What a PITA!

Apple and other OEMs surely know about this. I bet there is a SOLID chunk of sub-30 year olds that suffer and don’t know any better.

This has to change!
The iPhone 13 Pro & Pro Max having PWM with a frequency response time around 480 Hz at 50% brightness and above is a big deal, because it means we're now making progress.
  1. Its nearly double the number we've seen with past (OLED) iPhone releases. Before this, the best PWM response time was the iPhone 11 Pro at 290 Hz. A majority of (OLED) iPhones were hovering +/- 240 Hz.
  2. Other manufacturers LTPO displays have not made any improvements in PWM. Samsung's LTPO displays have frequency response times +/- 250 Hz since they've launched them with no signs of improvement. OnePlus, a manufacturer who was aware of PWM and offered DC Dimming on most of its devices until recently, has a a LTPO display on its OnePlus 9 Pro with a frequency response time at a meager 192 Hz. Oppo had the best success with LTPO displays within +/- 365 Hz on their Find X3 series.
I think we'll see improvements in PWM as the LTPO technology gets better.

A majority of the population don't have PWM issues when the frequency response time is higher than 500 Hz. I have a 12.9" iPad Pro which has PWM at 19190 Hz and I don't suffer the eye-strain/headaches that I did with past iPhone OLED displays.

I haven't gotten to play around much with my iPhone 13 Pro Max, but so far, I have not experienced the eye-strain/headaches I did with past models. And I've yet to go into Accessibility to Adjust White Point (but I did turn off the Face ID Attention features).

Alright, so I’ve used the 13 Pro for about 3 hours~ in total today. So far, at least in my case, it’s absolutely the best implementation of iPhone PWM I’ve experienced. Definitely better than the 12, and *miles* ahead of the 11 and XS.

I was able to use it for an hour straight with minimal eye strain and only a slight headache that dissipated relatively quickly. I’ll see if this continues tomorrow with more extensive use, but so far, I’m very happy with Apple’s progress here. Not sure I’m keeping it, since the headaches and eye strain are annoying (However mild they may be), but this definitely gives me hope for future screens having even better PWM implementations.

Also, flicker issues aside, this phone is 10/10. Having been stuck on the 8 Plus for years, the body changes and gesture controls are an amazing upgrade. I *really* want to keep this thing 😅

I want to stay in the ecosystem. Its a PITA that they know about it and have not produced an option since the IP11. So, I will hold out hope with my IPP 2018 and XR. Will possibly upgrade to a IP11 256 soon as stock on those are drying up locally.

I am glad you have been enjoying the IP13. Perhaps I will test drive one once stock levels out. 🤓Dream for me would be a IPM 13. Love small out of the way phones like the 4/5 and OG SE.

Spent the evening on the 13 Mini as I really do prefer the lighter weight and compact design over the 13 Pro. Despite having no eye discomfort or fatigue while using the phone I have woken this morning with a terrible migraine behind my eyes and the front of my temples. It still hasn't dissipated half a day later! I feel very sick with it, it's horrible.

It was a warm night and I did have a takeaway meal so possibly too much salt combined with heat? Also I have being using the iPhones longer than I normally would. These could all be contributing factors but it has me feeling I should avoid the 13 Mini now.

Frequency isn't everything while Modulation also matters (according to IEEE standards 1789). Higher frequency can be even more risky if Modulation is high.

Please see my replies below for details. TL; DR PWM is WORSE on iPhone 13 series than iPhone 12 Pro. It's not progress but downgrading due to LTPO display and of course the manufacturers' pursuit of display image quality rather than consumers' eye health (esp. in the long term)

I just got home with a 13 mini. It's 1000% better than the 12 mini was on launch. With the 12 mini at launch, my eyes were in pain after 5 minutes of use. So far it's been about 15 minutes of use, and my eyes are OK. I'll come back and let ya'll know how it is after using it for a day or two.
How’s the mini doing for you?

It seems like it absolutely could be the phone, but there are also several legitimate confounding variables. Maybe it’s good that you have two weeks, so that you can see if the bad is consistent daily or changes. Good luck!

I think alot of ppl want it to be ok but ill be honest pwm is still there and more ppl will complain
It is still there, but 480Hz makes it a lot easier on the eyes.
Been using my Pro Max for 2.5 - 3 hours a day the last days. Slight irritation but nowhere near as annoying as with the previous models. No headache yet. Will use it some more this week and decide next weekend wether to keep it or return.

Ill buy it based on you lol

I know in this thread there WERE people that had problems even with the 11. I haven't given up hope yet, but I will wait to buy it until I get the 8 weeks return window for the holidays.
I think that’s ultimately what I’m going to do as well. I’m still using the 13 pro and while wayyyy better than my previous experiences it’s still not as pleasant as my 11. But one thing I’ve found is I’m longing for the max. This regular pro feels small to me. I think I’ll give the max a go during the holiday return window.

This has been my experience too. My eyes are still irritated but I'm hoping that they'll get used to the new phone. They're not "sand paper gritty, wanna rip your eyeballs out" annoyed like they were with the 12 Pro though so I feel like the 13 Pro is definitely a step in the right direction. My eyes get super angery when things change though. It takes me at least a full month to get used to new glasses, even when there's nothing wrong with them. I'm going to keep using it until at least next weekend and then maybe decide. I'm cautiously optimistic that I'll be keeping it though. At least right now.

I'm one of those people who can't use the 11 or the Xr for that matter. I've tried every OLED iPhone. The 13 Pro Max, while not perfect, has been the most tolerable of all the previous OLED screens for me. I'm going to give it a week to see if it works out, but I'm not optimistic. I'll just go back to my trusty 8 Plus. To be honest, until I read this thread back in 2017 I never knew that I had an issue with OLED screens on phones. It's very frustrating! I've always upgraded my iPhones every two years since the original. But that ended in 2017. 🙁

@TVTechGrl just curious, why can’t you use the iPhone 11 or XR? Most of us who have issues are still using the 11 or XR because they both have an LCD screen, not OLED.

@spillerz I really don’t know. A few people have mentioned temporal dithering being the reason. However, I use a 2020 iPad Pro without any problems.
Yeah, that’s weird. I haven’t heard people having problems with the 11..
Today for me is day 3 with 13 pro max. My eyes feel a lot better than they did on Friday.. no sick feeling (until I start thinking about it.. more so like oh wow. I feel great, then I start feeling sick lol). 4 hours and 39 minutes of screen time so far today. 8 1/2 hours yesterday. 7 hours on Friday

Thanks for posting this. Disappointing to see that they’re going the wrong way 😐

From my understanding of this issue, there are several factors in flicker sensitivity, and certain devices may trigger symptoms depending on a person’s individual threshold for flicker. The vast majority seem to have no issues whatsoever. A small minority seem to have issues with severe flicker (like with PWM). An even smaller minority have trouble with devices like the iPhone 11, iPad Pro, MacBook, etc depending on their sensitivity level.

I’m honestly surprised that there aren’t any solutions to this yet, tech based or not. I’m hoping that there’s some combination of screen filter types/colors, glasses that dampens the effect of the flicker, medicine that relaxes the part of the part of the body that interprets flicker, etc that hasn’t been discovered yet.

There just has to be a solution somewhere. Especially since this doesn’t seem to have gotten a ton of attention up until now.
