Not sure what Apple will do in the short term. I'd hope they offer a software update to readjust PWM in the iPhone X.

In the longer-term, Apple is developing microLED in-house. With aims to use a third-party manufacturer. Coincidentally, LG has filed for microLED patents. Just a reminder, Apple has invested heavily in LG displays recently.

You do the math.

However microLED is crazy expensive so don't expect a device for at least a year from now. It's good news though. MicroLED looks very promising. All the benefits of OLED, with rich blacks, and no burn-in, and no PWM.

Where did you see there’s no PWM on microLED? I also assume that to be the case as using it again would be unwise but you can technically dim almost any type of display with PWM.

No.

(What I had told you previously isn’t necessarily still accurate.)

Not sure what I can and can’t say so I will remain quiet until I have an update I can share publicly.
[doublepost=1521755569][/doublepost]

Possibly... Will let you guys know when I can.

Might you be able to give us any idea when that might be? I ordered an iPhone X case pre-emptively, and I was already going to return it.

Maybe I'll hold out a while longer.

I should hopefully have an update I can share publicly before the end of the month.

Had my iPhone X since lunch day loved it been having eye strain off and on since I got it just went back to my iPhone 7 Plus this morning to see if the eye strain goes away.
I’ve Also been worried about the use of FaceTime and the infrared laser scanning my face/eyes will there be long term affects from it years later.

For those of you that went back to an iPhone 8 or other phone how long did it take for your eye strain to go away or back to normal.

Maybe you should have lunch on other days than just once a year, that might help, too.

(I kill me...)

Going back and forth between the 8+ and X, it’s clear how much better the X is. From its size to design to display (flicker notwithstanding). My eyes and head are thankful when I switch to the 8+ but after spending time with the X it’d be difficult to go back indefinitely.

I’m hopeful that there is good news on the horizon...

I'm really curious as to what the news could be. I'd be pretty surprised if they actually were able to alter PWM through just a software update, but I can't imagine what else it could be.

It’s doable on the Galaxy phones so it’s more than likely possible here as well.

I am almost certain there will be no adjustment to the iphone X !!!
Disabling PWM will decrease screen uniformity and Apple will NOT do this

Not really.
It's PWM with perfect screen uniformity or NO PWM and less screen uniformity.

That's one of the reasons why there is PWM dimming!!

I’ll take the latter.

Anyway, if there is a fix it probably wouldn’t be enabled by default. There are methods of disabling it without any notable issues.

I agree I loved the X but got tired of the eye strain it’s been couple day with out using the X and my eye strain has been way better. I traded phones with my daughter she wanted the iPhone X to begin with so I took her iPhone 8 Plus.
But if they come out with a fix I’ll take my X back from her lol
Still a little worried about the iPhone X Infrared face camera causing long term effects on eyes.

https://1reddrop.com/2017/09/16/will-face-id-iphone-x-damage-retina/

We will find out after a couple of years of usage ;)

I have swapped the iPhone X for a 8 plus after 2 weeks in December and I never looked back.

Perfect flickering free LCD screen and a fingerprint and no notch and 16:9 format (probably the last iphone with this aspect ratio)

The notch was especially bothering me in landscape mode with full screen. Missing a part of the visibility of the screen. Also the symmetry is ugly in landscape with a notch on one side.
Normally Apple is all about symmetry

More Bezels I know but the other advantages of the 8 plus are enough for me to stay away from the X

I don’t understand this. In addition to several iPhones I’ve also owned the Samsung Galaxy S4, Galaxy Alpha and Note 4. Zero eye strain problems for me with those three and those are like 3-4 years ago models. I had no issue that I could detect on uniformity, whatever that is. Those screens were great, especially the Note 4. I never heard of such widespread problems.

I can’t see any excuse for not making a great screen with this very established technology, at this price point. The only reason for this type of problem must be cost cutting in some way or needless vanity on thinness or battery size.

And again at this price point those just aren’t acceptable excuses. This one needed to be perfect. And that’s not difficult.

Well said. What's a bit interesting is that almost none of the reviews that I've read picked up on the issues and instead just raved on about the blackness and color gamut.

I am somewhat concerned about Face ID and possible retinal damage so I have turned it off and just use a passcode. I'm more concerned for young people who open their phone with Face ID frequently and will be using it for years before risks (if any) are identified.

Please don't take this personally - I don't understand the logic of paying $1K (or more) for a phone for which the big selling point (and a lot of the cost) is FaceID and then turning it off - actually going back to the unlock technology of an iPhone 4/4S. You could save a lot of money by buying an iPhone 8 - or even a 6S.

I’ve been using my X with Face ID off plus the awareness feature switched off as this scans with true depth camera to check your still viewing the screen before it switches off the screen .
I honestly don’t think I’m having any noticeable eye strain of focusing issues after using the X that I had before disabling these features.
Is it a placebo or I’m just not using the phone as much or my eye’s are getting used to the screen ?
I don’t think so .
I’m sticking with these setting but I have enabled Face ID for unlock only , I now close my eye’s for a second as I swipe up .

I love the bigger screen in the smaller form factor. I used FaceID for awhile and it worked well, but it is almost as fast to open the phone using a passcode and I'm just more comfortable doing that at the moment. I wouldn't go back to the smaller screen and the plus is just too big for me.

Interestingly, for me the display size was a minus because it's so tall that, combined with several of the most important gestures (at least, important to me) coming from the top of the display, I found it very hard to use one-handed.

For me (and this probably doesn't apply to very many people), the passcode is a PITA because I have my corporate email on the phone and we're required to use a complex passcode. Also, using the passcode kills or at least really snarls one-handed use. The last time I had to do that was with the iPhone 5, and I really don't want to go back. :D

I continue to be interested in all the different ways people feel about the iPhone X. I wish I had a dime for every thread someone has started about that phone since it was introduced. ;)

I stopped using iPhone X Friday and still haven’t fully recovered yet. In fact I slept most of the weekend since my eyes/head were still causing me discomfort. Take that as a warning to limit or totally cease iPhone X usage until there’s (hopefully) a fix if you’re experiencing issues.

I became a little concerned and turned it off. I think it's probably safe, but things have been used in the past that were considered safe and later found to be harmful (x-rays for one) and I don't want to take any chances with my eyes. I love everything else about the X and don't mind this compromise which is good because it doesn't look like TouchID is coming back.

Does the potential fix involve jailbreaking? That would be the only reason for me not to update IOS tomorrow

No. :)
[doublepost=1522118245][/doublepost]Gotta say I’m becoming concerned about my long-term health. Hopefully all recovers and the fix works out. Even taking a second to turn off my iPhone X gave me eye pain and a persistent headache. For my health my iPhone X’s are powered off and I’m (unhappily, to be frank) using iPhone 8+ until there’s news.

My eye is still intermittently throbbing, by the way.
