I haven’t seen an lcd for the 13 but ifixit sell’s one for the 12
Yeah I saw that. Not sure I want to go allllll the way back to a 12.

Although, Apple did make a white case back then, so maybe I could find a 12PM on Apple’s refurbished site. But still. Just don’t want to go back two generations, I don’t think.
 
I went to the Apple Store tonight. Here is a quick test I did with one of my favorite apps, Pulsation.

0 is perfect. 100 is the worst. The meter is only accurate when not moving your phone. (When the red icon in the lower left hand corner disappears.)

From the app's developer:

"Hello! These measurements will help you understand how large the ripple (flicker) coefficient is. Anything with a value above 10-15% has a high ripple. The higher the coefficient, the stronger the effect on eye fatigue and the general condition of the body. The data obtained will help to choose lamps without flicker."

Interesting. Can you explain this a bit more? What was different when it recorded 100? It seemed to stay in the yellow zone for a good bit before going crazy red: why?

It's definitely not a precise measuring tool, but it will give a rough estimate as to how bad PWM is. I have used this app to see how low frequency PWM light bulbs are as well as computer monitors, TVs, car infotainment displays, etc. It probably was jumping around because I moved it or some one bumped the table.

How did you turn on/off ProMotion? Was it off by default?
I don’t know. All my settings were copied over from my SE, which was copied from my iPhone 11, which was copied from my 13 Pro. 😅. So last November I must have turned it off on my 13 Pro. I’m sure I was desperately experimenting with settings trying to mitigate my pwm symptoms.

When it was on 60hz I could feel my brain going into potential seizure activity. That feels sort of like having two cups of coffee working on me. I’m strictly a one cup in the morning gal. I’ll sometimes have one later in the day but usually one will suffice to wake me up. I’m pretty sensitive to caffeine.

I’m on Pro Motion now and it all seems to be fine. I’m just trying to adjust finding the best reading angle for my glasses.

At least with the way it’s set now I can’t see the flicker like I can with some of these OLEDs.

It’s a good phone. My mom’s assisted living coordinator called me on it and I got good connectivity even in a grocery store with only a couple of bars of 5G. The 5G didn’t eat through my battery like it does on my other 5 G phones. So far I’m liking this new modem. I’m only mentioning this stuff because I fully intend to keep this phone as an actual phone and as a camera.

If I can doom scroll on it, yay. If not, I seem able to at least use it for texts and emails.

If necessary most everything else can still be done on one of my other phones or my iPad. I can take the sim out of my S22 Ultra and put it in the SE, for example.

The only phone that absolutely has to go is my 13 Pro. Even that one, I would have made it work if the camera had been up to my standards. I find myself annoyed by this camera too sometimes. But I’m still getting the hang of it. At least it’s not pokey this time.

Okay, it looked like the 14Pro was better than the 14?

Also, what was going on when it was 100%? Were you zoomed in? Seemed like a lot of vertical stripes oscillating horizontally.

And most importantly...is this good news? Bad news? Hard to say news?

I feel ya on the caffeine sensitivity. I am allergic to caffeine. Even a sip of coffee can send me into anaphylactic shock.

This is what the app does:
The application will help you choose a lamp, monitor or laptop with a screen without pulsations.

A high coefficient of pulsation can affect fatigue, well-being and eye strain.


The application allows you to measure the ripple coefficient of radiation sources in the visible spectrum:

- LED, halogen, fluorescent lamps and incandescent lamps

- various lamps

- LCD and LED monitors and TVs


The readings are not 100% reliable and the average error depending on the light source and the frequency of pulsation can be more than 10%.


In order to take measurements, you need to bring the phone to the measured source and press the start button. The measurement results will be updated in real time, the arrow will show the ripple factor, and the scale will be filled from green to red. For best results, keep your phone straight. If the phone is not fixed, an image of the shaking device will appear in the lower left corner of the screen and the readings will be very different from the actual ones.

Folks, all I can say is that if you look at the two videos I posted, I personally do not want to stare at a display that is producing that kind of output. I'll leave it at that. Sticking with my iPhone SE 3.

Funny (?) story about flickering:

I took my 11 to slo-mo film the 14PM and saw flickering not on the screen but radiating out around my phone. Weird, right? So I try it at a couple different brightness settings. Same thing each time. Feeling a little bummed.

Then I slo-mo film the 11 with the 14PM to see how much better it can be--same flickering!

In a flicker--pun absolutely intended!--I realized the flicker was coming from the lamp in the room!

(I know the lamp flickers. That's a whole other story. (Love California for a lot of things, but really wish they'd stop limiting our lights bulbs to the kind that flicker.))

But GOOD NEWS: didn't see any flickering on the 14PM. Know others have reported it, but I thought I'd pile on because it's a nice pile.

Though yes, I did see the diagonal lines scrolling vertically. Don't love that. Still experimenting with how they affect me.

Hey have you used that app on your SE3? I'd be curious what that looked like. Know it shouldn't have PWM, but just curious how the app needle might move about.

Yes, I have tried it from another phone. iPhone SE (3rd gen, and all others) returns a "0" and absolutely no "PWM bars" show at all (because there is no PWM).

One thing to note on my two videos from earlier... when both were at full brightness, the base iPhone 14 seemed to get better scores than the iPhone 14 Pro. I thought that was strange. Some people may have better luck with the base iPhone 14, based on that data.

Can you measure normal iPhone 13 to compare it with 14 ?

I am going back to the Apple Store tomorrow, so I will try to measure as many as I can with the app. Again, this is not a precise tool, but it should generally give an idea. I would look toward NotebookCheck's measurements for more reliable data.

Damn. If accurate Apple is finally making headway into solving PWM.

Oddly I might be getting along better with my iPhone 14 Pro Max than my 14” MacBook Pro with Mini-LED display and a 14,880Hz PWM rate.

It’s still getting exhausting since this thread probably won’t get retired until iPhone is flicker-free again or rates reach over 100,000Hz where they’re barely measurable.

No need to hold hope here. Unfortunately, it’s not a priority for OEMs. Holding onto my 11 till iPhone 20. 😡 (Possible Micro LED)
