Is there anyway to remove the Apple Intelligence data after disabling it? I tried AI and there was nothing there for me. Now I want my storage space back.

All I want that AI would be merged in some way with spotlight. I want spotlight to be internal google search. No connections to outside, but to be able to find settings, toggles and other OS features and help items.

How much memory does Apple Intelligence use on macOS? (I realize it takes up about 4 GB storage.) I don't have it as Siri is set to Canadian English (which is currently not supported by AI, and I don't feel like changing it to US English).

BTW, if you do switch to US English and download it, does it get deactivated again if you set it back to a different English?

So I bought an iPhone 16 pro last week.
I cant use this AI as I live in europe, WTF.
Should have stayed with my iPhone 14 pro.
Wrong. I’m in Finland, that’s in Europe by the way, and it works on my phone (iPhone 16 Pro Max). Maybe it’s OHS or Operator Head Space.

Many of us, want inference engines, in our desktops and mobile devices, for privacy. The development of machine learning, long ago available, in Apple devices, now at say 35 tops, in the iPad mini 7, with 8GB of unified RAM memory, 128GB of storage capacity. The Mac mini M4, with 38 tops, 16GB of unified ram memory, 256GB of storage capacity, a bit low, for a desktop, but nonetheless good AI capable devices at a reasonable price. There’s trade in for the iPad mini; what I’d like, is some deep slow capabilities, turn 11 pages into a graphic novel. Turn 11 pages into 80 pages, I would expect to have to do editing, but it would be helpful.

It’s quite possible, but rarely achievable, not user friendly, for instance, the AI, once wrote about the childhood of one of my characters, a mentor in algebra, quite good, then it spent 3 days, making 80 pages, out of the 11 pages, using a fraction of the available AI, memory abilities. But I couldn’t get it to give it to me, from the AI, within the machine, to within the machine, in Microsoft Word. Hope springs eternal, maybe one day, we’ve hit the law of diminishing returns, but AI specific architectures and the likes of unified memory, coupled with user friendly software, could give us long slow processing. It might, be able to be done, in an hour and then the work, of editing, refining the work, could begin. It’s the availability, of the ability, that I hope for, without a PHD, to a normal creative persistent mind. Or the stock market and the law of diminishing returns, will squash this, unless people can actually use the new opportunities, it’ll just be a toy, a novelty.

The undocumented system requirement is you have to boot your mac from internal drive, doesn't support booting extenal drive. This puts users at a fork in the road between storage, security or AI.

Late to the game, already outdated, and outgunned by competitors. What the f*** has Apple been doing? It's embarrassing.
What has Apple been doing?

If I live in a non-english speaking country, does it make sense this release?, why not just a security release for the rest of the world?.
Does it make the iphone 15 pro slower?

Been playing with it on a 16 PM and while it's a good toe-dip, Apple has a long way to go before it's useful. Most of it is novel but that soon grows old and I'm feeling that wide as a lake, shallow as a thimble vibe already. Summaries for mail, a feature I most looked forward to, leaves a lot to be desired as do the proofing tools and I'm not the type to mess with image playgrounds or genmoji- I'll never use either one so it's wasted on anyone like me. Shame they couldn't make something with a more universal appeal. My Pixel and Galaxy test devices have spoiled me on what an on-phone "AI" is capable of, and at least on the Pixel front, Google is releasing enhancements every week it seems. Samsung less-so, but I'd argue where both Samsung and Apple chose to persist with keeping their old assistant names, in a side by side test Bixby is killing it while Siri struggles with the basics still. This is not the generational leap advertised for Siri, just the same dumb assistant with a new coat of paint. I'm irritated by this. Of course comparing both to Pixel, well it's not a contest really. It's gonna take some huge effort to reverse course (totally doable as Apple often shows it is capable of marshalling their smaug's hoard when needed) and work across their typically secretive and silo'd groups (extremely doubtful on this given institutional leanings). It's not good unless it's all you have, maybe in a few years it can better hold it's own. I think it goes to show how well-considered, if silly, Joanna Stearn's AI assistant camping trip holds up. Of the 3 AI assistants I listed, Apple is objectively the worst -right now- and what worries me is how far behind they are at this critical point in time. I'm unconvinced that sooper dooper Amazon chips are gonna allow for a comeback, or that Apple has the deep talent with AI chips like they do with their unbeatable desktop and portable silicon. It's Apples and oranges

Let's hope the wait is worth it. I'm certainly not holding my breath. Most of this is already available on other AI services anyway. I am thoroughly underwhelmed and disappointed by this Apple AI product/service and the painfully slow release is just embarrassing. Waiting for iOS 19 may have been better, but then there would have been virtually no selling point for the iPhone 16 I suppose.

Siri is as dumb as ever. It may have context now, but understanding is still extremely limited.
Completely unable to do simple multi-step instructions. "Extract home address from the last email I received about the BMW M60, then show directions to this address in google maps". "Failed to find email with 'extract address'". Wow.

