I fear my journey with Apple must come to an end with my iPhone 11. As I cannot use any OLED iPhone and now the iPads ARE going the way of OLED, serious consideration has to be turned into action and an Android future is in play.

I had wanted to give one last roll of the dice and try an iP15 Plus + iPad 10 but I know the 15 Plus will get to me within hours/days and the iPad 10, even if it works, is entry level and it wont be long before I will need to revisit the phone and tablet upgrades. Everything Apple makes will eventually be OLED only and it's clear they (Samsung) are not addressing the eye strain issues. Also, there is no way I'm dropping £2k on a MBA 15" if I'm leaving the Apple Ecosystem. I've always said the phone is the linch pin.

The HONOR Magic6 Pro looks like the first real contender for consideration. I didn't want to get a Chinese phone let alone an Android device, but here I am with very few options.

Before I risk £900 buying direct from Honour, has anyone trialled this phone and have any feedback?

There’s no rush at the moment to replace your 11. I’m using an iPhone 6S Plus on iOS iOS 15 and it does everything I need.
Sure, in the future some apps I use will no longer allow users to use iOS 15…. But that’s not today.
Why not use your iPhone 11 until it becomes unbearable to use due to being 4 years behind on iOS?
Then — think about getting something different. As I see it (says now I see it) you’ve still got a few good years left on your iPhone 11.

I've relied solely on my phone for too long and now want to expand my device lineup with a tablet and a laptop. However, I can't use any flagship Apple products, which means I'm stuck with overpriced, lower-spec models. Ideally, I would have a 15 Pro Max, a 13" iPad Pro, and a 14" MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, even the LCD iPad Pro irritates my eyes.

This situation makes me consider leaving Apple to get a flagship phone and tablet now. My iPhone 11 will eventually slow down and its battery capacity will degrade. Apple seems committed to an OLED future and has shown no interest in accommodating users with display sensitivities, while some Chinese manufacturers are making efforts in this area. How much longer should I wait, hoping for changes that haven't materialized since the launch of the iPhone X, which first caused/revealed my sensitivity issues?

To put things into perspective, decades ago I became so debilitated using ANY computer, I had to cut them out of my life for a long time. The years away from using computers allowed my body to recover and now I can sort of tolerate them if I’m very careful with screen time.

Although you may be barking at  for the problems you’re experiencing using their devices — perhaps the root problem is too much accumulated screen time in your life on any device. Your body might need time to recover. It took me years.
I don’t think jumping into Android devices while doing everything else the same is going to help you heal.
That’s my feeling anyway.

OK, that's sounds awful and makes my post sound like a pity party. It's good that you where able to identity your issue and address it even if it was years!

My day job won't allow me to retire temporarily from screen time, nor do I think I want to. I appreciate we all need to take necessary steps to help ourselves rather than the modern way of taking a "magic pill" that fixes everything.

I do spend alot of time with screens but I'm good with my studio monitors, iphone 11, Samsung OLED TV, Predator monitor, so it's not unreasonable for me to want newer devices that I can also use. I want to be with a brand and within an Eco system.

The usual rant is Apple = bad, so need another path.

Do you use any iPads or Macbooks?

I've got the Moto Edge and it has worked for me. I'm typing on it now. I can't spend alot of time researching on it as my eyes will definitely feel it but I'm fine a couple hours a day.
Thanks for sharing this. I'm going to give the iPhone 16 a chance. If they still don't use eye friendly screens I'm going to switch to Xiaomi or the Motorola.

But I'm almost sure the 16 line up will be the same as the 15. I don't think they will make a change. I think we all should let our voices be heard to this company's. Complaining here doesn't make any differences. I tried to email Tim Cook and some vps from Apple. I think more people should this. Or we should try to get more attention on this issue through the media. They our not eye friendly screens and they harm lot of peoples vision. I tried to reach out to MKHBD and MrWhoistheboss on YouTube to adress this issue. They briefly mentioned it on their Oneplus 12 video. And of course it's not just Apple. Its also Samsung or LG who doesn't innovate with their screen technology

With ios18 around the corner, and the very real possibility that some of the on-device AI features wont work on the iPhone 11, I am considering a different option. I will buy an iPhone 15 for the wife and take her iPhone 14 and change out the OLED display for an in cell LCD display. This will eliminate the PWM effect and allow me to use newer apple hardware with an LCD screen. The trade off will be battery life and heating if I use the screen for long periods of time.

Speaking of the Honor Magic6, this article states Apples forthcoming iPad Pro uses the same tandem-stack OLED as that phone recently debuted.

I’ve got an old 2016 MacBook on Catalina and an even older Mac mini. They don’t bother me. I don’t use an iPad.
Strangely- I purchased an iPhone 11 based on the recommendations of this forum and I can’t tolerate it. On iOS 16. It’s sitting in a drawer and I know I’ll never attempt to use it again. The screen to me appears odd. Bothers me.

I'm ordering an Honor Magic 6 Pro on Sunday, with a PWM frequency over 4000HZ.
I'm excited and will definitely report at some point how I tolerated it. It will be exciting.
I see you gave up on the 15PM, so what is your verdict on the Honor Magic 6?

I've been using the Honor Magic 6 Pro for a few months now. It's the only OLED screen I can comfortably use. Occasionally I have had slightly dry eyes but that's only when I've been using it for hours. I don't get eye strain or headaches. It's actually a great phone too. The camera is excellent. The only drawback I've found is sometimes the notications are a bit buggy but for me it's a small price to pay to be able to use a flagship OLED phone.

The phone uses 360 hz dc like dimming method and below 30% brightness the 4320hz PWM kicks in. I really don’t know how this actually works. But for me the 360 frequency sounds low. For me phones with low frequency get me eye strain.
Did you previously get eyestrain or headaches with other phones with low frequency?

Any UK resident in here? I read from a Reddit user that changed his OLED panel with LCD from the uk store below and PWM issues went away. Also no battery drain and no touch issues.

Yes. I've tried virtually every OLED iPhone and many other Android phones and always had issues.

Exaggerated examples:
  • 240 Hz PWM OLED: Deadly hornets stinging your arm repeatedly
  • 1000 Hz PWM OLED: Bee stings
  • 2000 Hz PWM OLED: Ant bites
  • 4000 Hz PWM OLED: Mosquito bites
  • 10000 Hz PWM OLED: Sun reflecting in your eyes
  • No PWM: Zero negative effects
Why are some of you OK with using devices that use PWM at all? No way in hell am I going to use a device that only mildly or moderately irritates my eyes and negatively impacts my health. F--- THAT.

iPhone 11 visual problems are different than the OLED iPhones but the root problem stems from the same evil pot of mayhem: flickering pixels, one way or another. Personally I can’t use an iPhone 11. Something seems very wrong with the display. It really bothers me (likely suspect- color dithering).

 has a love affair with flickering pixels. Devices that didn’t used to flicker, now do with newer software updates.
