Are you still using it?
Yep, I’ve had a couple of migraines but I can’t tell whether they’re from the phone. I’m on day 5 so going to keep trying it for another few days.

Edit to avoid double posting: Now on day 6 and I feel like if the 13 Pro is the cause of my migraines it’s only happening after hours of use. I’m on 9 hours of screen time today and I feel a migraine starting now. That’s a big improvement over the regular 13. I wonder can I keep persevering while still in the return window and see if I can get more used to it. Also 9 hours is excessive and not normal for me but in the past on my iPhone 11 it wouldn’t cause a migraine.

So it’s a lot better for you than iPhone 13 ? How it’s going ?

I used it for 9 hours yesterday and no migraine at all this time. So it definitely feels like I’ve either gotten used to it or the migraines I got last week weren’t caused by the phone. I have until Sunday to return it so if I’m migraine free for the next few days I’ll keep it.

I’m shocked at how well the Pro is going because the regular 13 affected me so quickly and severely.

Yeah also 13 mini was better than 13 for me. The funny thing with 13 was that issues started at day 3 not from beginning. So if you use 13 pro less than 9 hours you are issues free ? 9 hours of screen time is huge :)

I do miss my iPhone 13 Mini having had the return processed today. At the same time I’m still recovering from the headaches, and it frankly may take several weeks or even months to fully recover if iPhone X is an indication. I would keep trying iPhone 13 models hoping it culminates in a flagship device I can use but I mostly know better at this point.

When I developed painful chronic eye strain from staring at CRT monitors for years - it took YEARS for me to recover from that onslaught by migrating to LCD monitors.

Eyeball muscles can get thrashed straining them staring at crap screens and can take seemingly forever to recover (in my case)

Unfortunately 13 pro was even worse to me. Small signs of head pain and nausea from day one…. so my best experience with iPhone 13 line was with 13 mini.

13 mini > 13 > 13 pro

I’m going to try my luck with the 14 series. But only by trying out whatever my husband gets first. I’m not buying during launch, that’s for sure. I’ll wait until spring and not only will the special color be out by then (if Apple does that again) but the 15 rumors will also be out. I can get a better overview of what my best options are for my 13 Pro trade in.

I’m not thrilled with the possibility Apple is getting rid of the physical sim slot. I’m really not thrilled with any rumors of losing a charging port and going totally portless. I’m hoping the USB C rumors are true, though. A lot of my decision will be based on being able to stay with the physical sim slot and getting a USB-c port or at least keeping lightning.

This started to deteriorate in the past 4 days. I was getting so many migraines and I wasn’t sure it was the 13 Pro until I’d take my prescription migraine tablets and once the migraine was gone I’d pick up the 13 Pro and the migraine would come back within minutes.

So I switched back to my iPhone 11, took my migraine tablets and once the migraine was gone I used my 11 and no migraine.

The 13 Pro is going back to Apple. I really tried persisting with it but it’s not worth that level of pain. They were really horrible migraines that I don’t get often. Luckily today is the last day of my return window.

I’ll try an iPhone 14 later this year.

This can become a bit of a vicious cycle since I’m having issues with my iPhone SE where I’ll have to replace it, which is making me reconsider yet another iPhone 13 Mini.

My first iPhone 13 Mini was perfect besides the flicker. Admittedly I am glad that I returned the second unit since the display didn’t have the same excellent factory-calibrated white point.

While I’m glad a new iPhone SE exists, it’s like we have no options and the options we do have are going to result in either resentment or returns due to a compromised experience or migraines.

Accessibility option. Let’s do it so we no longer have to continue returning phones generation-over-generation. Now that I know what I’m missing and still have residual migraines anyway it’s becoming harder to hold onto iPhone SE. Of course if by some miracle I do purchase another iPhone 13 Mini this would end up being my last phone until iPhone 14.

Is there hope for us? Samsung Display shows a promovideo for future devices with his foldable or rollable OLED displays. The interesting think for us comes at 1:08 when they mention Flicker Free!

This means that Samsung Display could finally make progress on this problem :)

That is a big deal. While they seemingly glossed over it that shows that Samsung is also aware of the issue and is probably developing flicker-free OLED technology in response to clients like Apple.

It’s their QD OLED tech first introduced this year on their first OLED TVs and it’s already destroying LG OLEDs. Interesting

I think that they don`t want to make a big thing about it so long not many customers complain about it. With more pressure they would sure already deliver such a Flicker Free OLED Display for Smartphones.

Isn’t it curious that Samsung never ever mentioned a peep about the flickering of their OLED panels - as if it didn’t exist UNTIL they finally figured out how to get rid of it.

Now their new marketing spin is: Flicker Free OLED Display.

These companies will sell you toxic crap if they can
True, but no company chooses to makes changes that will increases costs until they have to. I think regulators are catching up in China, Japan and in some European countries as customers start to realise the links between their health and devices.

They used to sell us cigarettes saying they were good for us!

Petrol was better than diesel - now through refinement and engineering advancements, diesel and petrol can be very low polluting but no, scrap all that: electric vehicles are the future despite their huge carbon footprint. Burn that coal to make that electricity!

Wonderful news! I've felt so limited as all flagships have OLED and even cheaper Android phones.

Hope it comes soon so that I finally dare to spend more money on a phone again.

I prioritize my eye health as I'm already sensitive to light. Rarely uses maximum brightness except outdoors or in bright light. Indoors and in the evening I use very low brightness as it feels more comfortable to my eyes.

Man I really hope there's a flicker-free iphone at least in the next 5 years. I tested myself over the past couple days- switched back to my 13 pro just to make sure I wasn't just being a hypochondriac but even with 120hz turned off, white point adjusted, a blue light screen protector, and all the other PWM-lessening tweaks I still felt dizzy & headachy. I still have a good many years left with my SE3 and 8+, but I'm starting to get decently concerned that there will be no viable non-android options once those are both EOLed.

Apple must know at this point how widespread this issue is, and eventually they’ll be able to market a flicker-free display so everyone can upgrade from their iPhones that might have been thrashing their nervous systems.

I still think that it must be technically possible to some extent to create a flicker-free display controller for an OLED display now, and for whatever reason it’s being held back from production.

At least a foldable phone could be perfect in theory. The form factor of an iPhone Mini with the ability to transform into a Max for content consumption. ?

It is not about oled, oled as such can be flicker free - see oled tvs, i guess it is more about power consumption rather than oled tech constraints… however, just ordered iphone mini to test it… i find my pwm macbook pro 2019 just fine (i know that freq is much much higher, but there is still hope;) and i looove ip mini form factor. Ordered ipad air as well to use flicker free display at least at home:)

Good luck! I had issues with 12 mini, but 13 mini has worked out for me since October.

I had an iPhone X for more than a year with constant migraines and tons of money and time spent trying to find out why… I switched to the iPhone 11 and saw noticeable improvement… I still get migraines but not like before. The problem is my iPhone 11 is getting painfully slow, particularly when I’m trying to open the camera to catch a memorable moment and inevitably the moment is gone by the time I can finally take a picture like 10 seconds later. I’m really hoping to get a new iPhone soon but don’t know what I’ll do if the new iPhones still have this issue. I guess I’ll probably do what you did and try one in the fall and return it within the 14 day window if it still hurts.
