I was talking to two staff members when I got my iPhone 15 Pro and was explaining the issues. They were playing dumb until another staff member overheard and asked what the issue was. I told him, and he knew exactly what I was talking about. The first two looked furious. 😂

I ended up getting a base iPhone 15 and still had the same issues. The lady I spoke to the next time knew exactly what was going on, apologized, and sorted me out with a refund with no issues.
It's painfully obvious they are told to lie about this issue and any other issue a customer comes to them with. They don't want to be liable for anything.

I don’t think they are lying. They are just simple employees. The hardware seniors from Samsung Apple and Google are aware about this issue. We are just very unlucky. Its just that a real few people are bothered by this issue. In real life I only met one person until now with this issue. My family, friends and colleagues don’t know what I’m talking about. I always have to explain what it is. Show them videos. They still don’t really get it. Also when I buy a monitor or a tv. The employees in the store are just simple staf members. They don’t know better because how small this issue is. That’s why big companies don’t bother to fix it. The Chinese manufacturers really try and market a lot about PWM. It makes me wonder if there are more people in Asia bothered from PWM.

They may not specifically know about the PWM-caused issues, but they definitely are told to not acknowledge anything is an issue. They will never say, “Oh yeah, someone else told me they had an issue with that the other day.” Will never happen.

No kidding. Almost all my friends and family members have iPhones with OLED screens and I never heard anybody complain about the screens until I saw this thread the other day.

Of course. This may be frustrating for customers but if you were in charge of a company, you wouldn't want your line-level employees going around making their own decisions about how to handle problems (or perceived problems) with your products.

Yes they sell 70-80 million iPhones per year. Just a very few people are affected by flickering. Some just by a little and Don’t why this is happening.

Hello.

I’m experiencing some eye strain even on LCD devices and… I know this is going to sound strange, but it’s happening especially since I upgraded from iOS 16 to 17.6.1

I wanted to just ask, if there’s someone on the thread using iOS 18 beta, if you’re experiencing less stress and strain on your eyes on the new operating system.

Thank you.

I’ve never been able to tolerate the iPhone 11. Can’t look at it for even a minute. Worst LCD iPhone of all time (for me).
I even went so far as to completely tape off all the front Face ID laser emitters to see if that was what was causing the problem. Didn’t help.

Yeah, I’ve been using my SE 3, LCD screen, with no issues while being on iOS 16. Now, few days after updating it from 16.6.1 to 17.6.1, I’m experiencing a weird itch in my eyes, and they get red… strange.

If anyone experiencing this could report about iOS 18, I’d be thankful.

PS: I know what I’m suggesting lacks science evidence, I’m just reporting what I’m personally experiencing.

Your claim of iOS 17 causing mayhem with the latest LCD iPhone displays has been mentioned on this thread before. You’re not the only one.
The suspect: a change in temporal dithering.

I've stayed on 16.7.2 but I do feel my iPhone 11 is getting janky/glitchy and likely needs to update sooner rather than later. The day will come when an app I need forces this. I just don't want to risk adding dithering to the only device in the Apple world that is working for me.

I’m considering trying iOS 18 on my iPad Pro to see if it feels better on my eyes, but I’m an IPSW person and I usually don’t install betas. I think it is best to wait until the final release in 10 days… I’m just afraid of updating my notes, reminders and other settings to the new iOS 18 system and not being able to restore them back.

If there was a way to install the latest iOS 18 beta using an IPSW…

EDIT:
I’ve found the Apple Developer site, and I have an account.
Im gonna test iPad 18 beta 8 for you (and for me, of course), to know if it strains the eyes as much. Wish me luck!

I’m getting to the conclusion that this temporal dithering thing is the true culprit of our problems, not necessarily OLED’s PWM.

If only we had a switch on iOS accessibility settings to switch it off…

BTW: I just found there’s a change.org petition about this. Only 130 more people to reach the goal!

I’m currently testing iOS 18 beta on my iPhone 13 and I unfortunately I haven’t noticed it getting any better or worse.

I have a 11 on iOS 17.6 and will be trying it for a week as of tomorrow, I did notice when I upgraded to iOS 17 on it the screen got a hella bright.

I’m tempted to run the iOS 18 beta on it then roll back if it’s worse.

let us know how you get on 🤟
Sadly, I wasn’t able to. When I select the IPSW, original from Apple, It says the Mac (Monterey) needs to download a special file, then tries to download it and it says the servers aren’t responding. I will try later one more time, or maybe OTA.

I’m writing this from iPadOS 18, the latest beta. I’m absolutely delighted by iPadOS 18 but that’s another story.

So far, regarding eye strain, even though it’s early to tell, I would say: I think it is less noticeable? This could be: a) placebo; b) I reverted the iPad resolution to the standard before updating (I usually use my iPad in higher res / more space).

So I will go back to the higher resolution and see if that’s the culprit.
I will report back.

EDIT: back to the higher resolution, so far so good!
I will report back as soon as I notice any discomfort.

EDIT2: a few hours later… I have a slight headache and im not the most comfortable but… no eye soreness or itchiness so I guess it is better?

First time with 11.

I am mega sensitive and when I updated to IOS17 on release date I noticed pain within a few hourse.

Luckily I was able to roll back to IOS16 within a small window that allows it (only available in the first week or so)

Iphone 11 on IOS16 is me for the future going forward. I can and do spend hours on my phone with that combo and I am pain free.

I think… I mean I’m not sure anymore and it may seem I’m getting crazy but, I think iPadOS 18.0 is right now easier on my eyes than iOS 17.6.1, and I’ve never had a problem with my iPhone SE 3, but since updating from iOS 16 to 17 I feel a burning/itchy sensation on my eyes.

But now that I have iPadOS 18 on my iPad Pro, it seems easier on my eyes. Better than iOS 16? I don’t think so, but at least better than iOS 17.6.1 which was pretty bad on my iPad Pro as well.

So… I think this year I’ll make an exception, and I will jump right into iOS 18 from the beginning.

Apple, if you read this, please, give us an accessibility option to at least disable temporal dithering. We really love your hardware, your software and services, we want to buy your products but if you let them bother our eyes, we’ll have to move on.
