yes of course ist flickers, but I think with a higher rate than the 13 mini.
I made this video because someone here in thread said that the iPhone14 pro has only a pwm rate of 240 Hz.
But that can’t be true.
The 13 mini has 520HZ according to notebookcheck. IP14Pro must be higher than this.
Notebookcheck themselves lists the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max as being 240 Hz but many of us have been skeptical of that figure.

It's frustrating that notebookcheck is still our go to for little PWM detail. We really need a review site that is focused on this issue with more detailed testing reports and techniques.

If I knew how you get the "in" with the phone manufacturers to get review units I'd be tempted, but I suspect once I found my holy grail flagship phone without PWM eye strain I'd quickly lose interest. 😅

This issue, for those who are affected, is being discussed across the internet but it's spotty and all over the place on various platforms. Even then you get blasted by comedians who challenge what is said at every opportunity. Without some solid science to backup our experiences, these problems will remain forever. Mini-led is not the fix and I suspect micro-led won't be either.

Okay @jimmy_uk, to talk you off this ledge, I'm going to mention one thing only: your own words.

"I am concerned about security."

If you won't use a phone because it could hurt you physically--as you are wise to decide--do you really want to choose to use a phone that makes you feel unsafe in other ways?

Would you move to a nice flat in a sketchy neighborhood? Tell yourself I'll just buy extra locks and not go outside? Or only go out in light and be super vigilant?

Maybe you would, maybe you would be happy. And you can absolutely choose that later, but maybe right now you can just feel that frustration and disappointment that you feel because of Apple. What you're feeling is very real, so feel it. And later make a decision that can affect your safety.
Mmmm, reading the issues regarding Samsung batteries swelling today has certainly given me pause. 🔥

I’m returning my 14 pro tomorrow. I had a 13 pro previously and a 12 mini before that.

Undecided between se 2022 or 13 mini. Thinking se. Wish I’d never sold my 8 plus 256gb red ☹️
I know that feel. Traded in my beautiful Space Gray 8 Plus for a purple 11, and then traded that one in for a black iPhone 12 (my first with OLED), which was an expensive lesson I would eventually learn…but not before I tried with a green 13 mini (perhaps the prettiest iPhone I’ve ever owned, just cannot stand the OLED). Now I can’t wait to go back to that heritage form factor and LCD with a Starlight SE.

This makes it seem as if the 14 Pro doesn't flicker. It does. If you use a higher fps camera you can clearly see it.
A logical explanation is that a 240Hz rate aligns with the 240Hz slo-mo.

Logically it does seem like iPhone 14 Pro Max has a rate of 480Hz or higher as many of us are doing better with it than with previous generations. We would have to wait for a full review for an elaboration on the PWM, as 240Hz is even quite possibly a misprint—although maybe amplitudes are just better.

The most logical step would be to wait for a flicker-free brightness controller and stop wasting so much energy on this, which it does feel like in retrospect after five years.

Let me preface this photo by saying the 11 LOOKS terrible compared to the 14P, I know. (took photo with an 8, if that matters) Both screens looks way better not in this photo, but especially the 11. (It's almost like the 11 isn't photogenic.)

My point in sharing is that this is the brightness I normally and very comfortably use the 11. And this is the 14P at full brightness with RWP at 90% so it doesn’t flicker at me. (Outside, different story.) This might be the biggest reason I keep going back to my 11 indoors. And has me clawing the walls about whether to return the 14P.

Well, I have certainly made my situation even worse. Last night I go to the Apple store (1hr 20min drive one way) for a 6:15 battery replacement and return on the 14PM. No one talks to me after check-in until 7:05. They run diagnostics on my 11 and at 7:15 decide to move forward with my battery replacement request. By the time I sign all the wavers, I am then told I may not get my phone until the following day (today) which was a concern because I had to go to OHare airport from there and didn't know the way. Well, I end up getting my 11 back with the new battery, and returning the PM, at 8:10 and am hurried out the doors as all the cleaning people are prepping the close.

I get home at 1:30 in the morning after grabbing my buddy from the airport in Chicago. I look at my phone and notice pixel damage on the screen that must have happened during the replacement of the battery. So, now I have a defective screen and today I find I am not getting all of my text messages. In the grand scheme of life, this is a grain of salt compared to real life problems. But from a pettiness perspective, it REALLY sucks going from the perfect phone for me (sans PWM) to a now defective 11. Back to Apple I go on Friday. Anyone else over this PWM bullish? Just me lol?

There should be a DC dimming mode within Accessibility settings by now.

I was looking at buying an external OLED monitor on Amazon last night, and most claim to utilize DC dimming:

It’s certainly possible, but Apple doesn’t incorporate it probably out of long-term display performance concerns.

