If apple made touch id under the display and ditched face id, i would have preordered X in a second, now I dont know what to do, probably will buy 8 plus... dont want ir beams in my face 100 times a day:(

The symptoms are congruent with PWM sensitivity but the odd part is that many people in this thread who aren’t sensitive to PWM on other devices are debilitatingly sensitive to iPhone X/XS. So it is possible though frankly unlikely that it has been FaceID all along; regardless, the PWM implementation is still problematic.

iPhone XR will be how we can isolate sensitivity to FaceID sensors from PWM sensitivity, if the former is the issue and not the latter.
The likelihood is we still won’t have a definitive answer. Setting up face-ID made me uncomfortable and dizzy.

I guess if people complain of the same thing with the Xr we will have our answer. Unless it is a perfect storm of pwm and Face ID of course.

It wasn't face ID on the X. I turned it off and covered it up with tape. Made no difference in the headaches. Once I stopped looking at it for 2 days the headaches were gone.

Just curious here, have people experimented using FaceID on but Attention Awareness off? This is how I use my Max and although I am usually sensitive to PWM, other than finding the text harder to read than on my 8, it’s slightly blurry, haven’t had any issues with headaches or dizziness.

I find these comments super fascinating about the sensitivities! I’m disabled with chronic migraines and have not noticed any difference since I’ve upgraded from the 7+. Always interesting to me what triggers other people!

Others have said that they have taped over the sensor and still get headaches so if this follows then the awareness thing should not make any difference.

I had a support chat with apple and have tried as suggested turning brightness to 100% and activating reduce white point, I do not like this solution though as it means that the phone is often too bright or too dim depending on the environment. I have today also tried reduce motion, increase contrast and have switched off the attention awareness setting, it is too early to tell as my symptoms have been more subtle than others. Either way I am not sure I want to jump through so many hoops on a £1400 phone. Apple have investigated and are calling me back later today so will be interested to see what they suggest. Swapping for an Xr is an option I guess but the Xr has too many compromises for my liking even if that Product red one does look quite nice.

I’d love to see a proper scientific investigation of this as for reasons previously stated in this thread it surely cannot be just down to PWM?

a 1000 dollar phone and the bright must be set to 100%, it´s absurd hahaha

I also block the front camera with black tape and the eye strain was the same!

I went back to the iphone 7 and the strain go off immediately

For whatever reason, I just assumed that I would not have any issue with eye strain or headaches despite knowing of this thread. I opted for the 8 Plus over the X last year so it was not an issue. Then came the Max. My eyes would become dry, then strained, then headaches/slight nausea. But the most bothersome thing of all was what would happen after looking intently at the screen either reading text or composing a text message to someone. I would look up from the screen and things like the television, clock on the wall, etc would be blurry. It would take more than several blinks for my eyes to refocus. This has not happened to me prior to the Max. All things considered, I suppose I experienced what others have discussed in this thread. Quite disappointing as I thoroughly enjoyed the Max otherwise. This will be the first time I use the same phone for two years as I have zero interest in the XR. I honestly am not sure what I will do come 9/2019 because I would bet the farm that the same screens will be used on next year's devices.

Had my call back from apple senior advisor, he said that the engineer had looked into my case and would like me to try a factory reset and to set up as a new phone.

I am seriously lost for words tbh

I honestly think it is like trying to discuss anxiety or depression symptoms with someone who has never experienced either. It's like they cannot comprehend due to lack of personal experience. I think it would take someone reputable, such as a blogger, engineer, or even person of clout with Apple to experience it as well, in order to get somewhere.

Yea. Amazing how at the “genius” bar, Best Buy and VZW we consumers are all just idiots. Apparently the training program leaves out the part where the tech is supposed to assess the level of knowledge that the customer has. I almost laugh out loud at some of these people when they start babbling at me like I’m fresh out of 1st grade. That’s why I shop online as much as possible anymore. The in-person sales pitch and service solutions are agonizing. And this continual restore/reset to solve problems beyond laughable. I was in VZW yesterday to consider pulling the trigger on a couple of new iPhones. I asked about the complaint rate on the signal/connectivity issue with the XS and Max. He acknowledged that there have been a few but said apple would send out an update. Apparently I was supposed to be cool with that “solution” and hand over $2,000+ for the phones and walk out with a smile. Told him thanks, but no. Wow.

Just checking in one week after returning my XS Max for an 8+. My eyes have returned to normal (though it did take a few days for the behind the eye pain to fully disappear) and I’m able to use my phone through the day with no issues.

I hope Apple continues with LCD options in future generations (or they change whatever it is unique they do with OLED).

I do miss the home button gestures that come with the X generation. I’d say that’s the biggest loss moving back to the 8+.

These are my symptoms verbatim. Equally disappointed as I prefer not having a physical home button, but I can’t pull the trigger on anything beyond the 8+ now without a better idea of what’s going on.

I understand we are in the minority but would mean a lot for Apple to provide some guidance :(. There’s clearly *something* going on.

Issues with the iPhone XS Max or XS have focused primarily on two factors: PWM and Face-ID. I returned my XS Max and since then have been going to the apple store and using the XS Max because I was really curious as to what was bothering me and hoping I could adjust the settings to deal with issue. I have concluded that the main issue w/the phone is glare. The glass on the display seems to be a magnet for reflections of any kind whereas I don’t see this issue with my 8 Plus. The glare is annoying and creates a fundamental discomfort in using the phone. I noticed this when I was typing emails on the phone vs. simply looking at the screen. Perhaps the glare could be handled with an matte antiglare screen, but this might also result in degrading the image. Will look at XR this Friday.

Just ordered the XR. One might say the XR is a sight for XS Max sore eyes.

Given this was escalated to an engineer I was expecting better.

I think as others have said it probably needs a prominent vlogger to flag it.

It's my fault really I should have done something inside the first 14 days!

That you have a problem with the newer iPhone screens, could be true, just like some people have problems with the frequency of fluorescent lights in buildings, and some with metals in certain jewelry.
to to make this a huuuuge problem is a bit much, and trying to turn it into a Gate subject feels a bit like overkill.

Maybe a silly option is to have you screen exchanged with a non Apple Chinese screen, that might not have those problems.

:))) like buying 1000 usd phine and then hacking non original screen on it:) Think different:)

Yeah like buying a 1500,- ring and asking the maker to change the metal composition, because you are allergic to it :D

Or asking Apple to change the screen on the iPhone-X because 0.00001% has problems with it
