Guessing that Apple will not say anything about it this morning, do you think that we will have already someone testing and reporting the screen frequency? Or usually do we wait until the devices release?
No, I don’t think they are implementing anything new on the iPhone 16 to help with our issues. I read something along the lines of micro-lenses on the screen to improve brightness so, who knows, maybe it is worth trying them… although I wouldn’t be too optimistic, as I’ve read that the new Pixel 9 uses a similar panel (same new material), and it has a bad PWM.

I looked on the "other side", where brands like Motorola, Nothing and Honor seem the best for eye safety
Check out the new CMF phone by Nothing. It not only looks like a decent smartphone with good specs and great design, but also I’ve read somewhere that the PWM it uses is pretty comfortable. Maybe it is worth a try.

No display currently available today from anyone can natively output Billions of colors. The only way they can claim it, is by cheating your visual processing with a dirty little trick called temporal dithering, where adjacent pixels fluctuate (flicker) very rapidly, fooling the eyes that they see a color that doesn’t actually exist.

BTW, humans at the very best can not detect more than 1 million colors — so creating displays that can mimic Billions of colors is absurd.

After the keynote ended I ordered a Motorola Edge 50 Ultra (I live in Europe) which is supposedly one of the best screens for sensitive people; I will keep an eye on the iPhone 16 reviews while being in the return window... but from what they showed i'd say 99% nothing changed

If the analyst note about Apple ordering PWM-free displays for iPhone 17 is accurate, and I can’t find the Tweet/X that user had referenced, then I am fine waiting one more year for this to finally be over.

Let's hope the rumor is true, if Apple will start to market their screens as eye friendly every other brand will feel the need to adapt so it will be a win for everyone, fingers crossed!

A claim of a deleted tweet on X by a nobody claiming there will be a PWM free iPhone next year…. doesn’t inspire much hope.
In fact, it inspires no hope.

Except for the Apple exclusive Retina LCD Display revealed with the iPhone 4, they have always been a follower in the screen technology front. Historically, the newest display tech comes out on Android first, and then eventually  incorporates it into their future iPhones.
If a PWM display is even possible, that looks good, it’ll be used in an android phone first.

Hi all- I have some sort of good news. After suffering with this whole situation since iPhone 10, I do have a somewhat workable solution. My iPhone XR was getting extremely old and slow, so I spent a bunch of time finding a way forward.

Motorola recently released an LCD screen (NON OLED) called the Moto G 5g. It's totally non OLED and is an old school LCD screen. It's only $179 but it's a 2024 smartphone so it's got many good features and is fast. What I did was purchase an iPhone 15 pro so I can still use iMessage, IOS etc, for short periods of time. And then I've got this Motorola for longer periods of reading/scrolling. I can read for hours on the Moto G 5g without issue, whereas I get eye pain, headaches, dryness etc. after 5-10 mins on the iPhone. You can literally just hotspot your Motorola to the iPhone if you want. I personally just purchased another line for it so both work independently.

This combo allows me to stay in the Apple ecosystem but have a phone with me that I can look at for long periods of time. Hope this helps!

I did a lot of research on this a while ago. There's no authorized dealer for these in the US other than one obscure carrier that refuses to ship them (i.e. you have to be able to walk in to one of their stores to get one).

At the moment an iPhone SE 2020, before that... the iPhone Xs that started all this eye strain after some years of use.

Yes for sure i will give feedback on the Motorola, in the US you have the equivalent of the Edge 50 Pro which is called Edge 2024, and in the specs DC Dimming it's clearly indicated as a feature, just like on the Ultra. The downside is that the CPU is not that fast (it's a Snapdragon 7s Gen 2).

I am in Europe too. I was curious if 50 pro uses similar screen with ultra to save some bucks. They differ mostly on nits….

I’m very curious if it works out for you

This is the phone you are mentioning right?
