Fan Control for Mac Pro ( NOT MBP )

Totally forgot about this!!! Got a basic version working and then left it!

Ok, I shall upload an installer later along with the current base code that uses the cpu heatsink temp for its fan controls.

Now im going to start work on a version (2!) that will allow you to control your fans depending on what zone it is in.

However I need some help with this, so if anyone wants to give it a go then post here and I shall add you to MSN!

Been reading this whole thread and it finally gives me hope. My 2008 Mac Pro seems to have hyper sensitive fans,

My exhaust is running at about 1800 RPM and my CPU fan about 1700 RPM despite my CPUs 74F-79F (my house is about 73F), PowerSupply 129F-130F, Mem Banks in the 80s and the mem-modules all about 105F, and the Northbridge as always is about 149F

All of this really shouldn't require quite the fan load the Mac Pro is choosing to load. I can't wait for the latest fan control :)

Hi all!

I get in this thread, since it might be (hope, otherwise sorry for the OT) related to an issue I have..

Basically, on an "old" (2006) iMac Intel Core, I decided to give it a try and put a Toshiba HD, new generations one, thus throwing away the old HD (almost dead) and its bulky case.

All fine, even lighter now and plenty of room for the HD to get colder, BUT, there is a problem: since the old one was linked to a sensor, and the sensor was managing the HD Fan, now I lost its signal (since I cannot reconnect it to the new one), hence the Fan always runs at 5000 RPM! :D

I've checked, and I found that basically the temperature signal it gets the sensor is "-128° C".... ;) So my idea is that it goes in error and being in "doubt", it keeps the Fan constantly running.

I moved on, and found all "modern" appz get the correct temp value directly from the HD (around 34° C), with SMART protocol.

Now, the BIG question: I figure out I could be taking the daemon that takes care of relating temp to fan, telling him not to listen to the old signal, but instead to get SMART values and therefore the problem should be solved.

What do you think?

And, above all, how do you suggest in terms of best step to follow?

I've been running V0.7 since yesterday and really like it. Thanks.

I have a few silly questions:
1. Does "Base Speed" control intake and exhaust fans?
2. Are all of the other fans, such as Boost A & B and PCI controlled automatically?
3. How do Upper and Lower threshold settings affect fan speeds?
4. Which fans do the threshold temperatures affect? Exhaust, Intake, and Boost A/B?

I think it is worth boosting disk bay speeds. After the audio patch, for me temperatures only get high under heavy load, hence probability is that disk are working hard too. Heat is a significant factor in disk failure.
I'd like an independent fan control just for the disk bay.

1. Yes, it controls the minimum speed for intake and exhaust.
2. This version doesn't touch the PCI/PSU temps. If I can get it to work with them all then maybe soon yes.
Well I did have a older version that was based on a iMac fan control setup but all the fans were based on the CPU temp and thus would ramp up unnecessarily.

Problem is my coding is very basic and limited to C so even with this i've been learning lots and lots :p

I shall look into adding independent control but sadly I think that may have to let someone else with better knowledge than me look into it.

3. Its based on a function of the min/max fan speeds and min/max temps.

So if you have a base of 500RPM, a lower threshold of 40 and upper of 60 then once it hits 40C it'll scale up linearly to 2800 (max) @ 60C. If you get me?

It only controls Intake and Exhaust, BOOST fans are a function of the intake & exhaust speeds, its 142.5% on Quads, and maybe more on Octos due to having smaller fans!

Sadly that *is* beyond my abilities, I googled for a while on how to convert 32 to 64 bit but unless someone can give me an idea/do it for me then not at the moment!!!

I took a brief look. I have never done this before. But if you go under project> Project settings>Build tab, an option exists under architecture to select 64bit intel. However, the stock version of fan control throws an error at that point. I don't know how to fix that.

First, sorry for posting in this older Thread but i have a serious problem with my Fan behavior on my MacPro4,1 early 2009 since i downloaded FanControl.

I have set a minimum Fan Speed at 800rpm and the Lower Threshold at 50° and Upper at 80°.

But now even in absolute idle i get much to high fan speeds. Temperatures over the complete system are no where over 40° from what i can see from iStat readings. But now look at my alltime Fan speeds.

Like i said Temperatures are never over 40° C but i cant figure out how the SMC calculates such unnecessary Target Speeds. Especialy 2000rpm for the PCI fan is horrible. That thing is damn loud now.

I hope someone can help me. Fans only speed up if OSX is booting. so it seems a software issue.

