After sleeping on it, I've decided to just use the XR for another year and put all this behind me. It gets the job done well enough so I'm sure it has another year in it. I've put enough energy into the hunt for this year. Hopefully by next year, we have some other options that work for us. Thing is, I was going to get a new Apple Watch and iPad this year to replace my aging devices along with the new phone since I've waited so long, but now that I'm sticking with the XR, I'm less inclined to do so. Having people like us skip out on iPhones every year trickles down to the rest of the ecosystem sales I'm sure. They really need to fix this.

Tangential question:

Do you have other sensitivities? Food, light, sound, scent, taste, touch (think I got all the senses there), proprioceptive, seasonal, empathetic…

For example, I’m sensitive to all those things listed to different degrees, including an anaphylactic reaction to caffeine.

Just wondering if we’re the canaries in the coal mine for techie stuff or for more?
Yes. Lol.

I’m sensitive to light. I once blacked out when a coworker wore a certain perfume. Oddly enough I used to wear the same perfume myself. She might have had a counterfeit version though.

I don’t know what proprioceptive and empathetic are. I do have seasonal allergies.

As for my 14 Pro Max and I…we seem compatible! There is some eye strain but it’s the normal kind I get on any device since the 1980’s.

One dilemma I have that the rest of you all here don’t have is that the LCD displays were apparently the cause of a visual defect I suffered with for the past year. That’s the white shimmer that was taking over my left eye. It’s gone now. It shrank immediately when I started using this phone and now it’s gone.

So if I don’t use my 14 Pro Max and try to go back to my 11 or SE 3, that shimmer might come back. :(

It doesn’t hurt but it’s annoying and I don’t know what it is or why it’s just in one eye. I am going to try and get that checked out regardless. Normally a shimmer like that just in one eye may indicate a pituitary tumor. My dad had had a relatively benign one. I suppose it’s not out of the question for me. Wish me luck getting an appointment. Right now I’m juggling appointments for my mom and one of the kids and my long standing ones for my autoimmune condition (affects connective tissue, skin and digestive).

I’m sorry to hear of a lot of you struggling with the 14 series phones. What a bummer. I’m still undecided myself.

Is anybody keeping their 14 or 14 Pro for sure?

I’m just curious because it seems like almost everybody is returning them. That could go for me as well I just haven’t made that leap yet.

I just returned my 14PM. I was really torn as to whether or not I would simply get used to the relatively mild symptoms that I felt from using it, but after two completely normal days back on the 11 I am convinced returning is the way to go for me. My eyes don’t feel strained, the low level headache is gone, no sporadic motion sickness. I am also realizing that I was a bit cranky over the past week, feeling and acting more agitated than normal. I have no idea if that was a product of the way the phone was making me feel, or if I was just anxious about the decision itself. Either way, I feel back to myself, and that means a lot.

The sales rep handling the return insisted that my symptoms would go away if I added a blue light filter screen protector. Oh, if it were only that simple…

I can relate to that. It's draining both physically and mentally dealing with these phones and that's really a shame. What's supposed to be an exciting experience turns into frustration as another year goes by with no cares given, once again, by Apple to the PWM sensitive crowd.

That sales rep's reply is a perfect example. It's just not seen as a real issue. I'm convinced most people think this is just in our heads and we are crazy because they love OLED so much, and they would prefer it be used in every electronic device on the planet.

Maybe try updating your watch and/or iPad anyway. I’ve been seeing it as I can’t enjoy the latest phones so I play more with other Apple tech and use those more and differently. Just a thought.

…and because of that I have multiple iPads and watched that I enjoy tremendously!

I’m with you. Still debating on the 14P.

Funny thing is that, while waiting for the return, I spoke with another customer about my experience and he said his wife has had migraines lately, and he’s now wondering if the phone is the source. I think this impacts more folks than we realize. So come on, health-focused Apple — do something about this health related issue!

Seriously. Just took a screenshot of your post and sent it to my boyfriend that said “does this sound like me?”

I have Post Concussion Syndrome that has slowly improved but inevitably regresses at times. Since my current symptoms don’t flare up WHEN I use the phone, I don’t know whether they’re related. Since stress exacerbates my PCS, I can’t discern what’s PCS, what’s phone-related, and what’s because I’m so freaking overthinking this phone decision. It all sounds stupidly obvious: why get a phone that can cause problems if you already have head issues? But I can rationalize anything and freak myself out of a lot.

I think I feel like a scared failure if I return the phone. How messed up is that.

I went on a tangent about this in the thread about the 14 PM being rated best screen again. I'm in total agreement with you that some people are negatively impacted and don't even realize it because, maybe for them, it's mild and builds over time so it goes unnoticed as being caused their mobile device. OLED is so standard now that most people likely wouldn't even consider it as the cause since the problem gets so little coverage.

I returned my 14PM but I do plan to try it again during the extended holiday return window. In the meantime, I am starting to see a chiropractor regularly to address my neck issues that give me headaches. If I can get my body right by the time that window opens, and don’t have the 14 day return window to worry about, I think I’ll personally be in a much better place to make a rational and educated decision.

