Ok so I just asked along the lines of this. So does activating it on a Mac start a ton of resource using background daemons that run all the time?

No. One process is started called `generativeexperiencesd`, and is consuming 11.5MB of RAM while sitting idle on my machine.

Really a non-concern. By comparison, Safari with only MacRumors open is consuming OVER 1GB of RAM. You don't have to worry.

Siri is...well, mostly unchanged. It can't look up dogs in my photo library when told to do so, instead showing me dogs on the Internet...using Bing, a search engine I would never use.

I did have Siri read me a page from MR, and it almost sounded human, very few mistakes, and the voice was terrific.

But...

Clean Up is garbage. It can't remove a flag in front of a chimney while keeping the horizontal lines straight on the chimney...as those lines exist above and below the flag, all it had to do was copy them. Couldn't even do that, the lines are at weird angles and broken.

Clean Up can't remove something as simple as power lines. When I circle them, it removed a few of the power lines in some spots, but never the whole thing, and it merely fades the power lines above and below a little.

What an embarrassing piece of sh**. Steve fired MobileMe guys for less.

Your assessment seems flawed. How long have you had Apple Intelligence activated? It can take time for your photo library to be fully processed, objects recognized, and a catalog built. It will likely improve over time.

As for Clean Up, show us some example. For Clean Up to work, it needs to clearly identify an "object". Power lines don't strike me as an object that it has been trained on. And being an intelligence feature, it will only get better over time as people use it. It's not a "static" technology that will always be lousy at everything. That's the very nature of this new technology... it's designed to learn and improve over time, much like any intelligent being.

So, patience grasshopper.

Hmmm. When highlighting a word in email the selection bar (to select copy, select all, etc) appears at the top of the screen but almost completely off the screen. The options are unreadable and unselectable.

I think the term waitlist was poorly chosen. I was on the waitlist for no more than 1 hour. My guess is that after you complete the update, some activity has to take place on Apple's end before AI can be turned on. All of my devices now have it working.

It’s just an extra layer of user opt-in so the EU doesn’t throw a tantrum. ;)

Seriously though it probably initiates some back end device prep. Installing ios and macOS updates loads the framework, and the waitlist runs config.

After testing it out a bit on my Mac, I’m surprised at the UI quality. It feels very anti Apple to have a key feature in a right click menu.

That's not how RAM works. Apple Intelligence may require upwards of 8GB while in active use, but is not using 8GB while sitting idle. That would be insane and unacceptable.

if you never invoke any Apple Intelligence features, even when the feature is enabled, it won't be consuming RAM unnecessarily.

RAM is not the same as data storage.

FIY I'm a programmer, I know how RAM works.

What we don't know is how AI is implemented in macOS. We can't assume anything about its memory usage until someone actually tests it.

But I doubt Apple would implement their AI in such a way that it would try and load gigabytes of LLM every time a user tries to use it. Even with a fast SSD it would take a few seconds and ruin the AI experience that Apple is probably aiming for.

There's also people in some work fields, where security and confidentiality are requirements, that may not be able to use Macs in the future if AI cannot be disabled.

You mean that the desperate act of allowing a (data collecting) 3rd party to process requests, does not fit into a privacy focused eco system??

But if its processed on-device, on a massive 8GB RAM macbook pro, or on the magic Private Compute Cloud, there should be no worries :)

Siri is as dumb as ever. It may have context now, but understanding is still extremely limited.
Completely unable to do simple multi-step instructions. "Extract home address from the last email I received about the BMW M60, then show directions to this address in google maps". "Failed to find email with 'extract address'". Wow.

New try (it has context, so can do multiple steps). "Find email received about BMW m60" - Shows a list. "Take first email and extract the home address at the bottom". "Who do you want to message to"? Really? That amount of dialog comprehension in times of ChatGPT 4o and similarly capable models is simply embarrassing. I even typed the messages to make sure it's not about my English accent.

