I'm with ya. I want to like the OLED, but I had to return my launch day X last year. I tried again a few months later hoping the screen would somehow be different, but it got returned as well.

I ordered a Max. Hoping the rumors of a new screen supplier are true, and that that will somehow be better.

I'm sure you will, but please keep us posted. Right now I plan to wait for the Xr but there are a few weeks in between so those that give it a try can let us know.

Well I wish I had read this before I pre-ordered my XS Max. I was on the fence about various different things (Face ID being a biggie), and now I’m reading this.

I use my phone a lot, and this issue with the headaches and the Face ID stuff not being tested makes me really nervous.

Maybe I need to hang onto my 8+ a while longer.

You have two weeks to try it and return it. I owned a Galaxy S6 and a Galaxy S7 for two weeks each before returning them and getting iPhones. They are both PWM screens and I never noticed a thing with them. I’m not anticipating any issues with the iPhone Max either, but there’s always that two week return window.

I find my Galaxy S9+ gives me headaches. It helps to use the blue light filter and make the screen warmer in colour.

I never had an issue with all my previous iPhones but I haven’t tried the X.

Have not had any issues yet with the X. After a year of use.

I had some issues with the 2018 Macbook though, until i turned off TrueTone. (No problems with it on the X though, which is weird)

Well I surely hope that’s not gonna be a problem for me because I have someone buying my 8+ the day I get my XS Max, and I’m gonna be pretty stuck if I wind up having a problem. :(

But what about this face scanning stuff? How concerned should we be about that?

What issue is this particular to an X, any screen used too much can cause an issue especially if you’re photosensitive.

It’s particular the the iPhones with OLED screens, it’s to do with how they generate the images.

I’ve used OLED phones for a while and it seems to be other factors like how bright the screen is or colour temperature that effect my eyesight rather than the screen technology.

Tell us more please. I'm still thinking about whether to buy the XS or XR. This is really important to me cause i have very sensitive eyes.

Websites with a lot of white and small text can be blinding to me, and I always find they cause eye strain after a little while. I keep the brightness of screen on low and use night colour schemes on things like Tapatalk.

Can I ask would people advise turning of True Tone on the X screen?

Hello all,

I thought I'd post here about an issue I've been having and see if anyone else is experiencing the same thing.

When I'm using the phone my eyes feel strained, like, they're trying to focus on the screen. Also, I've noticed that when I look away from my phone at something else, my eyes feel a little blurry and I have to blink.

Not sure why this is happening. I've tweaked with all the various displays settings (TrueTone/Night Shift/White balance), but nothing seems to make a real difference. Not using a screen protector.

Anyone else?
Turn down the brightness and contrast setting or just use the dark/nighttime settings all the time.

I wonder if anyone has noticed any changes with iOS 12? Could Apple have made some adjustments?

In theory Apple could adjust the PWM frequency through a software update while reducing color quality and battery life but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Hmm. I’ve noticed several comments from X owners who downloaded iOS 12 noting more “vibrant” colors (or more saturated).

From what I’ve been able to tell there’s most no published data about the safety of the scanners. I can tell you I experienced progressive worsening pain using the iris scanner on my Samsung phones. But my eye doctor saw me a few months ago and said my eyes were healthy.

If you’re worried you can adjust the Face ID to work without requiring you to look at it and close your eyes while scanning or look away. I never noticed pain while using Face ID for the month that I had the X. But my eyes felt a bit odd using Animoji. Hard to say why at this point.

I'd just tape over the IR LED's since in my case my visions already badly damaged and can hurt for a day or two looking at a IR LED in a mouse, just viewing a laser pointing on a wall, etc (And no I'm not looking straight into it lol).

I don’t have any known diagnosed damage but my eyes don’t tolerate beams of light well, either. I hate the red eye reduction beams from some cameras, especially.

For me the pwm flicker and the issues I seem to have with my vision seem to have less to do with my eyes alone and more to do with my brain. I have a migraine disorder that confers on me a weird bunch of dysfunction but some interesting benefits, too. One of the benefits is I can tolerate VR Goggles for as long as I care to wear them. The rest of the family can take only 15-20 minutes, tops.

But I can’t watch programs on our big screen Samsung tv. A lot of fast paced commercials induce migraine and sometimes even seizures.
