The lower the refresh rate the higher the chance of motion sickness.
Always keep the refresh rate the highest possible.

Interesting. If I watch other people playing video games at Dave and Busters, I get ill/nauseous. I would think the frame rates were higher?

Another thing I notice is the text and overall image is not as sharpe or has as much pop and contrast as my air 2. My air 2 screen is just more comfortable to look at and yes I turned true tone off.

Youre looking at it wrong.

Maybe the lower refresh rates when looking at static images are having a negative effect?

Through rose tinted glasses :)

I may wait a while before even considering to buy as this is a big issue and I love reading on my current ipads (mini 4 and Pro 9.7)

I have spent hours on my 10.5 and have had no eye fatigue what so ever.

Everyone is different, but my text is as sharp as my 9.7 or better.
Is there any noticle frame drops? On a device in store it was dropping frames and although you could see ProMotion in action it wasnt buttery smooth.

No frame drops that I can detect. I play a lot of Real Racing and the ProMotion makes it like a whole new game, so much more realistic and this is an older game. ProMotion is THE number one improvement for me. The get used to the larger 10.5 screen quickly but ProMotion allows buttery smooth movement on everything. The ProMotion effect does not wear off quickly like the screen size.

Im so tempted but its just I dont use my Pro 9.7 a whole lot compared to my mini 4 and Macbook... so so tempting but I am hoping ProMotion does get rolled out to other devices, this Fall I hope

maybe the refresh rate is dropping below 60 when on a static page? I remember the old crt monitors I would always have mine adjusted to 75hz otherwise I would get a headache but since then ive have gotten used to 60 but wouldnt want any lower....this is something to consider, Im on the fence about getting a 9.7 pro cheap vs the 10.5

Over the last two days, I find myself reaching for my 9.7 ipp more than my 10.5 due to the eye strain and headache. I think I will force myself to use the 10.7 for the next three days to see if perhaps my eyes adjust to the new technology.

If you're reading a static image/page, the refresh rate drops anyway. It's adaptive depending on what is displayed. I don't see this causing eye strain. Very strange.

could the adaptive refresh rate changing be causing the eye strain as the eye adjusts to the different rates?

I thought it was supposed to be better for your eyes, maybe it's strange coming from 60hz or the strain comes from switching between them frequently?

I completely disagree. Going from 60 Hz to 85 Hz on a CRT was very beneficial to reduce flicker. But LCDs usually don't flicker.

Higher frame rates can cause more nausea. I remember getting my first 3D graphics accelerator in the 90's, and it improved frame rate from 15 FPS to 60 FPS. It quickly made me feel very ill. But I got used to it. (60 FPS on a CRT looks smoother than 120 FPS on an LCD)

Many people felt nauseous when watching "The Hobbit" in the theater because of its higher frame rate. (48 instead of the conventional 24)

None of this should be relevant for reading static content.

The concept behind ProMotion is that iOS varies the frame rate based on need. When you're scrolling or drawing for example it boosts the frame rate. However, when looking at a photo or reading (or watching a 24 fps movie) the frame rate drops and could actually be lower than the older iPads. It's not running at 120hz all the time. That would kill the battery.
