I'm not doubting that some people are experiencing eye strain when using the X, but I've had 3 vitrectomies (because of 2 detached retinas), 1 scleral buckle. 3 lens implants, a retinal peel, retinal swelling, and a sore lower back. However, I'm not experiencing any undue eye strain.

I count myself lucky, though.

I have no headache/migraine/eye issues outside of the use of the iPhone X. I honestly thought I had brain tumors during the 10 days I was using the thing. It was that bad.

so how many people suffer from this?
from this thread it seems like a serious phenomenon.

Barely used my X yesterday and was feeling much better overall throughout the day. By barely used, i mean i had 60% battery by 7pm where usually it would be about 20% remaining. Was using a little today and some nausea/headaches kicked in after a few minutes. I have an 8+ coming in tonight from Swappa, and will be returning the X. "Downgrading" sucks, but hey, saves me $400, and hopefully more importantly, no headaches, but I'll report back in a few days.

Hey all, thought I would give an update for us headache people.
Swapped out the X for an 8+. Had to wait a few days to make it official because i'm a little neurotic and saw a dead pixel on the 8+ so I had the screen swapped. Returned the X last Thursday. The employee was sympathetic and was familiar with the fact that some people were having eye-strain or getting headaches from the screen. He personally wanted to keep his 8+ but peer pressure made him change to the X because as an employee, he should be showing/using the latest and greatest.

I digress. The headaches have subsided tremendously. Though honestly, I still get a very slight headache in the same areas when using my 8+. Will be getting my eyes checked for annual checkup which coincidentally my doctor emailed just recently reminding me. But I no longer get the wooziness or severe pain the X would give me.

Certainly miss the X and the gestures. Face ID was growing on me, but the convenience of gestures I will definitely miss. That and the form factor of having a phone fit in my pocket without bothering me. The screen itself, I will not miss because as many arguments as there are, the Plus screen is bigger, and better for video viewing, no contest! But glad to have awesome battery life :) 10-11 hours of usage vs 8hrs on the X.

In conclusion, if you're really feeling some pain using the X, switch it out. Happy early Thanksgiving :)

11/21 EDIT/UPDATE: No headaches at all anymore. It must've been residual effect from using the X for two weeks and was lasting a few more days after i returned it.

Till I tried Iphone X, I never have any eye strain experience when just looking at phone/TV/Computer screens for 5 mins. I used LG B6p OLED TV for several days and never had issue.

I feel we are bombarded with all kinds of waves in our daily life, that must affect our health in some degree. That is why I keep as less electronic device in my bedroom as possible and never put phone close my head while I am sleeping

I also experience headaches and eyestrain. I try to take a break from looking at computer screens and iphones and ipads and all that for a while, that seems to help. I try to close my eyes as if I'm about to nap and deep breathing exercies.

I don't really get eye-strain from the iPhone X, but somehow the screen is definitely uncomfortable. my eyes have trouble adjusting to the image, never had that problem with any other iphone before. I think it might be because of the awful blue-shift, the ever so slightest movement and the colour varies between yellowish and blueish-white which makes it kinda difficult for the eyes to adjust / keep focussed.

Migraines involve a complex interplay between the eyes and the nervous system. I have very healthy eyes, but I have migraines that manifest with different symptoms depending on the trigger.

I’ve had symptoms similar to what people here are experiencing when using my iPad. I don’t know what kinds of climates people on this thread are dealing with, but this time of year with the sudden change to early darkness and dry indoor heating systems, dry eyes and headaches aren’t uncommon. I’m not saying the IPhone X display or laser system isn’t a trigger, but it could make things even more intense this time of year in parts of the world experiencing autumn.

I have slight issues with extreme nausea when in motion. Some phone screens will also cause this.

I was in a bad car accident twice. Neither time I was driving, bah!

If I just try to deal with the nausea and keep going, I'll end up with a huge headache (Or is it a migraine? I honestly don't get them often enough to know the difference).

I do wonder if I'd be affected by the iPhone X.

iPhone X is a great new product from Apple!

Do not use iPhone X if you are allergic to iPhone X. Side effects may include nausea, headache, migraine, vomiting, pain, sweating, nervousness, or mild death. If you experience any of these symptoms, discontinue use of iPhone X and make a Genius Bar appointment.
HILARIOUS

So my original iPhone had crackling speakers, just swapped it out for another and the replacement immediately started fatiguing my eyes, it also had a pretty bad colorshift, though for some reason the Apple employees can't see it. Attempting to get it swapped once more and hopefully get a good display, did not have these problems with my original.

Just to update (I was finding the phone made my eyes feel weirdly tired), I’ve pretty much got used to it now. In daytime use it’s absolutely fine. Using it in the dark I can still detect some high frequency flicker but not enough to make me want to return the phone, which is an amazing device in every other way! So it’s worth persevering for a few days if your return policy allows (and its not causing you physical pain/headaches of course!)

Have you used cell phones with oled screen before? If not, your eye strain may be due to oled screens and their refresh rate amongst other things. Alot of people have headaches fro oled screens. Google and youll find alot of posts about it.

This seems to be a problem and specially not due to OLED as in that case I am using my samsung along with iPhone from years. After getting iPhoneX i am feeling strain on my eyes. Is IR blaster is main culprit in this as it continuously blast IR dots even when not required. Just try to film your iPhone X while from another device and you will feel the frequency of IR blaster.

Something is maybe amiss with IPX screen calibration. Been using Samsung AMOLED for long time and tried X for about 20min in store. Something feel different about the X screen compared to samsung. My eyes didnt get uncomfortable/tired but the feeling is like it is more difficult for my eyes to focus on text/image esp when they are scrolling/transition/in motion.

It is a mistake to confuse Samsung screens with the iPhone X screen. Samsung fabricate the screen BUT to the technical requirements and specifications ordered by Apple.

I have been using Samsung screens for years and never encountered this situation. The iPhone X affects 'some' customers but far from all, I just happened to be one of the minority unlucky ones who is affected. Can Apple rectify this situation? I would think so, will they? That's another question entirely. Apple depend a great deal on their customer loyalty. We will each have our own opinions on that.

All current Samsung OLED panels after Galaxy S2 to my knowledge use PWM

Better?

Samsung has been giving apple crap screens since the beginning. Apple always has horrible quality control on the screens.

That's inherently false, and frankly not even remotely believable. I'm not sure why you would even say something like this, given that Apple has had some of the best LCD panels in the industry with calibration and quality. Which leads me to believe, you must be upset with them about something express your frustration to say something so outlandish and untrue.

Just had mine less than 24 hours and have had some headache and eye strain. As suggested in this thread, turned off Require Attention For Face ID, Attention Aware Features, and True Tone. That has helped and will work with it a few more days and see what happens. If it gets better I'll start turning those things back on and see what happens.

Have noticed some saying their eyes adjusted in a few days so I'll see if that happens too!! Hoping it does because man, I love this phone. It is flat awesome!!!
