So if you don't have eye problems or other discomfort, you definitely won't have neck tension.
If you don't have any tension behind your eyes or in your head in general, it's definitely not coming from your iPhone.
I've never heard that it's just the neck that's tense. Eye pain or discomfort is always part of it

That is what has me confused. My eyes are fine.

iPhone 15 Plus is so much better for me than past OLED iPhones that I’m seriously considering either keeping it or trying iPhone 15 with the intention of keeping that.

There’s still sensitivity and occasional light migraines/tension headaches, but this is the first time that I could note a meaningful improvement for myself personally where it’s not constant behind-the-eye throbbing.

iPhone 15 looks the best here:

The base model iPhones take a significantly different approach than the Pro iPhones, which appear similar to all past generations. Meanwhile, the flickering appears distinctively different on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus than any iPhone in slo-mo to this point.

Don't get paranoid.
If you have no headache, no eye pain, and no discomfort,
so it's really just neck pain, then it's definitely not from the OLED display.
I've never read that before, and you shouldn't blame all complaints on the OLED display.
As I said, without headaches, eye pain, discomfort, the neck pain is more likely to have another reason.

As @PwmMen said, Honor Magic 6 and 6 Pro will have PWM frequency of 4320Hz.

Let's see if some analysis comes out, and we can see from what brightness that high PWM is applied.

gsmarena_001.jpg

You have all the information here in Chinese:

And here in English:

Honor is touting 1,800 nits of peak brightness in auto mode and up to a whopping 5,000 (five-thousand!) nits of local peak brightness for HDR content.
If you want to melt your eyes, test our new screens in the sun 😎

Why would anyone need or want to be blinded by the HDR highlights on their smartphone? Solving flickering should be a much greater priority than raising the max brightness to impossible levels.

3 months ago i posted that i tested out the iPhone 13, 15 and 15 Pro here:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/eye-strain-while-using-iphone-x-and-up.2085427/post-32601757

2 days ago i got a iphone 15 Pro Max as i read the screen is better for the eyes and i can confirm that to be true. I dont feel the symptoms usually assocaitoned with OLED. Ive been on the iPhone 11 for years and im finally feeling i can use the new iphone. Ive 3 hour face time calls each day. A definite difference over the iphone 15 pro. But pro motion has to be turned off. If I leave it on then symptoms are a problem. Just turning pro motion off is whats needed for me. Didn't alter white point.

on a side note i was worried the max would be too big. Never had a max/plus before. But to my pleasant suprise the width of the iphone 15 pro max and a iphone 11 with official apple silicone cases are the same width give or take a centimeter.

Slightly unrelated.

Does anyone know what I might expect the Apple watch 9 or Ultra version 1 to come with as loaded IOS?

Due to not being able to tolerate IOS17 on my Iphone 11 I need an apple watch with IOS9 as IOS10 wouldnt pair.

Leave the 120Hz on and you'll get used to it.
I first took it off and then turned it on at some point. After 2-3 days I got used to it.
I now even find the 120Hz to be more pleasant than the 60Hz on the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

So you had better experience with pro max over 15 pro ?

Absolutely
Way better than iPhone 15? I tried watching a YouTube video on iPhone 15 Plus for one last test, and I got light migraines eight minutes into a twenty-minute video. Not to say it was entirely comfortable the rest of the time. It does still feel antiquated going back to iPhone SE, although it’s not all that bad.

The success rate with iPhone 15 Pro Max seems to be higher, with more PWM-sensitive users oddly able to use it than not, at least on MacRumors, but I’m not convinced that it would work for me based on data and store experiences.

Also, who has the record for PWM-related returns? I’ve ‘only’ tested two iPhones this generation, and entirely skipped two OLED generations after iPhone X. I want to be somewhat mindful considering the outcome could be no iPhones being successful.

Yeah, after the iPhone X about killed me, I didn't touch another OLED iPhone until the 15. I tried the 15 Plus, and although it was better than the X, it still gave me eye strain, so I took it back and had to pay like a $30 restocking fee for my troubles, but yeah, wouldn't want to do that on a yearly basis.

I skipped the 11, 12. Tested the 13 pro and 13 mini. Skipped 14. Tested 15 and 15 pro and returned both.

Kept the 13 pro as my missus wanted it

Kept the 13 mini as a spare.

I’m probably at near the top of our group with this series. But I’ll say this. I feel I’m a pretty ethical guy both as a person and in the work that I do. I’m not losing sleep over returning and trying phones that Apple is charging me $1,000+ to buy, is a trillion dollar company, and seemingly doesn’t give a single **** about PWM and it’s impacts. I don’t bat an eye in this process anymore and it’s not like the guys at the Apple Store care. They’re collecting a check and nothing more. I have 3 days to mail back this Pro Max. That still could happen.

Came across an article on TrustedReviews about PWM dimming: What is PWM Dimming? The smartphone screen tech explained

Reading it, you have to wonder, is there some counter messaging going on?

This is an article from Jan 2 this year.

PWM dimming is screen technology that’s being introduced to more and more smartphones
While the idea of a smartphone screen that helps reduce eye fatigue and irritation may sound a little nebulous, PWM dimming tech aims to do exactly that.
🤔
Therefore, PWM Dimming is a display tech that’s framed as being much healthier for the user’s eyes
🤔 🤔

OK, the author does at some point mention that higher PWM is better, and that more manufacturers are providing higher PWM rates these days. But you have to wonder how the above sentences get into that article.

The SE3. Every now and then I get the mini out and think about making it my main phone - the screen is just not comfortable enough even with max brightness and reduced white point. Afraid it will give me the horrible headaches and nausea that I got from the X.

This is going to sound stupid I realize but I have to ask and you’re the only group I trust to ask. Do you think it is possible to experience back neck aches, almost tension like with with muscles on the side and back of the neck as a result of these screens?

I know my neck is jacked up but not kidding I swear when I get on this phone, that area starts bothering me. Badly. But I cannot see 😝 how pwm would impact that area. It must be coincidental right? There does feel like tightness at the base of my skull as well. The rest of my head is fine without headache or pain.

I'm kinda late to this but I think I'm getting the same thing. Didn't notice it until this week though since I'm not normally on my phone very much, but on monday I was staring at it for a good hour while I waited on my mom at the doctor. I actually felt it the moment a tension headache set in about 30 mins into the waiting/phone-ing, and the headache has lasted until today. I'm still feeling a bit of lightheadedness and vertigo. I can't help but wonder if my phone caused it. Ugh. Of course, I would notice a problem a week after my return period expired 😖

I'm gonna try switching back to my SE and recreating the conditions to see if it happens again. Almost hope it does just so I don't have to face yet another disappointment with a new phone that I thought was okay.