I also don't understand, why translation is such a thing for Apple. One of the big strengths of LLMs are exactly translating text. But probably they need to use really small models to execute them on-device and these are probably not trained on multi-lingual content. If this is the case, then it will be interesting to see what happens for the bulk of people that often use multiple languages - I use German in private messages, mostly English in business context and some French and Spanish with customers or international friends. Even if several language models are available to use for each of them, it will still not be able to consider my full context. For that a multi-lingual model is needed.

We will see, but until now I'm rather underwhelmed. At least it works for Switzerland when setting both Siri and Device language to English (US).

So I bought an iPhone 16 pro last week.
I cant use this AI as I live in europe, WTF.
Should have stayed with my iPhone 14 pro.

Maybe my outlook on this will change tomorrow after a good night’s sleep, but I have been waitlisted for Apple Intelligence for the past 12 hours. How long does this last….1 day, 1 week, 1 month? I am very disappointed.

Aside from a better camera with more camera features, why did I update from a 14 Pro Max? Apple said Intelligence would be rolling out in iOS updates…they never said that some of us would be binned and not allowed access until some unknown point in time.

Don't you just love how Apple's AI does everything Google has done on android phones since 2012, like contextual susbsequent searches, and that "for complex requests" it'll just ask ChatGPT ?

It's like AI is so AI it uses AI.

Coming April's Fools in a country near you.

Someone needs to explain to me why everything Apple Intelligence is tied to language. Why is the image related stuff like Visual Intelligence held back for non English speaking countries? Denmark is not part of the planned April 2025 release. Basically we will not see any of these features that the iPhone 16 was heavily marketed for before the iPhone 17 is out. Come on Apple this is just getting ridiculous…

Apple Intelligence is what Apple is calling its artificial intelligence feature set, previewed at WWDC in June 2024. The first Apple Intelligence features launched with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, but this is only an initial taste of what Apple has planned.

There are a selection of Apple Intelligence features that are available now, along with additional capabilities that will be rolling out across the rest of 2024 and 2025.

Apple Intelligence Features Available Now

Writing Tools

ios-18-1-writing-tools.jpg

  • Proofread text checks for spelling and grammar errors, including word choice and sentence structure. You can accept all suggestions with a tap or go through them one by one with explanations.
  • Rewrite cleans up what you've written and shifts the tone without impacting your content. Options include Friendly, Professional, and Concise.
  • You can select text and get a summary of it with Apple Intelligence. You can choose to create a paragraph, pull out key points, make a list, or create a table. Summaries are available in Mail, Messages, and more.
You can select any text on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and use Apple Intelligence to access Writing Tools for summaries and other features.

Siri

ios-18-1-siri.jpg

  • There's a new glow around the edges of the display when Siri is activated, applicable to iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay. On Mac, the Siri window can be placed anywhere. The glow animates responsively to the sound of your voice so you can tell when Siri is listening without interrupting other things you're doing.
  • A double tap at the bottom of the display brings up the Type to Siri interface so you can type requests instead of speaking them. On Mac, you need to press the Command key twice to bring up Type to Siri. Type to Siri includes suggested requests so you can get your questions answered faster.
  • Siri can maintain context between requests so you can ask a question and then reference it in a second reply. If you ask about the temperature in Raleigh, for example, and then follow up with "what's the humidity?" Siri should know you mean in Raleigh.
  • If you stumble over your words when speaking to Siri, or change what you're saying mid-sentence, Siri will follow along.
  • Siri has Apple's product knowledge and support base for answering questions about your device's features and settings, and can even find settings when you don't know the exact name by using natural language search.
Mail

ios-18-1-smart-replies.jpg

  • There is a summarize button for summarizing any of your incoming emails, plus you will see a brief summary of an email in your inbox list rather than the first few lines of the email.
  • Mail surfaces time sensitive messages first when applicable, putting them at the top of your inbox so you see what's important right away.
  • Smart Reply provides quick-tap responses to emails that you've been sent, with contextual options based on what's in the email.
  • Multiple notifications from Mail will be summarized on your Lock Screen so you can see what's in an email without opening the app.
Messages

