Under a rock.
I love the simplicity of your setup.

I'll echo that. It's a very attractive, very mac-like setup.

Unlike mine, which has install-restore CDs, pro tools CDs, blank CDs, wacom drivers, picks, cables, capos, paper, and hard drives all over it.

When I get the money I think I'll get one of those huge Dell rotating displays.

Just moved into my dorm,I just bought the keyboard and mouse this morning (from the campus bookstore)

I'm still setting up, I need a longer Ethernet Cable (since my dorm doesn't have wifi for some reason!)

(my first post here btw)

Congrats on your first post.

Are you a freshman?

My college doesn't have wifi either so I just brought an Airport Express from home and used it to enable wifi in my room.

Do you have a roommate?

My experiences with colleges/WiFi (that being UCSD only) is that it pretty much sucks a LOT. It's very very slow. So I usually use ethernet whenever possible. Also many colleges do not allow you to set up your own wireless systems on their network due to security issues. However this is only my experience and you should check with your school's IT department before investing in a router.

BTW I'm a freshman this year at USF. I move in in ~two weeks. :D Can't wait, I'll post pics of my setup once I move in as well.

I agree.

IMO, it depends on the university and their policies.

From my own experiences these past 2 years, what colleges say they do vs. what they actually enforce are two different entities.

I know tons of my friends who have routers and I have heard IT saying that if they found out we had a router something would happen.

Although, nothing has happened on my particular campus...it could on yours.

Completely off topic BUT I can't wait to move in the dorms this year. Not only will I have a new iMac to accompany my Macbook...but I also took a plunge and bought a 40" Sammy.

Thank god for making the Dean's list every semester or my mom would not have bit the bullet on that idea.

well for with the problem with routers in college dorms you can disable SSD broadcasting so no one can see your network, then you can just type in your ssd when you set up your airport on your mac. Then if the IT department comes busting through your door looking for a router just hide it or something ;). On another note if you got an airport express you can hook it up to some speakers and use your new ipod touch you got with your purchase to play music through it

Agreed. My brother's school allows the students to set up their own servers and all sorts of stuff that pretty much every other college would never allow So it pretty much depends on the school. And Congrats on the 40".

As long as we're on the subject, I'm debating bringing my 24" display. What are your experiences with space in a dorm room? I don't want it to take over my entire desk . I'm going into the pretty standard residence hall style dorm with one room mate.

EDIT:

We're not supposed to have wireless here either, but I also got a letter in the mail that said we could as long as it was set up and secured by the IT department. They just don't want outside people getting on and slowing it down. I just disable ssid broadcast and use wpa.

The internet in all the residences is slow as **** anyway. In any of the labs it is fine, but in the apartment I would say it's worse than dial up.

I'm a computer science major and the instructor that I have for most of my comp classes doesn't think to highly of the IT department. From what I got out of him the network wasn't set up right from the beginning and they really don't know what the problem is. And of course they don't want to spend money to fix it.

I'm sure they could find it anyway, but it's really not worth their time.

Do you mean like webserver? I was thinking just a simple fileserver which they can't really stop.

I'd do it if I was you.

I have had a good experience with space in a dorm room because I have a private room and do not have to worry about a roommate messing up my flow because I am OCD and a neat freak.

Plus, if you sort things out in a good way...you can actually find that you have more space than you think you do.

Do you use both of the monitors for the mac mini? Also you couldn't by any chance give me the model name of your camera? I'm looking for something like it for skype, ichat etc.

The Dell Monitor is used for an old Windows XP machine. The model of the camera is a Panasonic PV-DV203D. Got one year on black friday for around $100.

It's a Macbook. You can tell by the standby light on the right hand side instead of it being in the centre.
