I'll share some of my recent experiences as well. I had the iPhone 12. It was not great. There was a red tint that was emphasized by viewing angles. During this time I'd been testing the iPhone 11 of my wife and it strangely enough seemed like an overall better phone. Better battery life, better colors and a more uniform display.

It was a real bummer, because I enjoyed the squared edges that brought me back to the iPhone 4S era. The worst thing about it though was that it gave me a constant pressure in the eyes at low brightness. I was hoping that the iPhone 13 series would be better with the 120hz display, so I ordered the 13 Pro. It seemed like a nice upgrade from the 12, but I was not sold so it went back. The weight balance combined with the massive camera bump felt cumbersome for daily use. I could live with that, but it also seemed to oversharpen the photos to the point where they didn't look natural.

I then ordered the normal 13 hoping to be positively surprised, but it actually ended up being worse than the 12 and the 13 Pro when it came to eyestrain, dizziness and nausea. It was actually really terrible even if it supposedly has the highest PWM-frequency of the series. It took some time to really understand and feel it, but eventually it became so off-putting that I couldn't look at the display without feeling nausea. I wanted to like it, but when I realized that my eyes started having symptoms of astigmatism after just looking at it, it was time to let it go.

I recently bought the Phone 11 and it's such a relief to the eyes. Zero blurry text or letters jumping here. I don't game on a phone, so the performance doesn't really matter to me. Regarding the 120hz of iPhone 13 Pro. It's nice, but having used 144hz monitors for a long time, it can't be compared to the jump from 60hz of monitors to a higher refresh rate. iOS is very smooth even at 60hz compared to Android. Unfortunately this one came with some dust behind the camera lens, and the battery was at 0% upon receiving it, so I'll most likely have to send it back.

I also think it's good to keep these threads alive, because flickering/PWM is an issue that is generally not well-known. I can only imagine the amount of people who have no idea why they're having random symptoms because they can't understand the culprit being their OLED smartphone, because nobody talks about it. Hopefully the 14 series or the upcoming SE will be better in this aspect. It seems to me that the only way to send a message is if enough people continue talking about it and actually give feedback to Apple. Here's a link for those that are interested: https://www.apple.com/feedback/

I'm in our electronics store to take a look at the iPhone 13 Pro Max, which I will get on Monday. I read it for 15 minutes and it was very easy on my eyes. The writing also looked quieter than on my iPhone 12 Pro and than on an iPhone 13 Pro. It was also very easy on my eyes that the font was bigger. I hope the feeling is confirmed on Monday. I would be happy, just because of the larger display.

I got 256 ip11, next week will probably buy new one (some good deal in local store), to renew battery and warranty:) will be ready to wait 3 more years for non flickery iphone

Isn't there a saying, "Everything old is new again."? Well as my husband sets up his new Pixel 6 Pro, I am setting up a new iPhone Xr.

It is a black 64 gb AT&T phone that is one of the many free phones the carrier has been sending out to customers using old 3g phones on their network. They closed their 3g network and have issued old model Android phones to 3g Android customers. And old model iphones to iPhone customers to retain their business on newer networks.

My husband has been maintaining his late mother's account. She never used it for receiving calls, preferring to use her land line, so he kept the line active at minimal cost in case we'd ever need it for a child. And so a few days ago we were sent the Xr. Anyway, I have put the Sim from my 13 Pro into the Xr and am setting it up.

I last had an Xr the year the phone was released, replacing it with the 11 Pro. So yes it does feel strange to go back in time from a state of the art 512 gb 13 Pro to a humble 64 gb Xr.

But the overwhelming feeling is gratitude I have this phone. It's nothing short of serendipitous that it arrived completely unexpected right when pwm related suffering was peaking and I couldn't put it down to allergies or anything else.

I'm not able to look at my 12 mini or 13 Pro for more than a quick glance without pain and worse, vertigo. I tried turning off the variable refresh rate but that didn't make a bit of difference in the end. I'm typing this on my Samsung.

My Apple Watch arrives next week. I'll have the Xr paired to it.

I have many of my old cases ready to go! I had given some away to friends but I still have some favorites left. I'm just missing a screen protector. Temporarily, I have a 12 Pro one on.

There is so much I've forgotten about the Xr that I'm excited to rediscover. I'm happy to see that this one has a more gentle display than I remember on my previous Xr. I will have to be careful to manage storage with only 64 gb but I'm sure I can do it.

Lol ignore the awful screen protector. I have a new one coming in from Amazon.

So, my iPhone 13 Pro Max has just arrived. Just set it up, and then it will be extensively tested.
Then after 2-3 days of testing I will report what my eyes are doing.
I have to give my eyes 2-3 days to get used to the new display.
Won't make the mistake of giving up too quickly again.

