That’s the thing about eye strain. It strains the eyes and they become weaker and the muscles become more sensitive to use. Just like over straining any muscle.

There is a remedy of sorts though. Stop using anything that gives you eye strain for a month or so to give the eyes some time to recover and get stronger.
It’s the 20-20-20 rule: 20 hours on phone, 20 months off phone, 20 years to recover. ?

Well, this is stupid. I ordered my iPhone 13 on October 25th. I'll be finally getting it sometime this week. And of course, because I ordered it in October, it isn't covered by the Holiday Return Policy as I had hoped it would be, even THOUGH it's only going to be delivered now. Well, just my luck. Now I only have 14 days to find out if it works for me or not. Good grief.
Two weeks is long enough. Promise.

Has anyone noticed that they can tolerate looking at oled from an off angle? My significant other has an iPhone 13 and previously had an iPhone X and if I was looking at the screen at a 45° angle from the side it did not bother me but if I looked at it straight on it did bother me. I’m not sure what could account for this?

This is an amusing image, peeping notifications like a pigeon.

Probably a mistake: I ordered an iPhone 13 Mini.

All signs are pointing to iPhone 13 Pro being the best for PWM-sensitive users; however, that didn’t work for me. I have a better feeling about iPhone 13 Mini and the form factor is probably being discontinued next year so I’m curious to try it. Unlikely it’ll work out if I’m being honest but I don’t mind providing more experiences like others in this thread.

Well, there’s three documented people saying that the 13 mini is working for them. (I’m one, and unless the other two updated, then they are still not having issues.)

Try to go into it with an open mind and be as objective as possible.

Not that the naysayers have a point that’s it’s all “just in our head and imagining things”, but there is something to confirmation bias.

I was curious to try the 13 mini for the same reason that it may be discontinued and I’ve wanted a current year iPhone forever (never had one till now, not counting the few days I had with 12 mini last year).

So it’s not impossible that the 13mini will work for you :)

Good luck!!!

At 4,7” is so small mate.
Yeah and I didn’t think I was picky, but using the 7 series with a home button (after using the full screen swipe interface) is really…. I can’t think of a good word…. “Icky”. The bezels do jump out as wasted space, and the swipe is really missed.

But the 7 series actually had a wider screen which is nice ?

You end up getting used to it surprisingly. I’m using an iPhone SE now and even iPhone 13 Pro felt massive in comparison.

The original iPhone only had a 3.5” display, then we dealt with a 4” display on iPhone 4 and up.
I had 13 mini for one week. Apps were ok…. but the screen surface on safari soooo small…. couldn’t get used on browsing at it. Back to 11 again and it’s the sweet spot for me.

Have you tried both the 13 pro and 13 mini and found the mini OK but the 13 pro not? I'm wondering whether to change my 13 pro for a 13 mini but as they're both OLED I wondered why there would be a difference.

I only tried the Pro in the apple store and Best Buy. Though I don’t think that’s the best way to test for PWM issues.

It was difficult for me to tell if I had real issues with it or not.

I didn’t want to get another large phone after the 11, so the mini was the only interest I realistically had. And I thought that I’d give it whirl and just return it within two weeks if the mini gave me issues.

(But if the mini or an old X size ever got promotion. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm yes)

First impressions… I love this screen size. It feels natural coming from iPhone SE.

I definitely do notice the faintest hint of a migraine, and I can still visibly see flicker at times. However, it’s not quite as bad just yet having only used it for a few minutes. The display is also gorgeous and oddly a little more crisp and clear than iPhone 13 Pro.

Edit: I haven’t put it down just yet and like I said do notice the faintest hint of a migraine and a headache, but this may be my best PWM experience to date. Excited to continue testing. So far I love iPhone 13 Mini!

Exactly my experience too! ( except migraines. I just get the tiniest bit of forehead tightening from time to time though )

I really like this form factor. Once you get used to it it becomes so practical.

First observation: the 60Hz refresh rate under 15% brightness works better than the PWM of past. I still find I might have to raise the brightness slightly higher to prevent migraines. 15%-100% should have a rate of 510Hz, so I setup a 15% brightness Shortcut. It should be fairly simple to teach the auto-brightness if this works — consistency in rate/amplitude is one of the keys I’ve found to making it usable. Still not perfect, but an improvement.

Scratch that - I’m going to try using iPhone 13 Mini with auto-brightness working as intended for as long as I can tolerate it. I was already making plans to trade-in my iPhone SE: it’s definitely premature to make that decision. Thankfully I may be able to use this phone for a month, possibly even the entire holiday return window, instead of boxing it up after a few days like iPhone 13 Pro.

I don’t think there’s a clear consensus. There’s plenty of Samsung users complaining about the same thing on Samsung forums.

The only way to find out if an OLED iPhone will thrash your nervous system is to buy one with the clear intent on possibly having to return it within 14 days. If it hurts to use it, get rid of it.
That’s a luxury for developing countries as we cannot return our phones after we have purchased one. So, forums like this are a boon for us, the Global Southern folks.

You also had 13 pro and returned it ?

Yes, I’m having better luck so far with iPhone 13 Mini. iPhone 13 Pro was an improvement, but not enough so for me to be able to comfortably keep it.

I do have to say that I prefer the smaller size and don’t miss the stainless steel chassis. I might have to change my opinion to iPhone 13/iPhone 13 Mini being the better options for PWM-sensible users. PWM rates should be similar between iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Mini, yet I’m experiencing less PWM symptoms on the Mini. That may partially be attributable to the size. Somehow I’m watching MKBHD on YouTube at the lower brightness level with the 60Hz flicker rate and my migraines aren’t going crazy.

Excited to continue testing and providing additional feedback.

Well, the 13 Pro arrived this afternoon. I set it up and used it just like I would my 11. Not too much, just like I normally would. So far so good. Btw, I had been badly informed by the first Apple sales person: the holiday return policy applies to Apple products RECEIVED between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25. Not BOUGHT between that period. So I can - in theory - keep the 13 until January 8th. That said, when I got the X I only noticed after two days that it gave me headaches. I think with the 12 it was even longer than that. I shall report over the next few days.

So 13 pro was more difficult to your eyes compared to mini ? Did you try 12 pro ?
