Well, when I put the iATKOS DVD in the drive and boot from it, it reboots before it gets to the grey Apple screen and doesn't work. I can't figure out why.

That generally happens because you're using an IDE dvd drive.

You need to connect it to a IDE to USB adapter and hook it up through USB, or get a SATA dvd drive.

There are some other reasons, but that's the first one to rule out.

Occasionally

I want to learn how to program and my PB takes a long time to compile stuff
There's little benefit from a Pro here.
PB VS MB

GMA 950 < ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
Debatable
15" > 13" (this is very important to me. just look at my signature. the screen sucks on both really.)
Use an external for work.
Mini DVI < Dual Link DVI (which my PB has)
If you can't afford a Pro, how are you getting a 30" monitor?
Glossy < Matte (Glossy in car = big picture of the sun on your screen)

Core Duo > G4
definitely
MacBook Pro fixes all the negatives of the MacBook over the PB.

I need more ram than a Core Duo MB can handle 2 GB is not enough. I know this from experience because I run out all the time on my PB. I have less than 256 MB RAM free with my normal workload open. If I add Photoshop of iMovie to the mix I run out quick.
IMO the Pro is not worth it. If you're buying used, maybe, but I realize now that spending almost 2k on a laptop was the worst investment I've ever made. At the time it seemed like the way to go. I wanted a single machine so I didn't have to keep things synced, but I wanted a laptop.

Now I realize that I could have a Quad Core machine to do all my grunt work and a MB for everything else and probably spend less. I'll be happy if I can get out from under my MBP and come out with enough for a uniMB. Then I still have to come up with the cash for an i7 rig.:D

Do what you think is best for you, that's just my experience.;)

I tried externals with the iBook and they did not work great. I hated using the 1024*768 screen while at school or away from home or when I wanted out of the 90-100º room during the summer.

I can barely work on my 1280*854 PB and need an upgrade (meaning higher resolution!) And an external costs more money and I would probably have a better chance of getting a $1300 computer than a $1000 computer + $500 24 inch monitor. Plus an external stays at home while a laptop screen goes with you.

All I am saying is a MacBook would be a downgrade from my PB in many ways.

My PowerBook cannot even stay plugged in by itself. It manages to unplug itself!

The prices will come down on 30" too and I like to use my old laptop as a desktop so in 2 years when 30" are $500-600 I will be forced to use the PB if I get a MB.

When I bought my PB I thought I was getting a 1440*900 screen

I hate video adapters!

No comment about the matte screen!

I am using the backlit KB to type this post!

How many times is this power adapter going to fall out! Three times during this post so far

I will loose:

my PC card slot.

FW 800

metal case

the good speakers my PB has

100 GB 5400 RPM HD

15 inch screen

Backlit KB

I will gain

3 video adapters instead of one (VGA)

A power port that will actually stay connected with the cord

Smaller size (Which is bad to me I tried small with my iBook and did not like the low resolution screen that came with small size)

A power port that works

a 60 - 80 GB 4200 RPM HD

DDR 2 (but only 2 GB)

A power port that will stay connected

I can see your face glowing green from here. You shouldn't open a thread like this with opinions like that.

Sorry, but I am VERY strongly opinionated when it comes to youth and technology.

If he wants all that stuff for the sake of having it then sure.
But if he has his heart set on doing blockbuster movies, creating songs and whatnot then sure, it's a reasonable idea to have all that at a young age so he gets a head start.

As for me, I'm 14 and know very well what I want in life, And so far all I have is a BlackBook with 3gb ram, 250gb HD and a 500gb External, So seeing people with stuff like that at that age is just un-fathomable.

Like I said, do whatever is best for you. I just like to share my experiences to help people make the best choice they can and avoid costly mistakes.
If your looking at used machines then it might be a better deal. Even new last gen MBP's if there's any left, can't beat 1400 bucks for a brand new one.

I agree the resolution is nice, but now that I've been taking mine to class everyday I almost want to get a netbook just so I can actually use a book on my desk at the same time. :p

I hope your right about the 30's coming down, but I doubt it. The reason 20-24's have come down so much is because most of them are TN panels. They could come down some if more of them hit the market. Right now they're too much of a niche product.

Dude...you're two years older then him.

I am surprised to hear that your quite opinionated against "youth and technology". You haven't even grown pubes yet, your still in the "youth" category yourself.

OMG! Unfathomable!

So to be allowed (or for it to be "acceptable" for him to have all this stuff) he needs to be doing high-end AV editing? ****. Is that's what he's doing then his stuff is underpowered.

And you, why do you need 3gbs of RAM and 750GB of HDD space? You probably browse the net, listen to music, chat and watch movies. You could have gotten a windows machine for a LOT less if that's all your doing.

haha. ;)

Seriously, grow up and get over it. Who cares if some 7 year old is rocking a mac Pro or whatever. Quit dragging the entire forum down with your jealousy and hate. If you have some huge moral issue with children and computers, this really isn't the place for you. Take your whine somewhere else.

It's sad how everytime an early teen posts a nice setup this thread turns into a junior high soap opera. Everyone needs to do their part to keep the thread friendly and clean.

Or I'll turn this car around, mister.

@NoobMac

You're 12 years old.
Isn't there an age limit on this website?
and why do you have a ps3, a laptop, an iMac and what appears to be a Hackintosh?
Are you sure it's not your dad's stuff; AND you have an iPhone.

You must be one extremely spoilt kid, or a kid claiming things that aren't his.

Shouldn't you be outside playing or something.

Dude, why? WHY?

Jealousy isn't going to get you anywhere. Why does it even matter how old someone is to have equipment like that? Bloody hell, if he enjoys it.. then let the good times roll.

I am fourteen, I also have lots of technology in my room, it isn't that I am spoilt, it is because I have a passion for technology and my parents are interested in what I could develop with all the knowledge that I have gained from my childhood growing up with computers. I have been playing with computers ever since I was 6 years old. My parents believe with bringing me up with computer in my blood that I could possibly get a good career involving computers.

Before you hit me with some smart ass comment back, think twice before you post.

<continuing the needless backfire against "too much" technology>

When I was younger, people asked me why I had two computers in my room. Well now, in college, I have the highest paid [student] job in the city. That's why.

Embrace technology if that's what your mind fancies.

What do you need that much power for? I know my iBook, with it's lowly 1.3 Ghz G4 is more then enough for what I do.

Yes, but it can't play HD video, doesnt have an iSight (and it couldn't handle PhotoBooth if it did) It's unlikely to have bluetooth, and may not even have Airport, and my eMac of a similar spec struggled with even iMovie 04, even with Panther, liking tech from a couple of years ago is fine, but prefering it to its latest evolution and from what ive read in your other posts, pretty much hating all, neat, new technology is ridiculous.

End of Rant......

or is it??

That's really nice man, you've basically done exactly what I want to do :p But I can't because of the odd shape of my room. :(

MOD NOTE!

Please stop the side discussion about what is too much or whatever. Enjoy the setups and be happy. It would be a shame if the ban hamster would have to come out of his cage because of something as useless as this...