SMC fan control is

a much better program.. I don't like fan control as its dull and doesn't really provide much and also its extremely inferior to istat pro or istat nano.

Hi mate, from what I remember of which fan is which from the code, it seems it's working just like it should.

However can you tell me what other applications you have running (iStat/SMZ Fan Control) and what machine you have? Quad/Octo?

Also if you can give me till early next week I can get back to my own Mac Pro and then can help better :)

Last time I checked those programs you have to manually set the fan speeds, which is completely and utterly useless for some people.

I love the way you call it inferior when actually, it really isn't! [Although it does need work to get all the zones working, but i've been busy with other things!]
 
Hi Concorde!

Thanks for your quick response. My Mac pro is the 2,66 quad. Besides of iStat (wich can only read Fan and temperatur status) i dont use any other system tweaking Programs. Only Mail, Safari and co running. I also use smcFanControl only to get reports from the smc program that is included in the app package. (thats where the codes in my previus posts came from).

I wantet to try out FanControl because the PCI fan (and only the PCI fan) startet to turn at extreme high rpm unter Windows 7 (wich i use for gaming) even if overall temperaturs of the system keep around 50°C. So i thought writing the smc settings ciould also impact the windows boot camp behavior. But from what i know now its not the same.

But right from the first time i startet FanControl (your 7.0 version), the three named fans startet to rise their default speed from around 600-800rpm (depending on fan) up to these unnessecary fast speeds i wrote about in my previous port. Since i own my Mac for about half a year now even in 100% useage while converting h264 videos over 4 hours the fan never speeded that much up and temperatues kept around 50°C-55°C with the old rpm numbers.

I think theres something screwed up with the calculations that force theres high Target Speeds rith from the first moment i see the Alle Logo on startup. The Fans keep slow if i stay in the bootcamp loader/selection menu. i Wouldnt mind the high speeds but since my Mac is right on my Desk and the fans run nealy at maximum speed the noise is pretty anoying :)

OK little Update. Solved the Problem. I completly deleted all smcFanControl files and FanControl with the removal script posted here some Pages beore. After that i turned off the MP, unplugged the power cord, waited 10 seconds, pushed and holded the power button another 10 seconds. After that i plugged the power cord back in and did a restart. And tada!: Fan Speeds are in their usual limits nice and silent!

So i hope this helps people who ever come across the same problem like me. Now i can continue to search a way to limit the PCIe fans rpm under windows7.

Have you installed fan control again? Interested in finding this bug.

Edit: Found my source code and notes, and my app was working perfectly from the code you gave.

PCI/Drive bay fan F0Ac (Actual RPM) F0Mn (Minimum allowed RPM) is way above minimum which means the SMC itself is controlling it, or an external app, such as iStat (V3 has fan control built in now) or SMC fan Control was controlling it. So I'm happy my app was working as expected :p

Also don't bother, no one has found a way to control the fans in ANY mac from Windows :(

I didn't reinstall FanControl or smcFanControl again. Over the whole Day and 3 reboots between windows and OSX the Fan keep their speed perfect. But today in the morning i turned on my Mac and the PCI fan is turning again at around 2000rpm. So i took a closer look at iStat3 and your right. There is a setting activated to controle the Fan speed (I never realised iStat has such an option). The settings are exactly set to 2000rpm so i set them down to 800 just to be sure and completly deactivated the Fan Control from iStat. One new restart didn't solve the Problem but now im at work and will check later this day.

I will also try to reinstall your APP. Just one question for my understanding. If i set the Speed to 800 and minimum Temp Threshold to 50°C, all Fans should keep around 800rpm if every temp sensor is reporting temperatures below 50°C (like it is in my System, never even get over 40°C) right?

OK that's it for now. Still wondering why i only get this fan speeds now since i own iStat3 with fan control supposedly activatet for about many month. Well i'll see later.

Yes, that is correct, however as you have a 2009 Mac Pro with turbo boost I would set it so that under heavy load the fans ramp up as the temp rises to make sure your getting the maximum boost from the CPU.

For example, my settings are:

Min Fan: 500RPM
Lower temp: 40C
Higher temp: 70C IIRC

As for iStat 3, no idea, I think it did the same for me but I disabled it straight away as its essentially useless.

Im going to be working on a improved version next week but will have to wait for that :)

I am always a fan of Fan Control. Don't like SMC fan control at all consider it cannot modify the behavior at different temperature and has an ugly icon on my menu bar...

I could make a version for you.

However I'd need you to get the sensor codes from your mac so I can change it in the app.

You could download the current version and try it to see what happens?