After the first few hours I am very satisfied with the iPhone 13 Pro Max. I read for an hour at a time and my eyes did not react. The display is much more pleasant than that of the iPhone 13 Pro. I will now see what happens in daily use for a few days. I hope it stays that way, then I'll be very happy and satisfied.

Just wanted to let you guys know that in many Apple stores and online Apple stores, the phones purchased today up to Dec. 25 can be kept until January 7th. If my 13 Pro arrives at the end of the month, I can test drive it for a month to make sure it works for me. Just in case you're on the fence. I believe you have to test it to know... data you find on the internet only goes so far.

Yeah, I’m doing okay with the mini. It’s not exactly like the iPhone 7 experience or before (PWM??? Whaaatttt????). There’s something funky with the newer LCD’s and OLED in general, but I’m getting used to it.

I'm just dropping in to say that I've been testing a new 16-inch MacBook Pro (with the mini LED display) for work and I've had no issues with it at all. Absolutely gorgeous display with none of the drawbacks of OLED. I believe they use PWM, but at 14,800 Hz.

I'm not sure how feasible it is to miniaturise the tech to fit into an iPhone, yet it gives me hope for the future. Additionally, I believe microLED is supposed to flicker at a similarly-high frequency.

P.S. I just tried the 12 Pro Max one last time before I post it back tomorrow. It's horrible! Eye strain, pressure, dryness, itchiness and nausea within minutes.

To modify a classic Steve Jobs line, the iPhone 11 is like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in PWM hell.

That's very interesting. I have the new 16" and it's torture for me. Turning off promotion helps a little.

Can I give you a warm hug

Just spoke to a friend. He also has the iPhone 13 Pro Max. He told me that he had slight problems with his eyes and feeling unwell for the first 2-3 weeks. Then it was gone, as if his brain had adjusted to the new technology (OLED). I had also read here that someone no longer had any problems with the iPhone 12 Mini after several weeks. Is there such a thing that the brain first has to adapt and then get used to it? Find this approach very interesting.

Yes i also hear that from people some now and then, had the same with my samsung lcd with pwm. No issues anymore, with iphones ? different story, even after months i personally didn't manage to get used to the phones.

I might be the person whom you read about getting adjusted to the 12 mini. I have two phone lines as a result of a BOGO deal years ago, so I had a 12 Pro max on the second line. It had a screen that was bad for watching videos. I had the glowy green problem but at least the pwm didn’t bother me too much. Because of that screen defect, I went ahead and traded it for the 13 Pro.

Then all hell broke loose in my head. I suddenly, immediately became unable to bear my 12 mini again. It’s like being punched in the eyes to look at my mini. With my 13 Pro the symptoms are more subtle but probably familiar to everyone here who gets that weird “I’m feeling really off” sensation. I have had the 13 Pro for a month and instead of getting used to it I just grew more sensitive to it. It affected me differently than my 12 mini did when I first got it. While less physically painful than the 12 mini, I developed a low grade headache that never went away even with aspirin and Tylenol and I felt a little bit of motion sickness and vertigo even with the variable refresh turned off.

I’m on an iPhone XR now and I’m really happy with it. It’s got a much less harsh backlighting than my original XR from a few years ago had. It’s lovely and I’m so happy with it!

I was in town and my local store had stock.....

iPhone 13 256GB Midnight.
iPhone 13 Pro 256GB Graphite
iPhone 13 Mini 256GB Midnight

One last roll of the dice this year. Let's see if 60hz mode and the highest PWM rate of any iPhone makes the difference?
I thought it would be better to regret something I did do rather than something I didn't. ?

If anyone is interested, I’ve recently purchased an iPhone 12 regular with a broken screen off eBay. Found a place that installs LCD screens and have been using the new combo all day today. No flicker/pwm at all with the LCD. No headaches. But the colors are definitely more stale compared to iPhone 8.

I may be walking around with a phone that could melt at any moment. But I’ll take the risk. Will post more info if interested, and will update if phone dies.
It’s been almost three weeks with my frankenstein LCD iPhone 12, and I’ve been very pleased with it so far. No PWM or flicker on any brightness level, so no eye issues. My battery life is less because of the screen, but I knew that would be the case. Currently get only 4 hours of screen on time per battery charge (iPhone 12 has a smaller battery than the 11). There were some obscure HDR display options I needed to disable in settings but now everything works perfectly. FaceID and all. Loving the upgrade from the iPhone 8. But, again, I should remind folks that this is a risky endeavor and the phone could still fail in the future due to higher than normal power draw.
