Not for the notifications. And it's just a swipe up. What's annoying is to touch that button every time and it takes good 2-3 seconds. I'm not saying I'm being impatient but the overall experience of having Face ID over Touch ID is big difference and those seconds do count in it.

I'll tell you why people don't like Face ID.

- While driving you have to look at the iPhone to unlock so that's dangerous sometimes.
- While eating food, you can't unlock cause then you have to hold your iPhone properly and then unlock while in Touch ID you can just clean your thumb and easily unlock and start using iPhone with one finger
- While waking up in the morning your eyes have not opened up entirely as one is still sleepy so it doesn't unlock all the time.

But when it comes to day to day usage, Touch ID is annoying. Face ID is a breeze and it saves lot of time. Not just unlocking phone. Downloading apps, passwords, login to my Hilton/Marriott apps or Banking apps like AMEX. Even for Payments Face ID works like a breeze. So if I can do so many things just by looking at the phone, I don't really care about above points I mentioned. There will always be some downside but when you have so many positive points, I guess we can easily live with those few negative sides.
You do have to touch your phone to point it at your face or hold it to read it, unless you're bending over wherever it's sitting, which sounds uncomfortable. The point is, in most cases, you're already touching your phone because you're holding it.

It's strictly a matter of personal preference. I haven't experienced having to wait 2-3 seconds for Touch ID to work. Others may. I don't like touching my phone unless my hands are clean and dry, so that hasn't been a problem for me. For others, it might be. I like being able to unlock my phone without looking at it. For others, that's not an issue. See my point? There is no right or wrong answer as to which is better. What matters is which is better for each person.

I never tried face ID but I've been wanting it since it was introduced. I'm always getting my hands sweaty or wet working in the yard, cooking, eating, washing up, etc... It often takes more than a wipe on the jeans, you have to really dry off. If I'm on a project and on the go, touch ID is annoying and doesn't work when I want so very much looking forward to face ID....and for bike and motorcycle gear.

If your hands are dirty, Touch ID doesn't work. I've had issues when my hands are sweaty and I'm unable to clean quickly, Touch ID never worked and it's obvious, there's nothing wrong in it. It's Touch after all.

With Face ID, that's not the case at all. Even if I'm sleepy, iPhone unlocks and with someone else's face, it never does. At least that has never happened with me.

I have to agree about that flaw with Touch ID. My type of work always involves my hands getting dirty and sweaty. Face ID works 99% of the time for me, whatever situation I’m in. I often had issues using it. Face ID works with me wearing a hat and my glasses. Even if I wear a different pair of glasses or a different hat, it still works. I believe it learns how your face looks with different things, could be wrong on that. The secondary face thing is nice. I’m using both for my own face and just makes it even more reliable. I adjusted to Face ID within two minutes of going from my 7+ to the 10. I don’t miss Touch ID at all... even though my iPhone SE has it. I sometimes mistakenly try to unlock it like I do with the 10. Oops! Lol.

Actually, after you unlock your phone using touchid you have to look at it don’t you? Checking notifications or any content requires sight so your doing the same thing in both cases whether using faceid or touchid

Glad Face ID is working for you - I hated it. Sold my X because of it. Really hoping it improves.

Even the scenarios where I have to type in my Pin, that whole process is quicker on Toucher ID than how long it takes for Face ID to deny access twice and then enter. I couldn't stand it.

That's exactly right. So whether you're using Touch ID or Face ID, you still have to do two things: touch your phone and look at your phone, which you would be doing, even with neither method. Therefore, any advantages of one over the other are subjective, depending on the preferences of the user.

With Touch ID you don’t have to pick up your phone and hold it in front of your face to see the content after touching it.

Take your point, but with Face ID, you don't always need to do that. If you're standing over the phone whilst it's lying on a table etc. or if the phone's on a stand, angled toward your face for eg.

Those adjustable angled stands are fantastic for people who work at a desk most of the day with a phone that has Face ID. Just need to make sure the stand is designed with a small cutout that dips below the bottom edge of the phone, so you've got room to swipe up to unlock/return to Home Screen.

With Face ID, you you don’t have to remove your gloves during the winter time to unlock your phone or have damp fingers that will prevent from unlocking it either. The argument goes both ways. Both biometric forms the security have there indifferences.

Yeah as someone who initially hated the thought of Face ID and losing Touch ID, I'm now a believer. I don't think the accuracy is better, and even worse in many cases, but I still love it. What I would love would be to have a toggle to turn off the necessity to have to swipe the screen after Face ID recognizes me.

Sometimes while typing or working I will ask Siri to open an app while the phone is locked and the phone is charging on a dock. She'll tell me I need to unlock the phone first so I just look at the phone on the dock, it unlocks, and goes to the app you asked her to open. Seamless. This is a great way to send texts by opening Messages and dictating the message all while never touching your phone.

But I know most people are holding their phones while using and it definitely would be nice to bypass the swipe up to home screen.

I love using Siri to send texts while sitting on the lift when we go snowboarding. Face ID lets you do all of this without taking your snowboard gloves off while using dictation. Hate taking the gloves off since I live in Florida and my fingers freeze within a minute without gloves.

I use Apple Pay alot more these days these days, subconsciously or otherwise I think that may be due to a preference for Face ID over Touch ID. I do find it easier somehow.

If that was me, my butter fingers encased in thick gloves would drop that iPhone to its death every single time. You are a brave person!

People keep bringing up the glove scenario. With Face ID you still have to swipe up once the facial recognition unlocks it, which doesn’t work with some gloves. Then trying to use a touch screen with gloves is damn near impossible anyhow. Not really seeing the point. To use an iPhone, you can’t really have gloves on, whether your face or finger unlocks it.

All the reasons mentioned by the OP and gloves. Anyone in a cold climate and/or that wears gloves in the winter will tell you Touch ID is the worst. Granted you need the kind that work with touch screens but even if you had those, Touch ID doesn't work. You'd have to take your gloves off. Something not may people want to do when it's below freezing.
This. Last winter was awesome - I never had to take off my gloves to unlock my phone!

I don't have trouble with any of my gloves (North Face e-Tip, Oakley's touchscreen gloves, etc) ... I probably have 4-5 pairs but they all work fine. Not having to remove them to unlock is awesome.

To each his own. I live in Ohio where we have some cold, drawn out winters. I wear winter gloves. But I’d way rather have Touch ID 100% of the time compared to the 10% of the 4 months a year that I’m wearing gloves.

Hopefully the improvements on Face ID are legit. I want Face ID to work better.

I was working out in the yard a couple weeks back. Didn't even think to remove my gloves until after I'd successfully unlocked and swiped up. I was pleasantly surprised my work gloves worked just fine. I couldn't text with them. But they were fine for everything else. So there's a glove story for any climate.

Stylus.

Rather lose that than my glove when it's ***** 8 degrees F on a run down the hill.

If you can't hold a stylus, maybe a $1449 phone isn't a good idea.

Let's split the difference and ignore the phone until after the run

I was under the impression gloves have come a long way, to accommodate smartphone usage. I'm not in a part of the world where I need to wear gloves myself...

Not to be a smart arse...

Well, yes. Gloves for snowboarding and skiing have models that actually work with my iPhone and they have for quite a few years now. Problem is, the gloves are a little bulky and it is kind of hard for me to text with my own fingers, let alone the gloves.

I can't. Freaking 1 day lift tickets at Vail are $161. I remember $65 tix at Vail. :(

Expensive tickets...all the more reason to look away from your phone and look at the beautiful Rocky Mountain vistas...