ios-18-1-messages-smart-reply.jpg

  • Messages has Smart Reply options for incoming texts, which analyze the content of messages to offer suggestions of what you might want to say.
  • Multiple Messages notifications are summarized on your Lock Screen.
  • You can use all of the Writing Tools features in the Messages app for proofreading and refining what you're planning to send.
Photos

ios-18-1-memory-maker.jpg

  • You can create a Memory Movie with just a description, such as "My cat in 2024," or "Orlando in the summer." The feature automatically picks relevant photos and chooses songs, but you can tweak through the Memory Mixes feature or choose a mood to guide the direction of the audio. You can also add in specific scenes and images you want to see throughout the memory when you're creating the prompt.
  • Natural language search is available in Photos, so you can just describe what you're looking for, such as "Eric rollerskating while wearing green."
  • Search can also find specific moments in video clips.
  • Search offers up smart complete suggestions for narrowing down what you might want to find.
Clean Up
The Photos app also includes "Clean Up," a feature that lets you remove unwanted objects from your photos. The Clean Up tool in the ‌Photos‌ app is able to automatically detect objects in an image that might not be wanted, but you can also tap, circle, or brush over an unwanted object to remove it.

Zooming in on an image can help with using a finger as a brush to remove smaller blemishes and issues with an image, and it is intelligent enough not to remove part of a person even if a person or main subject is selected.

Clean Up works on all images in the ‌Photos‌ library, including older images and images captured by other devices like a point and shoot camera or a DSLR.

Transcription Summaries

In Notes and other apps, you can record audio and get a transcript along with a summary of your transcript, which is useful for recording lectures and other audio. Transcription isn't an Apple Intelligence feature, but summaries are.

Focus Modes

There is a dedicated Reduce Interruptions Focus Mode that only shows you important notifications that need attention while filtering out everything else.

ios-18-1-focus-mode-changes.jpg

When customizing an existing Focus mode or creating a new one, there is a new toggle to turn on Intelligent Breakthrough and Silencing. This option allows imp... Click here to read rest of article

I hope that Apple will also support Tagalog a local dialect or some may call it the National Tagalog Language.

How much storage space does AI currently take up once enabled? Not sure I want to enable it, have it consume a large amount of storage and then rarely use it.

Supported iPhones require 4GB of storage to use Apple Intelligence - this will grow as more features are added.

I'm surprised that Apple would released this after all the marketing only for you to have to join a waitlist to use the features. I've never seen them so unconfident. Am I missing something? Have these features been turned on for you automatically?

It's infuriating.

The only explanation I can think of is that Apple is trying to stagger the rollout and not have tens or hundreds of millions of devices start using it simultaneously.

But even that's not exactly a good look.

A GD waitlist after touting that 18.1 brings the first round of "Apple Intelligence" 🤯🤯🤯🤯???

This is ridiculous.

Interesting thing is I updated my 16 PM and MBP 16" M2 Max at the same time. iPhone finished first and joined the waitlist on the phone. MBP finished a minute or 2 later and when I went to check (and assumedly join the waitlist on the MBP, it was already checked or said "joined." So something there is connected.

View attachment 2443285

This might be an indication that joining Apple Intelligence is done on the iCloud account level and not your particular device. After you've joined, you just switch it on for whichever device you want.

FWIW, I had to wait about 14 hours on the waitlist before I received access.

I need to know if I can turn it off completely and it won't use any RAM and preferably not download and use any of my SSD space either

I hope they don't pull a MS and deeply integrate it into the OS so they'll be a bunch of stuff running in the background all the time

Nothing against AI. I use Claude and open AI for coding and play with stable diffusion. I just don't think Apple AI will be very useful for me since I don't use any Apple apps or services or have any Apple devices besides my Mac mini
