Why do people get offended so easily here?

We where talking about pixels and how anything longer than 16:9 of the width is not always actual es
I was watching some of the new XR preview videos, and I saw this in one of them. Is this PWM flickering? Or just some weird effect due to the way he recorded it? I've never seen PWM flickering look like that.

Starts at 1:03.

This happens with some recording and indoor light. This is not PWM (I hope)

That is moiré from the sensor pixel grid not lining up with the phones pixel grid. I'm still optimistic

Good luck to everyone who is preordering tonight.

I really hope iPhone XR is free of PWM, but you have to remember: Apple does not manufacture these display panels. They are sourced from vendors who include specifications and requirements. That is why iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S9 both use pulse-width modulation. They are the same panel with the same requirements. It’s going to be the same situation for the iPhone XR and LG G7.

Yeah, I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the XR will probably have PWM. I just hope that it's only limited to 42% brightness and below.

I was planning to order, but after reading the latest messages I guess I will skip it and stick with 8+

If you were really set on getting the XR, you could always preorder it and record a simple slo-mo video as an initial test when you get it. NotebookCheck should do their PWM test within the first week, hopefully. You can always return it within 2 weeks. No one on these forums knows for sure if iPhone XR will use PWM or not, including myself.

That was my plan for XS too, but once I got it I couldn’t bring myself to return it, so plan to give it to a family member. Don’t want the same happening with XR :)

How are you so sure?

As someone already mentioned, that’s not PWM, that is moire. Moire can happen when fine details out-resolve the resolution of the camera.

Before HD, most television shows would have rules against wearing striped clothing as moire would happen from even large patterns on ties / shirts.

I too am really curious as to exactly what it is about apples implementation that appears to make it worse than other OLEDs

I snoozed and I lost on mine, I am now past my 14 days (21 days tomorrow) was close to returning it a couple of times but as it was on the upgrade program I never did.

Anyway I’ve not had headaches so thought I was unaffected but noticed at the weekend just how tired my eyes felt. Have been using an LG G7 since Saturday night and have noticed an improvement. I guess tiredness is less obvious than pain and it is anecdotal, could have been another reason entirely.

Wondering how much mileage I’ll get if I contact support? Doubt they’d offer me a refund now. The thing is I want to keep using an iPhone but that XR is just not grabbing me.

Same boat. In New Zealand and we don’t have Apple stores. Called the returns line and easily sorted a return after 3.5 weeks . They admitted they “bent the rules” but I didn’t have to try very hard.

They put me through to tech initially but when I mentioned pmw they were happy to take it back. I said I would be purchasing an Xr instead and they said that would help. I doubt they have that level of internal engineering insight but hey, I’m hopeful :)

WOW, hope it´s not PWM

My X looks like this trough the camera of the iphone 8 (not need to record in slow motion, just looking through the lens is enough):

I'm really curious if the XR will end up having PWM. I hope we find out before the launch date, but the only way I see that happening is if the guys at notebookcheck get it soon.

Given that orders literally start in less than an hour, I guess it’s safe to say that will not find out before launch date.

Depends on if one of the youtubers who has review access would be willing to do the slomo test, worth a shot.

I will pre order and test it myself at home! best review ever, your own eyes (if you can apply to the 14 days return policy, of course).