Ah, I hadn't seen this- so perhaps 14 Pro is worse than 13 Pro? The 13 Pro is over 400 Hz according to Notebookcheck, and it is super easy on my eyes. I've had my 14 Pro for a week now and it's not bad, but there is just a slight "bite" I feel in my eyes when using it that isn't there with the 13 Pro. I can't even determine what it is- or if I will get used to it in time.

I have brightness up to 80%- 90%, and I set reduce white point to 96%. I have tried adjusting these just a bit, but don't want to bring brightness down much lower knowing that the flicker is worse at any lower settings- I do notice that even on my 13 Pro.

I will decide here in the next day or so if I'll keep the 14 Pro, or return it and go back to the 13 Pro (that I still love and have not yet sold)

Yeah, it's clear as mud at the moment. Not that you asked but my vote would be stick with the 13 Pro if your eyes get along with it. Plus, then you have even more reason to upgrade next year!

You know, the more I look into the SE, the more attractive it becomes. I'm a light user and I always felt the XR was just a bit too big but I never complained because Apple was giving me an LCD in the iPhone X updated design style. But the reality is, I probably should have moved over to the SE back in 2020. I held out with the larger than preferred XR for so many years in hopes of OLED being usable, but I'm just tired of this big phone. Especially after holding my friends 14 the other day. It felt downright light compared to my XR with the case. You forget how chonky it is with those big ol' bezels around the screen, haha. Yes, the SE with it's beautiful rounded sides, TouchID, compact size and beloved LCD is calling to me. Plus, Apple makes a leather case for it. They never made one for the XR and I'm still upset about it.

Crikey. That was totally an anecdote about life kicking a man when he’s down. Sorry to hear all that.

And no you’re not the only one over this PWM and phone $#!^. So over. It’s messing too much with me and the rest of my life. Over. It.

Hope Friday goes better for you.

Tell me about it. I have two flickering displays currently messing with my life.

It will be a pain if I have to sell my 14" MacBook Pro, which I didn't expect to cause any issues and shouldn't have been so persistent about keeping even if I knew I was only using it for a couple of hours per day and spent half the time distracting myself with music. I suppose the design and unboxing experience oddly made me want to keep it hoping that it would be fine outside of the return window, against reason. It's the same logic that almost made me keep iPhone 13 Mini thinking that if I had to use it maybe it would be fine.

There may be a world where I can keep an iPhone this generation if I'm willing to put up with some degree of headaches, but I'm also slightly more optimistic about next year.

Another point - every day I own these products compels me to go somewhere to post about experiencing headaches from the flickering, whereas I could move on if I no longer had them.

Yeah. What he said.

Excitingly and frustratingly, Samsung finally released an OLED television. It takes an innovative approach using Quantum dot color filters to deliver brighter colors than OLED can typically produce, but that's not the most exciting part.

I'm ecstatic since it may finally be the time when I could see an upgrade coming from my Pioneer KURO.

I'm frustrated since like LG's OLED television there's no PWM.

The Samsung S95B isn't technically flicker-free, as there's a small decrease in brightness that corresponds with the refresh cycle of the display. This is very different from pulse width modulation flicker (PWM) on TVs with LED backlights, and it's not noticeable. This dip isn't even always there, and the display is flicker-free in the following modes:

  • PC Mode: only with the brightness at max
  • Dynamic Mode: brightness above 20
  • Standard Mode: brightness above 48
  • Game Mode: brightness above 25
It is doubly annoying since I've been waiting for this type of display on Apple devices for over a decade, and this level of display quality is my reason to upgrade--it just looks so much better. HBO Max finally added HDR and 4K to its web app, and content looks equally amazing on the MacBook Pro's Mini-LED if not even more so than on iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Besides the headaches, a lack of flicker also makes the display look significantly better in my opinion. But we shouldn't have to be telling Apple this for the past few years, to no true avail.

For me it is the case that I apparently tolerate a constant frequency. The iPhone 12 Pro has a constant frequency of 60Hz from a certain brightness. I have no problems with the iPhone 12 Pro. My Samsung Mini LED TV has a constant frequency of 120Hz in my settings, and I have no problems. I now hope that the iPhone 14 Pro Max also has a constant frequency in certain areas. But I don't believe in it, and I will have to send it back. But I still want to test it. If I had not tested the iPhone 12 Pro, I would still be on the iPhone 11. Fortunately, the iPhone 12 Pro gets at least 4 iOS versions, so that you can still use it for 5 years. A lot can still happen in these 5 years. My hope is micro LED without PWM.

I ve been using permanently and for the first time reduce white point at 30% from yesterday and it has already improved my 11 usage. Letters tend to bloom without reduce white point. Now the display is even more sharp.
