Do people in this thread understand ”eye-strain” as the display being harsh or unenjoyable to look at, or that there is nothing wrong with the experience itself, the only difficulty being the adverse medical issues that result from use? Or is it both?

I’ve only ever used one on a shop stand, not long enough to cause issue, but the display is so difficult to look at that even if I don’t get any medical problems, I can’t tolerate the subjective experience, namely with how the display renders scrolling text.

Well after selling my iPhone X due to having eye strain and leaving my eyes unabale to focus properly I’ve come back to it...

I’ve turned off the FaceID attention aware features and this seems to have helped...doesn’t seem to have totally eliminated the discomfort but it doesn’t feel as bad

I haven’t adjusted the white point etc but now may try that as well...

It’s anectodal....but they’re my eyes and I know how they feel...take it as you will...

I almost instantaneously feel some kind of difficulty / discomfort, but the eyestrain and cervical pain develop minutes later. That is different to certain pc monitors and laptop displays, for which there is no first sign: eyestrain is immediately sever. With these super-phones it is more subtle.
As to face id, I never tried it.

One question. Can the super high resolution be responsible or co-responsible for the eyestrain?
Anyone knows about any relationship between display resolution and PWM frequency, i.e., lowering the resolution may reduce the flickering?

No eye strain or focusing issues anymore .
I’ve been using my X with Face ID and awareness off for a month .
Well tell a little lie , I’ve put Face ID back on for unlock only and close my eyes for unlocking the phone .
It works well for me and I’m now happy with my X again as the thought of going back to an 8 plus form was not good .

That is how I use my X as well. Except that I usually don’t close my eyes when unlocking, but sometimes I do :)

No problems anymore. Although I cannot use it for games. I played 20 minutes of NBA Live and started feeling a bit of nausea. No big issue though, as I almost never use my phones for games.

I am happy with the phone now.

For me having FaceID disabled makes little to no difference. I can reach out to see if the sensors are fully disabled with FaceID off.

You need to switch off awareness to as that uses the true depth camera and projector to detect your eyes are still viewing the screen so not to switch off the screen when it’s still in use .
I have auto screen time out set at 5 mins which works well .

This might also help if you don’t put the device so close to your face. When I first got it, I did get eye strain assuming I had to put it closer to unlock. Now, I put it further away and still unlocks and less eye strain.

This is sort of off-topic, but I found that FaceID got a lot more reliable (was a lot less picky about the angle at which the phone was "looking" at me) when I re-scanned my face at the furthest distance that FaceID would permit.

How do you explain the nausea when it's the result of using the phone for 20 minutes, when no Face ID is present?

It sounds a bit like people wanting to find fault at anywhere but the screen, since its not something you can just switch off.

So I did receive a response I can share publicly: Apple is aware of the issue and is investigating it.

When I say Apple, I do mean Apple. While I can’t share specific details, I can state confidently that my persistence did make it to :apple:

Thanks for letting us know, that's awesome that you were able to get through to them. Here's hoping the new iPhones will have this sorted out :D

By the way, I actually went ahead and sold my X and got an 8+ a few days ago, it's honestly been fine. I'm really liking the bigger battery and more screen real estate (I sure do miss the edge to edge screen and higher PPI though). I'm really hyped for the X+, since it'll have the best aspects of both the plus and X. Hopefully some iPad features like split view, multitasking, or PiP make it into the X+ as well.

The extra screen real estate is definitely nice but the X has a much better display in terms of PPI and contrast, which I miss most on the 8+.

X+ should be a beast and considering the rumors pointing to LG manufacturing the OLED display and the fact that Apple is well aware of the issue my hopes are high that this won’t even have to be a discussion on the X+.

I have naive question: does Face ID scan face only when unlocking or is it projecting beams all the time you watch the screen?

Not a naive question at all, & I think it's only when unlocking or scanning for authentication.

False. Do the following test, record your iPhone X screen with a camera while you unlock and look at it, you will notice the infrared from the Face ID always blinking in a short period of time while looking at it. This happens because the Face ID sensor is always looking for your face and eyes position to keep the screen on while you keep looking at it.

Oh, right, I totally forgot about the "attention aware" features. I'd test it myself, but I already swapped for an 8+.

Thank You guys... I was on the fence (X vs. 8+), I needed such clincher! Who doesn't want to keep eyes healthy? OK, so welcome to 8 plus.

With all due respect, that's not much to go by. That's a standard catch-all response and means almost nothing.

Looks like it's time to abandon hope on the X and start waiting for the LCD version coming in fall.

Agree, it's very possible that they will investigate and decide that the issue isn't significant enough to take any action.

I've never heard of this issue outside this forum and I'm guessing there's a handful of people at most with major problems in this thread/forum. Apple has sold millions upon millions of these phones and I don't see them doing much to fix an issue for such a minuscule amount of complaints. I know it sucks for those with issues who are loyal to Apple but it wouldn't make sense to do things differently to appease a couple people out of tens of millions. Apple will probably recommend an LCD iPhone for those with issues.

It's definitely not a super well known issue, but there's a decent-ish amount of the population that's affected.

As for Apple changing anything, if they use LG for screens, that would help a lot. If they continue with samsung, maybe a software fix like that PWM-free kernel for the galaxy phones?

LG also uses PWM dimming in there (last 2 years) OLED smartphone screens!!