I can’t make headway if I’m having anxiety and physical symptoms similar to PWM, before I even power the new phone on. I don’t get as bad as some others with PWM so I’m left wondering, which is the culprit? Or both?

I had eye strain using my 11 last night. I told my wife to make a mental note of that. While I’ve been good on the 11 the past few years, I think I need to acknowledge that my eyes aren’t always comfortable. Anywayyyyyyy, if my daily pain and strain is healed by that return window I am giving it another try.

Did anyone try a privacy or matte screen protector. I know that these can just make things a bit better and might be the last push we need?

Haven't tried one yet. I actually almost ordered the Belkin one on the Apple website. But I saw it wasn't glass and a film instead. I detest non-glass screen protectors that are a film. At least I did in the day. Maybe they've improved.

Does anyone know of a good anti-reflective glass screen protector? My search did not yield much.

This is what I decided last year when I wanted to buy the 13 Pro but had a horrible experience with it. Was really hoping I wouldn’t have to keep my XR going for yet another year, but Apple really isn’t doing anything to help at the moment. I pray the rumoured SE next year has an LCD display. That’s literally all I want from an iPhone now…

Good question
We need feedbacks from those who kept it .. anybody has a problem with the previous lineups and then didn't face the issue with the new Iphone ?
Maybe I missed it, but I don't recall one single person saying that they were going to definitely keep their 14 or 14 pro.

First of all, sorry about your aches and pains. I was in a car crash in 2015 and took me a while to recover.Lots of chiropractic & physical therapy.
Matter of fact, I don't recall any phone sensitivities to screens before that car wreck in which I did have whiplash and a minor concussion.. Hmmm

Anyway, I'm bouncing back between my 14 that I'm evaluating and my trusty 11. I also am not sure what I'm experiencing when I get back on the 11. I think that if the 11 screen felt really really good this decision would've been made already and the 14 would've been headed back towards Apple.

However, it doesn't feel like I remember it.
So that just muddies the waters.

Just got back from the Apple store and returned the 14 Pro but they refused to let me return the 14 Pro case. Said it was past the 14 day return window since it was delivered three days before the iPhone 14 Pro. So even though they were on the same order and I couldn't use the case until I had the phone, they refused to take it back. So now I'm stuck with a case I can't use for a phone that made me feel ill. Even asked nicely to speak with the supervisor and they told me I was out of luck as well. So much for that Apple customer service you used to get. I know it's a small thing but it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

UPDATE - Just called Apple's customer service number and they were more than happy to accommodate the return by mail. So I'm not sure what the problem was in the store. Seems like such a stupid thing to fight the customer over. Doing it by phone was five mins and done. They completely understood why I would want to return the case with the phone I can't use. You know, because that's logical, haha.

Basically, Apple didn't do anything wrong. If you're past the 14 days, you're past it. You can't blame Apple for that. Just sell it and live with the loss. Being mad at Apple is not appropriate in this case.

I get it and they ended up making it right when I called Apple customer support. They completely understood where I was coming from since they were on the same order and were very friendly. The store was just being difficult. I wasn't asking for anything unreasonable and I was very polite about it. I guess I'm just not used to Apple being difficult like that so it was surprising to me. I usually have great service at that store since I also do some of the corporate purchasing. I think it was a just an off day in the store. Probably because of a lot of returns from people like me, haha.

I'd normally agree but Apple stores do have discretion and as the accessory was purchased as part of the same order to be used with the returned item, they could easily have dealt with it.

I always thought it was strange that they sent accessories ahead of launch day thus creating a larger carbon footprint with two packages and deliveries when they are so "green". Then to treat them as having different return periods is problematic.

Personally I only buy accessories once I know I'm keeping a product.

Indeed, I will remember not to order the accessories with the phone next time. Especially knowing we are rolling the dice when trying out OLED. Lesson learned! And yeah, it was totally on me for missing the window but the fight they put up was very out of character for Apple. But the "Apple hotline" took care of it so all good. Still, someone needs to give the staff in that store a hug.

Apple is making me eat my words. I just got a call from a manager while on a conference call so I let it go to voicemail. She was just calling to apologize for the return issue and gave me a direct number if I have any other problems or concerns. I only casually mentioned on the call with customer service that I had some challenges in the store but didn't make a thing out of it. The rep must have asked a manager to reach out as follow up. So, that's darn impressive! Total turn around, haha.

My experience is definitely better. Each year it’s better. Each year less flicker and the more I can tolerate it.

To illustrate, my boyfriend traded in his 12P for a 14P. Just two weeks ago, with the 12P, I would ask him to turn over his phone or turn it away from me if he was using it because the [unseen] flickering bothered me. Hurt like someone flicking on and off a light in your eyes. Since he’s had the 14P, I haven't asked him once, haven’t noticed any issue once. A couple of times I’ve looked over and been like wow that doesn’t bother me.

So maybe it’s not all better. But I think it’s getting better.
