Android won't save you necessarily. Samsung OLED phones still have PWM, among other display issues.
This is a bit misleading. “PWM” can be implemented in different ways - an in fact the analysis show that Apple’s implementation is different and is causing the problem for some people.

Also those Samsung displays are great. As far back as Note 4 those things were already insanely good. You gotta give them their due on that. Sorry but don’t snipe. Instead demand that Apple match that quality - they are charging enough for the product.

The Samsung implementation isn't a slam dunk for me though. I get immediate eye strain + nausea --> migraine if I used any of the OLED Galaxy phones. Also I can clearly see the interposed black/off frames if I move my eyes side to see while reading, while this doesn't occur as noticeably with the iPhone X. The iPhone X also gives me the same symptoms though.

I have been able to adapt to some PWM implementations. Phillips Hue uses it and it took me a year of slowly increasing exposure to the lights to be able to use them all the time without problems.

What a ridiculous problem to have to adjust to. It's frustrating to experience something that is at once debilitating but also guaranteed to be immediately met with incredulity or skepticism by anyone not experiencing it firsthand.

Does this cause migraine headaches as well? I’ve been monitoring my usage and when I use my phone more often than my computer, I get these terrible headaches. I also have the blurry vision and my eyes hurt as well. It occurs after a few hours of usage, I guess.

This is so annoying. I’m now contemplating switching to an 8 Plus. I haven’t really followed this thread but it seems to be valid.

I am wondering the same ever since I got the X my eyes strain. As if the invisible facial scan lasers stay on burning my eyes causing this strain without knowing.

There seems to be three camps in this discussion:

1. It's OLED PWM flickering causing eyestrain and headaches
2. It's Face ID infrared emitters hitting your retina and causing pain, eyestrain, headaches
3. It's both, in different levels for different folks' eyes

Until there's a scientific study on this, take your pick.

I did not consider that it could be the Face ID emitters causing the migraines and eye strain. That’s kind of unfortunate because I was hoping the 2018 LCD model would solve my problems that I’m having with the X. But if it’s Face ID causing the issue, then I’m not sure what to do. Thanks for this info. I guess Apple won’t acknowledge that it’s a problem, but I’ve gone ahead and purchased an iPhone 8.

I put tape over the faceID and front cameras. Basically that whole top strip for a couple weeks, did nothing for me. Still had crazy headaches & eyestrain. I had the same problem with my new high end laptop. I downloaded a program called Iris which fixed it.

Is this program for the computer only?

If I spent hours staring at a small X screen I would have eye strain too. As for fid I have had it turned off for unlock for months, much better phone with out it.

I don't have an iPhone X, but have had a few previous android phones, including some Samsung's, and I bet 80% of the issue is the OLED. There's a reason that even though it's a technically better screen technology, I prefer Apple LCDs. I'll probably be getting the 6.1" model as long as it maintains the LCD and doesn't cut out any must have features for me. Either that or the SE gen. 2.

Also, I bet MicroLED will kick some serious ass.

May be because of iPhone X small size. I would not browse or do any thing other than calling on such a small phone.

I am using an iPhone X since the end of december. Two weeks ago I started having bad eye strain and fuzzy vision. I understand there could be a high number of causes for this, and that the phone should not be on top of the list (since I was using it for months with no issues). Nevertheless, I would like to find out if the phone is indeed the culprit.
I already disabled FaceID and the Attention Awareness features.
To my question: is there an optimal brightness level, at which the display does not flicker (as much)?
I thought I could deactivate the automatic brightness feature and set the display at one precise level.
If there is no such thing, I will just revert to my old 6.

That’s the point.
More people use mobile phones to browse the internet than desktop. Easy statistic to look up. That's the point of large screen phones. Are you saying we should all buy dumbphones and stay at home on our computers to read and browse the internet? Umm. Okay. Maybe instead manufacturers can NOT make large screen mobile phones give us headaches? That seems like a better solution.

No. I just think the IPhone X is too small.

Look at posts on March 12 & March 14... try 50% brightness or 100%@80 White point reduction.

I didn’t try any remedies, was using the X as intended with all features enabled, ultimately I returned it and went with the 8 with LCD, no issues at all with that model.

bummer. looks like a new rumor suggests all OLED on next year's models -
https://www.macrumors.com/2018/05/28/2019-iphones-oled/

Guess I might have to hold onto my 8 until microLED comes alone (which I hope is better and doesn't use PWM).

Who knows maybe with enough exposure I can get used to OLED.
That's so frustrating. If they haven't figured out how to address the pwm situation, we're all stuck with the budget model with missing features until who knows when. I really hope they have some kind of option for us by next year.

Yeah I agree. If a 6.1” LCD comes out this year I’ll get that one though. At least it will be a bigger screen and I don’t actually use the camera that much despite liking the dual camera option.

When my vision was severely damaged 2 years ago even Note 3/Galaxy S4 "gentle" PWM caused me great pain.

Not going to work for everybody. That's all I was saying.
