, too.

Well, not quite months, but that morning espresso is a few moments of bliss for sure!:D

Agreed. My French Press has been busy today, too…...

Indeed, a wonderful trip. Many reunions (and some new introductions) with my wife's family, almost universally good coffee, a bit of sightseeing, and three operas.

And, speaking of opera, last night, after a very good Lohengrin at the Teatro Real, we stopped in nearby for some drinks. I spied a genuine, working absinthe fountain.....which I thought might be of interest.

Really cool! Why is it shooting a solid stream though? My limited experience suggests that in preparing absinthe the water is dripped slowly over the sugar cube into the cup of absinthe.

And opera, sightseeing and absinthe, too? Not just Rioja Riserva and seriously good espresso served properly? Not to mention, good family and friends? Ah, this is all far too much for me…….what a wonderful holiday, sprinkled with glittering bits of sheer exquisite perfection…..