New try (it has context, so can do multiple steps). "Find email received about BMW m60" - Shows a list. "Take first email and extract the home address at the bottom". "Who do you want to message to"? Really? That amount of dialog comprehension in times of ChatGPT 4o and similarly capable models is simply embarrassing. I even typed the messages to make sure it's not about my English accent.

Yep, exactly the sort of thing I was anticipating. Thanks for confirming. Wake me up in a few years when I can ask it to do sensible useful stuff that requires a little "thought". I have no interest in designing AI emojis etc. If I did though, I would come up with some choice one to show what I feel about Siri.

Everything You Need to Know About Apple Intelligence

Now that I know "everything - I am very happy with my 13PM, and have no plans to upgrade for "Apple Intelligence" as I have no use for those "features"
Yeah, what I see happening now more and more is that people don’t trust what others have created (being fotos, text, poems, etc), as: if it looks good, “oh, must be AI”…
It’s great AI can help you.. but abuse is around the corner.

Apple Intelligence is what Apple is calling its artificial intelligence feature set, previewed at WWDC in June 2024. The first Apple Intelligence features launched with iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1, and additional features came in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2. There's still more to come, though, and the rest of the Apple Intelligence features are set to come in 2025.

Apple Intelligence Features Available Now

Writing Tools

writing-tools-rewrite.jpg

  • Proofread text checks for spelling and grammar errors, including word choice and sentence structure. You can accept all suggestions with a tap or go through them one by one with explanations.
  • Rewrite cleans up what you've written and shifts the tone without impacting your content. Options include Friendly, Professional, and Concise.
  • You can select text and get a summary of it with Apple Intelligence. You can choose to create a paragraph, pull out key points, make a list, or create a table. Summaries are available in Mail, Messages, and more.
  • As of iOS 18.2, there is an open-ended Writing Tools option that lets you describe a change you want to make to something you've written. You can choose any mood or writing style that you want, with varying degrees of success.
  • Also in iOS 18.2, Writing Tools has a "Compose" feature that uses Siri ChatGPT integration. With this option, Siri can leverage ChatGPT to compose writing from scratch rather than just rewriting text.
You can select any text on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac and use Apple Intelligence to access Writing Tools for summaries and other features.

Siri

ios-18-1-siri.jpg

  • There's a new glow around the edges of the display when Siri is activated, applicable to iPhone, iPad, and CarPlay. On Mac, the Siri window can be placed anywhere. The glow animates responsively to the sound of your voice so you can tell when Siri is listening without interrupting other things you're doing.
  • A double tap at the bottom of the display brings up the Type to Siri interface so you can type requests instead of speaking them. On Mac, you need to press the Command key twice to bring up Type to Siri. Type to Siri includes suggested requests so you can get your questions answered faster.
  • Siri can maintain context between requests so you can ask a question and then reference it in a second reply. If you ask about the temperature in Raleigh, for example, and then follow up with "what's the humidity?" Siri should know you mean in Raleigh.
  • If you stumble over your words when speaking to Siri, or change what you're saying mid-sentence, Siri will follow along.
  • Siri has Apple's product knowledge and support base for answering questions about your device's features and settings, and can even find settings when you don't know the exact name by using natural language search.
Mail

ios-18-1-smart-replies.jpg

  • There is a summarize button for summarizing any of your incoming emails, plus you will see a brief summary of an email in your inbox list rather than the first few lines of the email.
  • Mail surfaces time sensitive messages first when applicable, putting them at the top of your inbox so you see what's important right away.
  • Smart Reply provides quick-tap responses to emails that you've been sent, with contextual options based on what's in the email.
  • Multiple notifications from Mail will be summarized on your Lock Screen so you can see what's in an email without opening the app.
Messages

ios-18-1-messages-smart-reply.jpg

  • Messages has Smart Reply options for incoming texts, which analyze the content of messages to offer suggestions of what you might want to say.
  • Multiple Messages notifications are summarized on your Lock Screen.
  • You can use all of the Writing Tools features in the Messages app for proofreading and refining what you're planning to send.
Photos

ios-18-1-memory-maker.jpg

  • You can create a Memory Movie with just a description, such as "My cat in 2024," or "Orlando in the summer." The feature automatically picks relevant photos and chooses songs, but you can tweak through the Memory Mixes feature or choose a mood to guide the direction of the audio. You can also add in specific scenes and images you want to see throughout the memory when you're creating the prompt.
  • Natural language search is available in Photos, so you can just describe what you're looking for, such as "Eric rollerskating while wearing green."
  • Search can also find specific moments in video clips.
  • Search offers up smart complete suggestions for narrowing down what you might want to find.
Clean Up
The Photos app also includes "Clean Up," a feature that lets you remove unwanted objects from your photos. The Clean Up tool in the ‌Photos‌ app is able to automatically detect objects in an image that might not be wanted, but you can also tap, circle, or brush over an unwanted object to remove it.

Zooming in on an image can help with using a finger as a brush to remove smaller blemishes and issues with an image, and it is intelligent enough not to remove part of a person even if a person or main subject is selected.
