Yep. Once Apple goes OLED on the iPads (my favorite Apple product) that may be the nail in the coffin for me and Apple unfortunately…and I’ve used Apple products since the original Mac and the Apple IIe.
Ironically I’ve been waiting for Apple to add OLED to every device to upgrade again. Just. Make. It. Flicker. Free.

After one day of use, my first impressions are not good! I have "brain fog" / disorientation.

Consider that I use without problems: iPhone X (ios 14, I am scared to update), pixel 4a and Samsung A52.

I will try to adapt in the next week otherwise, I will return it and come back with my iPhone X which still works very well.

I saw that. I particularly liked the comment that says we’re all dying over the PWM on MacRumors.

The PWM rate must be around 480Hz or even 960Hz for it not to get picked up on the iPhone slo-mo.
Agreed, it's likely cleanly divisible by 60 so that the slo-mo camera isn't picking it up.

Was the comment in the video or in the comments?

Lol. Found it:

In the comments.

I like that Zollotech mentions PWM in every review and he’s fortunate that it doesn’t bother him anymore, but as a result he’s not quite providing accurate information. There is definitely no DC dimming on these devices.

Haven't seen @TDDM around here for a while either.

The nice thing about iPhone 13 mini is that it's small, so less overall PWM to worry about. :D
Yeah, I see where you're going with this, but I'm thinking when I'm driving down the street and some cruel cyclist is using a tiny strobe to let us know he's there, I want to scream--your strobe is gonna make me crash!

I've been using iPhone 14 now for almost 2 hours straight.

Settings:
  • Highest brightness
  • Auto brightness off
  • Reduce white point at 80%
  • Dark mode enabled
So far, I am honestly not sure. I can say I don't have a headache or migraine or anything specific I can point to, but I do feel a bit off. (Could just be neck muscles being tense.) Of course, if I stared at my iPhone SE (2022) for 2 straight hours, I would probably feel the same way. I'm going to keep using it and give final feedback tomorrow, but I am not sure I'll be able to provide any meaningful data.

Aside from eye-strain, in general, this phone is amazing! I love how much lighter it is (weight) than iPhone 14 Pro. Everything about it is great. I think it'll be useable for me as long as I don't use it for long periods of time.
Wow.

First, glad you made it back okay.

And, darn it, now I'm looking to see if there is a 14 available for pick-up.

Brand new video from Zollotech. This time it's a review of the iPhone 14 Pro not the pro max. He talks about PWM at 11 minutes

I'm not surprised by the lack of flicker, since I found that in my own slo-mo tests of the 13P/M and 14P/M, but in this video I don't even see any oscillating black bars trailing down the screen either???

Okay, just checked my videos again. Noticed a couple things:

1. When the slo-mo video first starts, it's at a more normal pace, right? That's when I see the bars most strongly; then as it slows, less. Which would suggest that our eyes normally are picking up on the bars???

2. It's still one of those 'better at full brightness' and 'worse the lower the brightness' ...Again, I feel like I'm trying to make this work. I don't love phones at full brightness.

I just saw that. Feel like I want to give a shout-out: 👋🏻

Well Zollotech isn't going to be a source to go to for PWM info moving forward. He filmed the home screen at one brightness and said he can't see it. OK? Well if you reduced the brightness on a white screen there are plenty of bars to see, but I would agree there is very little flicker on slow mo.

But maybe this whole PWM focus isn't really the issue but actually a combination of software/hardware choices Apple has made. I struggled with the iphone 11 and M1 ipad Pro 12.9". 🤷‍♂️

Wow. That's amazing. For many of us, the X was the worst. Good luck!!!

And I can use the 11 but did not do well with the M1 iPP. These results are making some crazy data.

Guys, i've just received iPhone 14 Pro yesterday, and after a 5-10mins using it I was feeling so bad, I was having nausea and after few mins more was having a vertigo. I put the iphone down till the evening and was still feeling so bad until a got to bed and in the morning I was feeling okay. So after i woke up i tried to do something with iphone again for a 1-2mins and was feeling instantly so bad. I'm using latest macbook pro with M1 and ipad pro, nothing bad with it. I also have iPhone 11 pro and its okay for me, as I know its also OLED. I just returned this damn iphone 14 back. I'm still feeling not okay for today. Started to read about PWM and OLED ****, looks like its happening only with new iphones starting iPhone 12. I tried iphone 12 pro when it was released, and had mild symptoms, but also returned it next day after it was released. Looks like i'm not the only one who experience the same problem.

Despite the new displays and display engines on the Pro lineup, Apple did put the best PWM rates on its standard lineup last year—and that may be the case again.

The good news is that if iPhone 14 is developed with a higher PWM rate then it’s the most immediately-available new iPhone. iPhone 14 Plus on the other hand doesn’t come out until next month. Regardless, we’ll probably have to write another generation off and send feedback to Apple.

Welcome to our pained club.

Well, I think I can summarize the past few days posts by saying…looks like another year with the iPhone 11.

Thanks to everyone that took one for the team and tried again this year. I hope you all recover quickly. :(

My recommendation:
1. The stock market is down quite a bit for this year which makes it a good buy right now. Take the money intended for this year’s iPhone and purchase a few shares of VTI or VOO (or any other fund of your choosing)…or even APPL if you haven’t completely lost faith.
2. ???
3. Profit

The one thing I dont understand. I dont have any problems with iPhone 11 Pro, which is also OLED, could someone explain to me why?
I’m not either right now with the 11 pro (bought used a month ago) while the 12 mini gave me returnable pain, the 13 mini eye discomfort that was tolerable and i just was able to ignore it after a few weeks.

I want you guys to imagine Eminem's song "Without Me" playing in the background.

"Guess who's back... (back back)... back again..."

And now I want you to picture my iPhone SE (2022) walking back into the room with sunglasses on.

Jokes aside, I switched back. I won't ever be purchasing a phone that uses PWM again.

My experience with iPhone 14 initially seemed OK, but I had the strangest feeling in my head that I cannot really explain. It was almost like the muscles in my head and back of my neck were mildly on fire, if that makes any sense. At the end of the day, like many others here, I knew this was going to be the end result. No use in fighting or forcing it.

Best of luck to everyone who is hoping they can make one of these new OLED iPhones work, but I think it's wasted effort at this point.

That’s awful. Sorry it didn’t work for you. Thanks for trying it.

I’m going to keep trying with my 14 Pro for a few more days.
