I've gone back and forth between 12.9" and 11" iPad's since they debuted in 2018. Currently settled on the 11" model which IMO is the ideal for iPad as it exists today.

The only reason I will go up a size again in the future is if we get Xcode for iPad in some form. But even still, the 11" still exemplifies what I want in a tablet, something easy to carry around hand hold with one hand while casually browsing email/taking notes/web surfing. With the 11" I detach it from the keyboard way more often than I did with the 12.9".

The screen on the new 12.9" sounds amazing...but Apple really needs to give me a reason to justify the size/weight with software. I don't really watch any video content on my iPad other than YouTube, anything cinematic will be on my TV.

Aside from the bulk of the 12.9, I think the thing I like the least is the 4:3 aspect ratio. The 11-inch is 13:9, which while not crazy different, is different enough to really feel it and it makes more sense to me. To me the 12.9 feels like I'm holding a huge square.

I have spent enough time as an unregistered lurker (years) to know that people that loathe Apple will frequent this forum. No matter what you say, Apple or any other tech leader for that matter (Samsung, Google, HTC, Microsoft) would not put out a product with such a defective and unusable screen like OP described. OP is either lying about his experience, or his eyes or contact lenses are defective. Say what you will but that's how it is. So yes my statement is 100% true. Not one chance in all of hell is Apple releasing a screen as defective as OP described.
I'm not looking for an argument - but Apple has been at the helm of many "gates".

I have the iPad and these complaints about the screen are laughable. I have tried to produce these photos people have posted with this blooming. You need to have bright whites on pitch blacks, screen brightness all the way up and then it’s takes some fiddling to get the most clickbaity glow on the camera.

is it visible in real life? Yes. Will you notice it very often? No. Is it better than the LCD? Night and day.

And the shadow around the edges… I couldn’t care less about that. For the benefits of the rest of the screen. The blooming is distracting but ONLY because I’ve read all these forums. It is there. But it’s not a thing.

I wonder if it may be app dependent as well.

I was watching Avengers: Endgame 4K UHD Blu-ray full MKV rip on Infuse and it looks absolutely gorgeous on the 2021 Pro 12.9. However, blooming was pretty obvious on the FIVE YEARS LATER caption (25% screen brightness in pitch dark room). I checked out the same scene in Disney+ and I get similar blooming.

Mind, I was playing the movie side by side with my 2017 Pro 12.9 and the grayish bloom around the caption is pretty much the color of entire screen on the 2017 Pro.

Still, that's just a few seconds in a 3+ hour long movie that otherwise looks absolutely great on the new iPad Pro so no big deal.

Also, yay. I think I'm getting used to the Mini-LED display. Didn't get a headache while watching Endgame.

Interesting comments on this thread

I've got an iPad Pro 2nd gen 12.9 and I'm debating selling it and getting the new iPad Pro, I was set on replacing with the 12.9 but now thinking is the 11 worth it (plus being more cost friendly) instead, just worried the screen will feel like a drop, so it's definitely interesting to see those that have done similar

Spending some time with the 12.9, the screen is brilliant. The whites are almost too white. It runs a bit warm though using it in my lap just browsing. I guess it is the display and not the m1 causing this.

I am in a similar position. Last year I tried a 12.9 and returned it for an 11. Again, I wanted to get the 12.9 but will probably end up returning it and keeping my 11. I want so badly to enjoy this massive screen, but it just seems too unwiedly (even when I use an iPad exclusively for personal things aside from a work-issued MBP). I think when I go into the office, it will be much less distracting to pull out the 11 than a 12.9 for meeting notes. It really is such a big step up; I’ll try it for the next week or so to edit photos and whatnot and if it continues to feel too big will have to pack it up and send it back. Anybody else similar? How do you get over this “too big” feeling?

It does make me laugh when people use words like “unwieldy” to describe the 12.9. It’s just over an inch larger in each dimension. You don’t need a crane to use it. I got used to it relatively quickly and my 10.5 is a toy now. I wouldn’t go back.

So many comments about how useless this thread is. But for me who is considering which iPad to get, it is actually very useful. I'm very glad to see this thread.

I pre-ordered the 12.9" solely for that XDR display, but now I think I'm gonna cancel my order and just get the 11 inch instead as I like to form factor more.

As opposed to see for yourself and make your own mind up? Wow, ok.

That’s fair, but an inch in each direction is a big deal when you consider the form factor. In terms of screen size, its over 33% bigger and weighs about half a pound more. Again, it works for you, which is great, but this is not working for me when I like to carry my iPad around everywhere. Maybe I bought into the XDR hype a little too much, the screen is phenomonal and I love what it looks like for movies vs my 2020 11-inch, but the solution for me is probably to return this 12.9 and wait for mini-LED to hit the smaller iPads.

How are you unable to carry the 12.9 everywhere with you? Genuine question.

Exactly, people has to make opinion somehow, and I don’t why but it irks me (that can’t be a good thing) when they base it on someone who already made theirs.
Best thing peeps could do is not to listen to anybody, go to Apple Store or try each device in the 14-day free return period.

Exactly, zero risk really

It’s the same people that need a special tool to open one of these, because their hands and wrists are too weak.

You guys the same folks who in fifth grade had to carry 5 chairs to show how strong you were to the ladies? Now you have an F350 to carry a cooler to the beach?

Some people just prefer to lug something smaller, hence why it comes in two sizes. It’s not an indicia of manliness, lmao.
Who mentioned manliness??
